Accident Reconstrution Neighbors Help Save Man From Burning Car

A fiery crash left a driver trapped in his car. It happened this afternoon on Montavesta Road, just off Tates Creek. If it wasn’t for people living nearby, and officers first on the scene, the man behind the wheel may not have survived.

Looking at the torched shell of this car, you wouldn’t think the driver made it out alive. But look closer, at the driver’s seat, and you’ll see it’s unscathed. That may be thanks to a handful of quick thinking neighbors and police officers.

“Shortly after we looked in the car and tried to get the door open, it started to catch on fire,” says Barrett Christensen.

Christensen heard the crash from his house, less than 50 feet from the road. He and his dad ran to the driver’s window, where they found a man trapped, his door jammed.

“We just started calling for fire extinguishers just to try and keep the flames down. It looked like the gas was dripping down to the leaves. So every time we put it out, it would start right back up,” Christensen says.

Police say the 53 year old driver slammed into two parked SUVs, and some kind of medical condition caused him to lose control. Christensen says he and his neighbors used about 15 fire extinguishers to fight the fire. An officer even grabbed Christensen’s garden hose to keep the driver cool.

“At one time we had two to three people spraying the car from all different sides. We were able to keep it from engulfing the car,” he says.

“They actually saved his life. He was trapped. There was no way the officers could have gotten him out of the vehicle,” says Lt. Chad Bacon with the Lexington Police Department.

Firefighters arrived and used the jaws of life to cut open the side of the car. The driver went to the hospital with smoke inhalation, but no burns, thanks to some heroes on Montavesta Road.

Three other people who helped fight the fire went to the hospital with smoke inhalation. No word on how the driver is doing.

Private Detective 2 Presidents of Lexington Supermarkets Smuggle Unapproved Prescription Drugs

LEXINGTON—The presidents of two supermarkets in Lexington admitted they conspired to smuggle unapproved prescription drugs into their stores to sell them.

Juan Cervantes, 42, and Manuel Hernandez, 48, pleaded guilty Tuesday to money laundering and conspiracy to smuggle goods. The corporations and their stores listed as Cervantes Discoteca Inc., dba Super Mercado Aguascalientes #2, located on New Circle Road and AG Super Mercado, dba Aguascalientes, located on Alexandria Drive pleaded guilty to the same charges.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

The corporations and the store presidents agreed to forfeit $650,000 combined, and the corporations together will pay a total of approximately $100,000 in fines.

According to court documents, from 2006 until March 2011, the two stores made a total of approximately $377,000 in cash selling the unapproved drugs.

The drugs were smuggled into California from Mexico and shipped to a Chicago company. Two co-defendants transported the drugs from Chicago to the Super Mercado stores in Lexington. Hernandez and Cervantes wrote checks to the company for the drugs.

During a four-year investigation, authorities found that that the drugs were not sold by a licensed medical professional, did not contain English instructions for consumption, were never approved for importation into the U.S., and that the stores did not have a Kentucky license to sell prescription drugs.

Kerry B. Harvey, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Antoinette V. Henry, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Office of Criminal Investigations, Metro Washington Field Office; Ronnie Bastin, Chief of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Division of Police; Christopher A. Henry, Special Agent in Charge, Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division; and Perrye Turner, Special Agent in Charge, of the Federal Bureau Investigation jointly announced the plea.

The investigation was conducted by Lexington Police, FDA, FBI, and the IRS. The U.S. Attorney’s Office was represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Roger West.

Sentencing for the defendants is scheduled for March 2013. Cervantes and Hernandez face a maximum of 20 years in prison. The court must consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the federal statutes before imposing a sentence.

Missing Person More Info on Dylan Redwine

LA PLATA COUNTY, Colo. — Investigators looking for 13-year-old Dylan Redwine turned their attention back to Vallecito Reservoir in southwestern Colorado Tuesday. They also released new photos of the missing teenager.

The boy disappeared from his father’s house on November 19. He was visiting for Thanksgiving.

Crews went into the water with three boats equipped with sonar.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“We have no new tips that have sent us back to the lake, but we’re checking in case changes in water and lake conditions could have resulted in any changes from last week,” said Dan Bender, Public Information Officer for the Dylan Redwine Task Force. “Those searches have not found anything at this time, but are continuing throughout the day today.”

Based on video footage from the Durango-La Plata County Airport of Dylan arriving in Durango on Sunday, November 18, and a visit on Sunday to the Durango Walmart, investigators determined that Dylan was wearing the following:

A blue baseball cap with a white front panel with the words “Duke Blue Devils” in blue on the white panel;
A black, short-sleeved T-shirt with the large letters “DC” (possibly in grey) on the front within a thin light-colored square border around the DC logo;
A pair of black basketball shorts that went below the knee with light-colored (possibly light blue and white) stripes on the sides; and
Black-colored “Jordan” shoes with a white tongue and white shoelace area.

Citizens who have information that may aid in the search for Dylan are asked to leave a voicemail message on the Dylan Redwine Tip Line at 970-382-7511.

Missing Person Kathy Haley of Newport News, VA

NEWPORT NEWS — “I’m not one that worries. I’m not a worrywart, but here, lately, I have been, and that’s not a comfortable feeling,” said Karen Bell.

Bell and her fiance, Reginald Fletcher, live in the apartment complex where Kathy Haley used to live. Months ago, Haley and her Boxer, Molly, seemed to disappear. The last time anyone in her family spoke to the 37-year-old was September 1.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“Some of the regular residents even passing by, you still see a sigh that’s, like, a looking-over-your-shoulder type thing,” Fletcher explained.

When Haley’s mother couldn’t get in touch with her, she went to Haley’s apartment from which she said things were missing and where she found “destruction” inside it. Neighbors told 13News they saw police pull a mattress out of a dumpster at the apartments and that the mattress seemed to have blood on it.

“The longer the time goes by, the chances of locating her decrease,” said Master Detective W. B. Gordon. He and other detectives with Newport News Police Department received several tips through Crime Line, but none have panned out once checked. Gordon continues to look into other tips.

“We’ve got the stuff we sent to the lab, and we’re waiting for results from that to return,” Gordon offered. “Once that returns, hopefully, that’ll open up some things.”

Gordon said the department has been able to find out where Haley was working. When her family reported her missing, they knew only that she was working in Portsmouth.

“Obviously, the environment she worked at, dancing, there’s some hesitation on those people that work in that environment in wanting to talk to the police, but I would greatly appreciate if any of them would reach out and contact us,” Gordon said.

Police still are working to find the person depicted in a composite sketch they released in September. That person, who is not considered a suspect, is someone who may have been around Haley’s home at about the time she and her dog went missing. Detectives think he could have information that would help them figure out what happened to Haley and Molly and if somebody is responsible for their disappearances.

“You know, you don’t know if it was someone that she knew, if she was being stalked, if it was random,” Bell said. “We definitely like to get some word, you know, as to whether or not this creep has been caught, you know, not just for our sake, but, you know…for her family.”

Fraud Investigation Pain Clinic Owner Pleads Guilty to Money Laundering

COVINGTON, KY—A man who owned two pain clinics in Florida and Ohio admitted he laundered money he received from his clinics that illegally dispensed prescription drugs to eastern Kentuckians.

Jody L. Robinson, 38, from Portsmouth, Ohio, pleaded guilty late Thursday afternoon to conspiracy to launder money in federal court in Covington. A co-defendant, William Muldoon, 34, of Margate, Florida, also pleaded guilty to a money laundering conspiracy charge. Robinson hired Muldoon to advertise the clinics.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Robinson acknowledged that from July 2008 until September 2009, he made more than $400,000 using a doctor to unlawfully write prescriptions to patients from Lawrence, Boyd, and Greenup Counties in Kentucky. Patients from West Virginia, Ohio, and Tennessee also obtained prescriptions from the clinics. The patients paid between $150 and $160 in cash for a prescription that consisted mostly of oxycodone. The prescriptions were typically filled for $300 at the clinics’ in-house pharmacies.

According to his plea agreement, Robinson opened a pain clinic in Ohio because it was more convenient for patients and because of the pressure he felt from Florida media reports on rogue pain clinics that service out-of-state patients.

Robinson, who previously worked in the automotive industry, admitted that he opened a pain clinic known as Florida Global Medical in July 2008 because he had heard about the profit potential.

Muldoon admitted he was paid at least $30,000 to build a website for the Florida clinic, develop medical software, and create flyers to advertise the clinics’ services.

Kerry B. Harvey, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; Perrye Turner, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation; and Rodney Brewer, Kentucky State Police Commissioner, jointly announced the guilty pleas.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI and KSP. Assistant U.S. Attorney Roger West represented the U.S. Attorney’s Office in this case.

Robinson and Muldoon will appear for sentencing on March 11, 2013. Each defendant faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine. However, the court must consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the federal statutes before imposing a sentence.
