Insurance Fraud Sumter Man Sentenced in Hand Amputation Case

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – The 58-year-old ringleader of an insurance scheme that involved cutting off the hand of a mentally disabled man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Federal prosecutors say David Player controlled the man’s affairs and gave him a small amount of money to have his hand cut off in May 2008. Player then used the $670,000 in insurance money on himself.

Also sentenced on Friday was 34-year-old Gerald Hardin, who was ordered to spend three years and five months in prison for taking $5,000 to help with the scheme.

Authorities say the men tied the victim’s arm to a tree branch and cut it off with a pole saw. Doctors were not able to reattach the hand.

Insurance Fraud Woman Caught On Video Performing Sex Act in Park

San Mateo, CA — A sex act in a public park led to a high school janitor being sentenced to to nine months in jail for workers compensation fraud.

After numerous office visits over a three-month period, doctors became suspicious that the janitor — who was on crutches and claimed she was unable to walk or work because of an on-the-job ankle injury — might have have been exaggerating. They alerted authorities. Permission was granted for surveillance video by insurance fraud investigators.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

The video contained some interesting footage of the claimant, Modupe Adunni Martin, 29, according to the San Jose Mercury News:

“Doctors later viewed the video footage, which shows Martin walking with crutches into the doctor’s office, and then ditching them shortly thereafter, [San Mateo County District Attorney Steve] Wagstaffe said. After the visit, Martin walked to a public park without the crutches and ran a short distance in her high-heeled shoes, before kneeling and performing oral sex on her boyfriend.”

Doctors concluded that an injured ankle wouldn’t permit that kind of activity. She was subsequently arrested and charge with multiple counts of insurance fraud.

Martin later pleaded no contest to felony workers compensation fraud and was sentenced on Thursday in San Mateo County Superior Court,. In addition to the jail term, she will have to reimburse the state for about $80,000 in workers compensation payments and serve three years probation.

According to Opposing Views, “[i]mmediately after the sentencing in San Mateo County Superior Court, the 29-year-old woman was handcuffed and taken into custody. Her attorney Emily Andrews said Martin was ‘very remorseful and recognizes the gravity of her deception.’ ”

MINERAL COUNTY – The Mineral County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the communities help in the search for 21-year-old missing person Dustin Goebel.

Goebel was last seen in the Superior area on Nov. 24 and Mineral County Sheriff Ernie Ornelas encouraged anyone who may have seen or heard from him since then to contact the Sheriff’s Office.

“The family is very concerned,” Sheriff Ornelas said. “We haven’t received any substantial information and because of his health issues and the change in weather it has become a major concern.”

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Sheriff Ornelas added that if anyone in the community has seen Goebel since Nov. 24 it will give the Sheriff’s Office a better idea of where to start looking for him.

“We received possible information that he went to Corpus Christi (Texas),” Sheriff Ornelas said. “But we checked with Greyhound and they have nothing in their database showing a ticket was purchased using his name.”

Sheriff Ornelas added that authorities and Goebel’s family residing in Corpus Christi have been notified to be on the lookout for the missing male.

According to information provided by the Sheriff’s Office, Goebel is a white 5’10” male weighing approximately 150 pounds with light brown hair and green eyes.

Goebel has been placed on a missing persons directory and Sheriff Ornelas said that if he is found or stopped by authorities a search of his name will identify him as missing.

Wrongful Death Gunman Kills 26 in Connecticut School Shooting

A man opened fire Friday inside the Connecticut elementary school where his mother worked as a teacher, killing 26 people, including 20 children, as youngsters cowered in their classrooms and trembled helplessly to the sound of gunfire reverberating through the building.

The killer, armed with two handguns, committed suicide and another person was found dead at a second scene, bringing the toll to 28, authorities said.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

The attack, coming less than two weeks before Christmas, was the nation’s second-deadliest school shooting, exceeded only by the Virginia Tech massacre that left 33 people dead in 2007.

Panicked parents raced to Sandy Hook Elementary School, about 60 miles northeast of New York City, looking for their children. Students were told to close their eyes by police as they were led from the building.

Schoolchildren — some crying, others looking frightened — were escorted through a parking lot in a line, hands on each other’s shoulders.

“Our hearts are broken today,” a tearful President Barack Obama, struggling to maintain composure, said at the White House. He called for “meaningful action” to prevent such shootings.

Youngsters and their parents described teachers locking doors and ordering the children to huddle in the corner or hide in closets when shots echoed through the building.

A law enforcement official identified the gunman as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, the son of a teacher. A second law enforcement official said his mother, Nancy Lanza, was presumed dead.

Adam Lanza’s older brother, 24-year-old Ryan, of Hoboken, N.J., was being questioned, the first official said. Earlier, a law enforcement official mistakenly identified Ryan as the shooter.

Both officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record about the unfolding investigation.

The gunman drove to the school in his mother’s car, the second official said. Three guns were found — a Glock and a Sig Sauer, both pistols, inside the school, and a .223-caliber rifle in the back of a car.

Lanza’s girlfriend and another friend were missing in New Jersey, the official also said.

Robert Licata said his 6-year-old son was in class when the gunman burst in and shot the teacher.

“That’s when my son grabbed a bunch of his friends and ran out the door,” he said. “He was very brave. He waited for his friends.”

He said the shooter didn’t utter a word.

Stephen Delgiadice said his 8-year-old daughter was in the school and heard two big bangs. Teachers told her to get in a corner, he said.

“It’s alarming, especially in Newtown, Connecticut, which we always thought was the safest place in America,” he said. His daughter was fine.

Mergim Bajraliu, 17, heard the gunshots echo from his home and ran to check on his 9-year-old sister at the school. He said his sister, who was fine, heard a scream come over the intercom at one point. He said teachers were shaking and crying as they came out of the building.

“Everyone was just traumatized,” he said.

Mary Pendergast, who lives close to the school, said her 9-year-old nephew was in the school at the time of the shooting, but wasn’t hurt after his music teacher helped him take cover in a closet.

Richard Wilford’s 7-year-old son, Richie, is in the second grade at the school. His son told him that he heard a noise that “sounded like what he described as cans falling.”

The boy told him a teacher went out to check on the noise, came back in, locked the door and had the kids huddle up in the corner until police arrived.

“There’s no words,” Wilford said. “It’s sheer terror, a sense of imminent danger, to get to your child and be there to protect him.”

Obama’s comments on the tragedy amounted to one of the most outwardly emotional moments of his presidency.

“The majority of those who died were children — beautiful, little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old,” Obama said.

He paused for several seconds to keep his composure as he teared up and wiped an eye. Nearby, two aides cried and held hands as they listened to Obama.

“They had their entire lives ahead of them — birthdays, graduations, wedding, kids of their own,” Obama continued about the victims. “Among the fallen were also teachers, men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children.”

Missing Person Longview Man Had Reported Robbery

Days before a Longview man was reported missing, he told police he was robbed and his wallet taken.

Ronnie Joe Gammage, 27, was reported missing by his mother Saturday after he didn’t answer her phone calls for four days.

Police confirmed Thursday that Gammage filed a police report Nov. 29 detailing an incident outside a convenience store in the 1900 block of Judson Road.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

In the report, Gammage told officers three people came up to him and said, “Give me your stuff,” according to police spokeswoman Kristie Brian.

“They got his property,” Brian said.

“There are three alleged (mugging) suspects. The suspects are unknown,” she said. “He said they just threatened him, so it would be a robbery.”

On Saturday, police located Gammage’s abandoned pickup — with a tire slashed — behind the Waffle House on Loop 281.

There is no sign of Gammage, who is disabled, officials and family said.

Brian said she did not see anything in the files of the Nov. 29 report and the Dec. 8 missing person report that linked the two incidents and declined to comment if police investigators are examining the report in connection to Gammage’s disappearance.

No person has been arrested or charged in connection with the robbery report that Gammage filed, Brian said.

However, Gammage’s mother, Frankie, who is offering $5,000 for information that leads to finding her son, said she believes the robbery is linked to his disappearance.

“He was mugged on Nov. 28 at a service station — right there from the apartments where he lived,” Frankie Gammage said. “He was on mental disability — and (he has) muscular dystrophy — he couldn’t run, he doesn’t know how to fight or protect himself. He didn’t have good judgement of people.”

Frankie Gammage said she can’t imagine why her son would vanish unless it was connected to the incident.

“Nobody that I knew would have wanted to hurt him… Everybody said how nice he was,” Gammage said.

Ron Gammage lives alone in Parkway Gardens apartments and is able to function in spite of his mental disability but is not employed, his mother said.

The towering 6-foot, 8-inch tall man, who is known for dressing in western attire, had a few places he frequented on a regular basis, including the Waffle House where his truck was found, Frankie Gammage said.

“It would have been easy for someone to follow him and see his pattern — where he went,” she said, adding that he ate at Waffle House at least four times a week.

“We have done the initial investigation. We dusted the truck for fingerprints and searched the surrounding area and woods. At this point we are putting it out there to the public and hoping someone has seen him,” Brian said.

Frankie Gammage said since realizing her son was missing, she has not left the telephone.

“I am hoping he is alive. My feelings are that he is not,” she said.

Police ask anyone with information on Ron Gammage’s whereabouts to call Detective David Cheatham at (903) 237-1147.

Pedophile Tracking Burke, VA Man Sentenced to 360 Months for Child Porn

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Jason Laposay, 40, of Burke, Virginia, was sentenced to 360 months in prison, followed by 15 years of supervised release, for producing child pornography by filming someone under the age of 12 engaging in sexually explicit activity.

Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; Debra Evans Smith, Acting Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office; and Lt. Colonel James A. Morris, Acting Fairfax County Chief of Police, made the announcement after sentencing by United States District Judge Liam O’Grady.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Laposay pled guilty on June 29, 2012, to producing child pornography. According to court records, Laposay was identified after an individual contacted the Fairfax County Child Abuse hotline claiming that Laposay was sexually abusing a minor. A forensic interview of the minor victim by Fairfax County Child Protective Services found that for more than two years, Laposay sexually abused the minor victim once a week. He also used a sexual toy on the minor victim and showed her images of child pornography.

Fairfax County police executed a search warrant on Laposay’s residence on January 25, 2012, and recovered six video files produced by Laposay using an iPhone that depicted the minor victim engaging in sexual activity with him. Law enforcement also recovered more than 3,000 images of child pornography from Laposay’s residence.

The investigation was conducted by the Fairfax County Police Department and FBI Washington Field Office’s Child Exploitation Task Force. Special Assistant United States Attorney Maureen C. Cain is prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children and to identify and rescue victims.
