Cold Case DNA Helps Bring Charges in 20 Yr Old Jackson County, MO Rape Case

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Prosecutors say that DNA technology has led to charges in a 20-year-old Jackson County rape case – even though the main witness in the case has since died.

Keith Harris, 48, has been charged with two counts of rape in connection to the 1992 case, which began at a Kansas City, Kansas bar. Two teenagers told police that a man took them in his tractor-trailer at a bar, and were then taken to a vacant lot in a Kansas City, Missouri, industrial area where they were raped at knifepoint.

http://liarcatchers.com/cold_cases.html

“One of the girls got away and actually ran to my neighbors house, Byron Curtis, who actually helped her,” said Johannah DeSchepper, a woman who grew up near the crime scene. DeSchepper said the man who helped contact police in the early morning hours of April 1992 has since died.

“She picked the right house because he was retired and he was always willing to help anyone who would be in need,” said DeSchepper.

But thanks to DNA technology, prosecutors say that this case is now very much alive.

“I think both of these women do feel a sense of relief that this day has finally come for them,” said Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters-Baker. “We did not have the COTIS databank that we have today. So, you know today its a much broader system. Its easier to get a match then it was certainly in the early 90′.”

Authorities say that they were able to match Harris to the 1992 rapes because his DNA was already in a national database because of a 1995 rape conviction in New York.

Brian appeared with the TAPS group on “Ghost Hunters” and “Ghost Hunters International.” He was often blamed for lost equipment and he mostly known for an incident where he yelled, “Dude, run!” when he and the cameraman saw what they believed to be an apparition. Brian later stated that it was actually the cameraman that said the words and not him.

Brian, who lives in Warwich, RI left the show a few yeas back and and has been appearing on local Rhode Island PBS show called “Haunted RI.”

Chip Coffey, a well-known psychic tweeted on Sunday that Brian was missing, and Jason Hawes, founder of TAPS, posted on his Facebook page around midnight on December 9, the following:

“To all, I have heard about Brian and my hope is he will be found safe. I was able to talk with him for a while about a month or so back and he seemed in a good place at that time. I hope he finds that good place again.”

In the lengthy note that Brian left on his Facebook page he wrote, “I wanted to write this note to say goodbye to a certain few that need to know what happened to me.”

Brian outlines mistakes he has made in his life and states he could never get his “crap together” and how his children deserve better. He stated he is in a “deep depression and know I will not come out of it.”

The love for his two children is evident and towards the end of the note he asks “if someone could pass this on to her (his wife) it would be great.”

He ends with, “Goodbye my love and goodbye my 2 darling babies. I will miss all 3 of you!!”

Friends and fans continue to support Brian with well wishes.

Drug Dog Sweep Baker City, OR Man Arrested

Baker City Police, with the help of the department’s drug-detecting dog, Turbo, arrested a Haines man Sunday night on multiple drug charges.

Baker City Police Chief Wyn Lohner said officers arrested Kenneth Grant Taylor III, 29, on charges of possessing hydrocodone, methamphetamine and another prescription drug. Taylor also was cited on a charge of possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. He is being held at the Baker County Jail.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

Lohner said officer Gerrit Southard initially pulled Taylor over at about 10:30 Sunday night at Campbell and Cedar streets after the officer noticed that the right brake light was out on the 2004 Ford F-150 pickup truck Taylor was driving.

While Southard was in the process of issuing Taylor a warning for the defective equipment issue, Officer Rand Weaver and his partner, Turbo, arrived.

“Weaver ran Turbo around the vehicle and the search revealed illegal narcotics,” Lohner said.

The drugs were found in various locations inside the pickup truck, Lohner said.

“We’ll be conducting follow-up on the case,” he added.

Identity Theft Queens Woman Faces Charges

A Queens woman faces numerous identity theft and forgery charges after Darien and Stamford police connected her to a string of fraudulent ATM withdrawals at area HSBC banks in early September.

Chevon Waynes, 29, of Long Island City, was held in lieu of posting a $25,000 bond after being arrested via warrant on Monday, Dec. 3, after turning herself in to police. Officers said Waynes was one of two people who drove a woman to two HSBC banks to get cash from the ATMs. At a Stamford branch, police said Waynes’ accomplice, Stephany Jeffry, successfully withdrew $2,800 from the bank, then was driven by Waynes and at least one other person to the Darien branch where they tried to take another $3,000.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

The account had been flagged by the Stamford withdrawal, and Darien bank employees alerted police. When questioned, Jeffry, 20, gave police a fake California driver’s license that indicated her name was Jennifer Williams, police said.

She claimed that she lived in California and was visiting her sister in New York. She also said that her sister had dropped her off at the bank and was parked in the nearby Darien Diner lot in a black Nissan with New York plates. Police searched the area but could not find the car in question.

Although the driver’s license was fake, its information was legit, police said, indicating a person named Jennifer Williams who lives in Las Vegas, Nev. Jeffry later acknowledged her true identity, police said.

Police also found a slip of paper with two account numbers and the corresponding account balances. Bank personnel confirmed it was the same account flagged at the Stamford branch.

Jeffry admitted to having perpetrated that crime, police said. She said she had been driven to Darien from New York by a male and female. She identified the male by the street name Rugg, who she said provided her with the fake ID and the slip of paper with the account information. Jeffry told police she was to be paid for withdrawing the money, but claimed not to know the specific amount she was to receive. Rugg has yet to be identified.

Waynes was identified as being one of the two people who drove Jeffry to the HSBC banks, with the arrangement to pick her up after the fraudulent transactions were completed, police said. Waynes faces six felony counts: third-degree criminal attempt to larceny, third-degree conspiracy to larceny, two counts of second-degree forgery, two counts of conspiracy to commit identity theft and interfering with an officer.

Waynes’ next court date was scheduled for Friday, Dec. 14, and Jeffry has court on Monday, Dec. 17.

Wrongful Death Lexington Murder Suspect Turns Himself In

The man wanted for the murder of a Lexington man earlier this month turned himself in to police after arriving at LEX 18’s studios Monday morning.

Brandon Lamont Bailey, 28, was wanted for the shooting death of Anthony Logan, 22, who was killed December 1 in front of the apartment of Logan’s sister on Cambridge Drive. Police say Bailey shot Logan after the two were involved in a fight. A warrant was issued for Bailey the following day.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Bailey arrived at LEX 18’s studios at about 10 a.m. Monday, saying he wanted to turn himself in. Police were called and arrived shortly after. Bailey said he had a bus ticket to Louisiana and he planned to hide out with family there, but that family members convinced him to turn himself in because he claims he shot Logan in self-defense.

Fraud Investigation Miami Rabbi Arrested for Faking Luggage Theft

Miami, FL — A rabbi was arrested and is facing dozens of charges in South Florida after authorities say he bilked companies out of tens of thousands of dollars in false insurance claims.

Barry William Kallenberg, 60, was arrested at Miami International Airport Tuesday on one count of organized scheme to defraud and 73 counts each of grand theft, false insurance claims and false supporting insurance documents, according to a Miami-Dade Police arrest affidavit.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Kallenberg, who lives in Sunny Isles Beach and Alpine, N.J., is accused of submitting false insurance claims to American Express and Allianz Global Assistance.

According to the affidavit, Kallenberg flew into and out of MIA on numerous occasions where he made declarations his luggage didn’t arrive on time.

Surveillance video caught Kallenberg picking up his luggage and later returning to the airport to report that the luggage never arrived, the affidavit said.

The declarations allowed Kallenberg to take advantage of the insurance that allowed him to make purchases of $500 per person, per incident, which he used to purchase merchandise he later returned, the affidavit said.

Pair Crash Stolen Car Into Pompano Beach House

Kallenberg would keep the proceeds from the returned merchandise, and made multiple claims on multiple occasions, the affidavit said.

The fraudulent claims accounted for $30,324.62 in Miami-Dade, the affidavit said. Other claims were also made but aren’t added to that amount because they happened outside the county or the victims couldn’t provide documentation.

Kallenberg appeared in bond court Tuesday, where he told a judge most of his rabbi duties involve weddings, funerals and unveilings. The judge ordered him to surrender his passport and set bond at $110,000. Jail records showed Kallenberg remained behind bars Wednesday morning.
