Missing Person DaShad Laquinn Smith of Charlottesville

The father of a missing Charlottesville man is holding out hope that his son is alive, just days after police searched a Richmond-area landfill for clues to his disappearance. Saturday night supporters of DaShad Smith rallied behind his family.

Twenty-year-old DaShad Laquinn Smith was last seen Tuesday November 20, 2012 on the 500 block of West Main Street around 6:30 p.m. Now it has been more than a month since DaShad Smith’s disappearance, but his family is not giving up on their search to bring him home. They believe he is still alive and more attention from the community will help in their search.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Family and friends of DaShad Smith gathered at Sojourners United Church of Christ Saturday night for a praise rally to focus their attention on getting him home.

DaShad’s father Dean Smith said, “I understand they have to go to the procedures and everything, but me as a father, I feel like they are not moving fast enough.”

DaShad’s cousin Kenneth Jackson stated, “We just don’t feel like there’s been enough community involvement. There hasn’t been enough city or police involvement. I understand this is the Christmas season, but we saw no one there.”

Smith’s family says it is time for police to start taking the disappearance seriously. They say limited police resources are not looking in the right places.

Jackson stated, “The perfect example is the search of the Henrico dump last week. That’s a joke. You take 14 people down there for three days and really think you’re going to find anything.”

As for Erik McFadden – a man police call a person of interest – Smith’s family members have no doubt he was involved in the disappearance.

Jackson said, “I believe that if you find McFadden, you get the people who saw DaShad last and you start putting together all this evidence instead of just brushing it under the table – that they will actually find DaShad and get to the bottom of exactly what happened.”

DaShad Smith’s father is holding out hope his son will return home alive. “Nobody can tell me that my son ain’t here no more. Nobody. Until you call me downtown to ask me to identify a body, and that is not going to happen because my son is still here. We just got to find him,” he said.

Now, Dean says he is seeking donations to hire a private investigator to look into the case. He believes that is a necessary step to bring DaShad home.

Missing Person 2 Men Missing After Party in Maine

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine – Officials searched for two young men Sunday who disappeared last week after attending a small party at one of their houses.

Police said 21-year-old Zachary Wells and 23-year-old Prescott Wright were last seen drinking beer with a small group of friends at Wells’ house.

The two men are students at The Landing School, a boat-building and yacht design school in Arundel, Maine.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Witnesses told police the men were intoxicated, Police Chief Craig Sanford said. They weren’t in the home when another resident went downstairs to turn off a radio at 4 a.m. Thursday, and they didn’t show up for classes Thursday or Friday.

Sanford said nothing indicates foul play, and added that the disappearance is one of the strangest cases he’s seen.

Searches of ocean waters, roadsides and marshy areas have failed to turn up any clues, the chief said. The search continued Sunday with a Warden Service airplane searching from the air and the Maine Marine Patrol and members of Well’s and Wright’s families searching on the ground.

“There’s no one area to pinpoint because we don’t know where they might have gone,” he said.

Arson Investigation New York Man Set Fire and Shot Firefighters, Killing 2

WEBSTER, N.Y. — A gunman ambushed four volunteer firefighters responding to an intense pre-dawn house fire Monday morning outside Rochester, N.Y., killing two before ending up dead himself, authorities said. Police used an armored vehicle to evacuate more than 30 nearby residents.

The gunman fired at the firefighters when they arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m. at the blaze near the Lake Ontario shore in Webster, town Police Chief Gerald Pickering said. The first Webster police officer who arrived chased the suspect and exchanged gunfire with him, authorities said.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

“It does appear it was a trap” for the first responders to the fire, Pickering said at a news conference.

Authorities didn’t say how the gunman died or whether anyone might have died in the fire itself.

One of the dead firefighters was also a town police lieutenant; it wasn’t clear whether he returned fire. An off-duty police officer who was driving by was injured by shrapnel, Pickering said.

The fire started in one home and spread to two others and a car, officials said. The gunfire initially kept firefighters from battling the blazes. Police say four homes were destroyed and four damaged.

The West Webster Fire District learned of the fire early Monday after a report of a car and house on fire on Lake Road, on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario, Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn said.

The fire appeared from a distance

as a pulsating ball of flame glowing against the early morning sky, flames licking into treetops and reflecting on the water, with huge bursts of smoke billowing away in a brisk wind.

Two of the firefighters arrived on a fire engine and two in their own vehicles, Pickering said. After the gunman fired, one of the wounded men managed to flee, but the other three couldn’t because of flying gunfire.

A police armored vehicle was used to recover two of the men, and eventually it evacuated 33 people from nearby homes, the police chief said.

The dead men were identified as Police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, the Webster Police Department’s public information officer; and Tomasz Kaczowka, also a 911 dispatcher, whose age was not released.

Pickering described Chiapperini as a “lifetime firefighter” with nearly 20 years with the department, and called Kaczowka a “tremendous young man.”

The two wounded firefighters, Joseph Hofsetter and Theodore Scardino, were in guarded condition in the intensive care unit at Strong Memorial Hospital, authorities said. Both were awake and alert and are expected to recover.

Hofsetter, also a full-timer with the Rochester Fire Department, was hit once in the pelvis, and the bullet lodged in his spine, authorities said. Scardino was hit in the chest and knee.

Monday’s shooting and fires were in a neighborhood of seasonal and year-round homes set close together across the road from the lakeshore. The area is popular with recreational boaters but is normally quiet this time of year.

“We have very few calls for service in that location,” Pickering said. “Webster is a tremendous community. We are a safe community, and to have a tragedy befall us like this is just horrendous.”

O’Flynn lamented the violence, which comes on the heels of other shootings including the massacre of 20 students and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

“It’s sad to see that that this is becoming more commonplace in communities across the nation,” O’Flynn said.

Webster, a middle-class suburb, now is the scene of violence linked to house fires for two Decembers in a row.

Last Dec. 7, authorities say, a 15-year-old boy doused his home with gasoline and set it ablaze, killing his father and two brothers, 16 and 12. His mother and 13-year-old sister escaped with injuries. He is being prosecuted as an adult.

Missing Person Hailey Dunn of Colorado City, 2 Years Next Week

COLORADO CITY – Family and friends gathered in Colorado City Saturday for a prayer vigil to honor missing teen Hailey Dunn. Next week marks two years since the teen was last seen, just a few days after Christmas.

As they decorate a Christmas tree with lights and orange ribbons, they are momentums of hope for heavy hearts.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“The vigil we have in December that marks her anniversary the day she went missing and Christmas, it’s just really tough on everybody. December is always a bad month,” Billie Dunn.

She’s talking about her daughter, Hailey Dunn, who went missing two years ago. A vigil was held Saturday at Ruddick Park in Colorado City to honor the teen.

“Yesterday was really hard on me, coming up here for another vigil,” Dunn said.

Having one vigil after another is taking a toll on this mother.

“I’m ready for Hailey to be home. Each time we think she’ll be home for the next vigil, make it a celebration party,” Dunn said.

Dunn hopes that thought will soon become a reality as the FBI is re-interviewing people who may lead them to crack the case.

“The FBI themselves are actually conducting interviews, I think that’s going to be a good start,” Dunn said.

As she awaits for that light of hope to shine through her darkness, she holds on to her son and those close to her to keep her going. Searching for answers and searching for leads.

“I’ve got good friends and family,” Dunn said.

If you spot Hailey Dunn, you are asked to call the Colorado City Police Department at 325-728-5294 or the FBI anonymous hotline at 1-800-THE-LOST.

Background Checks Surging in Colorado

In one week, more than 8,800 firearm background checks have been submitted to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

As of Sunday morning, approximately 10,000 background checks were in the CBI queue, waiting to be processed, said Susan Medina, spokeswoman for CBI.

“These are unprecedented numbers,” she said.

http://liarcatchers.com/background_checks.html

Around 3,000 checks are being submitted a day, Medina said.

The wait time for a background check was at 68 hours Saturday.

This process, required to purchase a gun, usually takes minutes.

On Dec. 15, there were 573 background checks for firearm purchases in the CBI queue, Medina said. Wait times were just over 15 minutes.

The flood of submittals has prompted that department to expand hours of operation from 6 a.m. to midnight, Medina said.

“The goal everyday is to get it down to a zero balance,” she said. “They processed 1,600 Saturday.”

The background checks began pouring in Dec. 15, one day after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Connecticut and on the heels of politicians calling for bans on certain weapons and extended gun magazines.

The bureau is only closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas, otherwise staff, including those from other departments, will be working to process as many checks as possible, Medina said.

In 2012, through November, there were 34,117 more background checks submitted to CBI for processing than in all of 2011, according to CBI data.

Accident Reconstruction 2 Bodies Found in River Near Crash

A pickup truck was driven into the Kentucky River overnight in Clark County, killing two people.

Authorities found the bodies of the victims Sunday afternoon. The Clark County coroner says the victims are Carroll and Henrietta Dobbs of Clark County.

“Yeah it’s going to take a while to get the vehicle out of the water. Just simply where it’s at and the vegetation, trees and everything around it’s going to take at least two wreckers and take a while to get it out,” says Berl Perdue, the Clark County Sheriff.

http://liarcatchers.com/accident_reconstruction.html

Deputies were notified just after noon on Sunday. The truck appears to have been driven off of Four Mile Road just outside the small town of Ford. Two bodies, both adults, were found just outside the half-submerged vehicle.

“It looks like both occupants of the truck had exited the vehicle after the accident and they may have succumbed to hypothermia or whatever in the water,” says Sheriff Perdue.

The Sheriff’s Department says the crash likely happened while it was still dark out. They say the driver drove up one embankment accidentally, then over-corrected and ended up going down the steep embankment right into the Kentucky River.

“There’s no good day but this time of year is even worse on families,” says Sheriff Perdue. “You’ve got the holidays, Christmas coming up, so it’s got to be devastating for them.”

Missing Person Search Continue for Dylan Redwine

One month after Dylan Redwine vanished from his father’s home at Vallecito Lake, a full contingent of investigators is still working the case and his family is still begging for his return, or for someone to tell them what happened to the 13-year-old.

“Someone’s got him, and they can’t keep him out of sight forever,” said his aunt Lia Howard of Denver. “We just hope we can find what speaks to that person.”

So far, a reward of $11,000 hasn’t leveraged any solid leads. Tips are still coming in from across the country, but nothing has moved investigators closer to the missing teen. Items collected during a community roadside search 10 days ago haven’t been definitively linked to Redwine.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

The lack of any visible progress on the case has cast a pall over the tiny community of Vallecito at a time when it is usually celebrating the holidays and snow.

The horse-drawn sleighs, ice sculptors, dogsleds and cookie bakers were out last weekend for the annual Christmas festival, but Jim Schank, who owns the Schank House Bar & Grill at Vallecito, said it just wasn’t the same this year.

“Overall, this community is still lost until Dylan is found,” Schank said.

He said Dylan’s dejected-appearing father Mark Redwine occasionally comes in to buy cigarettes.

“He’s lost a lot of weight,” Schank said.

Dylan’s mother Elaine Redwine finally had to return to her home in Monument Sunday night after spending a month in the Durango area holding out

hope that her son would be found.

“It was just heartbreaking for her to leave,” Howard said.

Dylan disappeared Nov. 19, the morning after he flew in to spend Thanksgiving break with his father. Dylan and his mother had moved to the Colorado Springs area in July where she had primary custody of her son after a long and bitter divorce battle.

Investigators are chasing every tip and clue but have no suspect.
