Wrongful Death Double Murder Suicide in Casper, WY

CASPER – Casper College and city officials say a suspect used a “sharp-edged weapon” to kill two people in Casper, one a college faculty member, in two separate attacks, including one in a Casper College classroom.

The suspect, who wasn’t a student, then committed suicide with an edged weapon in the same classroom where the suspect killed one of the victims, said Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Walsh wouldn’t identify the dead pending notification of next of kin.

It appears there was some relationship between the three dead although he said there’s no confirmation of a blood relationship and a motive for the attacks wasn’t clear, Walsh said. The attacks don’t appear to be “school-motivated,” according to a press release from city officials.

No suspects are at large and nobody else was injured in the attacks, Walsh said earlier Friday.

Asked about reports from students that a bow and arrow were used in the attacks and suicide, Walsh said an “edged weapon” was used but wouldn’t specifically identify what weapons were involved in the attacks. No firearms were used, he said.

Police have blocked off the 3700-3800 block of Hawthorne Avenue in Casper. Late morning radio scanner traffic and on-scene reports indicated a dead body was on the street, located approximately in the middle of the block. A county coroner transport vehicle and a hazardous materials team arrived at the scene at about 1 p.m.

A resident on the block told a Star-Tribune reporter she noticed the body was barefoot and clad in pajamas.

Police first responded to the campus’s Wold Physical Science Center at about 9 a.m. Friday morning. Police and college officials locked down the campus and police sealed and searched the physical science center.

The college is now no longer on lockdown, but police are barring anyone from entering the physical science center or the adjoining life science center until their investigation has concluded.

Officials called for ambulances from the Wyoming Medical Center shortly after 9 a.m., but no patients were transported or treated at the Wyoming Medical Center, Walsh and hospital spokeswoman Mel Schwartz said.

College student Delina Barbosa was in the same building and same floor where the incident occurred Friday morning, attending a morning chemistry class. At about 9:10 a.m. a college secretary pounded on the door, then gestured to students.

“You guys need to evacuate right now. This is not a drill,” the secretary said, according to Barbosa. Barbosa said she didn’t hear any commotion prior to the secretary’s notice. Barbosa and the other left class and were ushered to Liesinger Hall, the student center.

Roommates Courtney Suko and Shannan Pyer, both freshmen, were in a biology lecture hall in the physical science building when a woman came into the room and told the class to leave.

Suko and Pyer grabbed their bags and ran for the door. They both thought it was a drill.

“I didn’t think it was anything shocking or anything like that,” Pyer said.

When they got outside, they saw that police had already assembled.

“You’re wondering if someone would jump out and have a gun or something,” Suko said.

The class planned to assemble in a nearby building, but later moved to the Liesinger building, further from where the incident happened.

As Pyer and Suko waited to be released, they said they saw a girl crying in the same room. The girl told them that she’d been in the room where everything happened. She said she saw a student shoot a professor with a bow and arrow and stab him with something repeatedly.

Pyer said despite the stories circulating, she felt safer knowing she was in a large group further from the physical science building.

Natrona County School District officials put the district’s schools on lockdown after news of the incident, and the Wyoming Medical Center was put on lockdown for 30 minutes Friday morning. The district lifted the lockdown on all schools at 10:30 a.m.

Counselors are available on the second floor of the campus Gateway Building on a walk-in basis, Casper College said on its Facebook page. College employees without duties related to the attack may close their offices and leave campus, the college said.

Fraud Investigation Former CEO of National Lampoon Sentenced to 50 Years

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indiana financier and former chief executive of National Lampoon convicted of swindling investors out of about $200 million was sentenced Friday to 50 years in prison by a judge who told him his “deceit, greed and arrogance” had cost many of his victims their life savings and dreams of a comfortable retirement.

U.S. District Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson said Timothy Durham had violated the trust of thousands of small investors from the American Heartland who had been careful with their money and invested it with him in hopes of traveling in their retirement, paying off their mortgages and perhaps buying a small home in Florida.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

She told the court Durham had plundered their money so he could live a luxurious lifestyle.

“We drive Chevys and Buicks and Ford, not Ducatis. That’s how most of us roll,” Magnus-Stinson said. “When they’re defrauded, it is the most serious offense because it undermines the fabric of this country.”

Durham said he felt “badly” for all the families who lost their savings, but never admitted any wrongdoing.

“Of course I feel terrible they lost all their money. My family has lost all of its investments,” he said. “I feel very badly for all the people, especially the people here today.”

Durham, who was led into the courtroom in handcuffs and leg chains and wearing a gray-green prison jumpsuit, had no visible reaction when the judge pronounced his sentence. The 50-year-old rocked briefly in his chair afterward and fidgeted with a pen he held with his both his hands, quietly telling Magnus-Stinson “No, your honor” when she asked if he had any questions about his sentence.

But he appeared dazed as he was handcuffed and led from the room into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

John Tompkins, Durham’s lawyer, did not immediately return a call for comment after the sentencing.

James Cochran, an associate of Durham, was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison, while accountant Rick Snow received a 10-year sentence. Both Durham and Cochran were taken away in handcuffs to serve their sentences, but Snow was allowed to leave with his family, pending a determination on where he will serve his sentence.

A jury in June found the three men guilty of securities fraud and conspiracy. It also convicted Durham, a major Indiana Republican Party donor who resigned his post at National Lampoon in January, of 10 counts of wire fraud, while Cochran and Snow were convicted on some of those counts.

Prosecutors have said the three stripped Akron, Ohio-based Fair Finance of its assets and used the money to buy mansions, classic cars and other luxury items and to keep another of Durham’s company afloat. The men were convicted of operating an elaborate Ponzi scheme to hide the company’s depleted condition from regulators and investors, many of whom were elderly.

Tompkins argued at trial that Durham and the others were caught off-guard by the economic crisis of 2008, and bewildered when regulators placed them under more strict scrutiny and investors made a run on the company.

The charges against Durham led several GOP politicians, including Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, to return hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions sought by Fair Finance’s bankruptcy trustee.

Attorneys for all three men had asked the judge for lighter sentences than those recommended. Prosecutors had wanted 225 years for Durham, and Tompkins sought a total of five years – three years in prison and two years of home detention.

Magnus-Stinson said she couldn’t give Durham the maximum sentence because it would be as “puffed up” as statements that he held $280 million in assets. But she noted that though he testified that he “felt terribly” for the victims, he had shown no sincere remorse.

Magnus-Stinson said she was unmoved by testimony about Durham’s generosity over the years, including giving to charities and also to political campaigns.

“It’s very easy to be generous if you’re using someone else’s money – and that’s what was happening here,” she said.

U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, Joe Hogsett, said Friday’s sentencing means families can finally begin putting their lives back together.

Barbara Lukacik, 74, an Ohio nun who said she lost $125,000 in the Fair Finance collapse, said she had forgiven Durham and the others but testified before the sentencing that a lengthy sentence was warranted.

“If you receive a short sentence – a slap on the wrist, so to say – I do not think it will be enough time for your heart and your conscience to realize your sin and your greed,” she said.

Jane Kalina of Wayne County, Ohio, testified Friday that her 86-year-old father lost more than $170,000 – some of it from the sale of a family farm – that he had invested.

She said after the sentencing that she was satisfied, and was particularly pleased by Durham’s lengthy sentence.

“I think he was the culprit and the sentence fits the crime,” she said. “We’re happy that he will be very old when he gets out.”

Wrongful Death Magoffin County Man Charged with Manslaughter in Deadly DUI Crash

A Magoffin County man who suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash that killed his passenger has now been charged with second-degree manslaughter.

Police said Jonathan Keeton, 29, was drunk and driving almost 20 miles over the speed limit in July, when he wrecked on Interstate 75 in Boone County, killing Connie Sutherland, 31.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

“My baby ain’t gonna be here. My daughter’s never coming back,” said Jerri Allen, Sutherland’s mother, who wears a picture of her daughter close to her heart.

Sutherland is buried right outside of Allen’s home in Magoffin County:.

“I cry everyday. This is all I have to come to. I don’t have her anymore,” Allen said.

Sutherland’s family identified Keeton as Sutherland’s sister’s fiance.

“He was a wonderful guy. He was a great guy. I mean I couldn’t tell you how long it’d been since he drank,” said Allen.

While Keeton has been indicted on several charges, including manslaughter, Allen feels there is no charge strong enough for what has happened: “What he is facing, is not good enough because there’s never enough justice when you lose one of your children. They bury us, we don’t bury them.”

LEX 18 reached out to Jonathan Keeton to get his side of the story. The staff at the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center originally said he wanted to talk, but when our crew arrived, we were told he had changed his mind.

Missing Person? Mysterious Note Left in VA Hotel

Police in Virginia are looking for a man from Quebec in connection with a possible missing child case.

According to police in Hillsville, Virginia, staff at a local hotel found a note on Thursday morning that appeared to be written by a young girl who called herself Jasmine Hines. The note said that she is missing and that police are looking for her.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Cpt. Jason Hawks said that the note asked for authorities for help.

Investigators searched through lists of missing people for anyone by the name of Jasmine Hines, but found nothing.

Hawks said police have little information to go on for the time being.

“As of right now, we are looking at it as a possible abduction, possible missing person [case],” he said.

This case is one of the most bizarre investigations that Hillsville Police Sgt. Jame Alderman has ever seen.

“I’ve been here 25 years and this is one of the more crazy situations,” he said.

The room where the letter was found was registered under the name of a man from Lachute, Que. named Pierre Morand, Alderman said.

When police reviewed security footage, they saw a man leaving the room in the company of another person.

“He checked in as one person and two people left, so that’s heightened our concern,” Alderman said.

Hillsville police have been in contact with the RCMP, Interpol and the FBI. Alderman said that investigators know the license plate for the man’s car and are checking video cameras near the interstate to find out what direction he was travelling in.

Officers believe they are looking for a Caucasian girl, but it is unclear at this point whether the letter could be a hoax.

Alderman said that for now, as far as investigators are concerned, the man has done nothing wrong.

“We hope that [this is] somebody’s idea of a bad joke and that these folks were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said.

Quebec provincial police said they have not received any request for help on this case.

Drug Dog Sweep Mexican Drug Gang Member Arrested in Alexander County, NC

TAYLORSVILLE N.C. – A Morganton man was arrested on drug charges Tuesday in connection with a drug trafficking operation in Alexander County and surrounding counties.

Jose Ivan Gallardo, 27, of John Coffey Road was charged with possession of a schedule II controlled substance and placed under a $50,000 bond in the Alexander County Detention Center.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

An Alexander County Sheriff’s Office patrol sergeant observed a suspicious vehicle in a residential driveway at 7154 N.C. 16 South in Taylorsville, according to a news release from the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office. The sergeant approached the vehicle and the driver identified himself as Gallardo.

Gallardo told the officer he was a caretaker for the residence. The sergeant continued to investigate and requested a drug detection canine and handler respond to the scene. When the canine arrived, officers were alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics in the passenger compartment of Gallardo’s vehicle.

Officers discovered about 16 grams of methamphetamine concealed inside a baby diaper container in the vehicle.

The residence where Gallardo’s vehicle was stopped has been under the surveillance of the Narcotics and Patrol Divisions for the past six months. The release states that the residence has been identified as a possible narcotic storage location used by Mexican nationals involved in large-scale drug trafficking.

Based on the narcotics seized from Gallardo’s vehicle and intelligence gathered in the investigation of the residence, officers obtained a search warrant for the residence. Inside, officers discovered and seized nearly one pound of crystal methamphetamine, a quantity of cocaine, heroin and marijuana, and an assault rifle.

Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have also become involved in the investigation due to Gallardo’s status as a possible illegal immigrant.

Gallardo admitted to officers during the investigation that he is a member of the Zetas Mexican drug cartel. More arrests are possible as the investigation continues.

Fraud Investigation Reveton Ransonware

A new extortion technique is being deployed by cyber-criminals using the Citadel malware platform to deliver Reveton ransomware. The latest version of the ransomware uses the name of the Internet Crime Complaint Center to frighten victims into sending money to the perpetrators. In addition to instilling a fear of prosecution, this version of the malware also claims that the user’s computer activity is being recorded using audio, video, and other devices.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

As described in prior alerts on this malware, it lures the victim to a drive-by download website, at which time the ransomware is installed on the user’s computer. Once installed, the computer freezes and a screen is displayed warning the user they have violated United States Federal Law. The message further declares that a law enforcement agency has determined that a computer using the victim’s IP address has accessed child pornography and other illegal content.

To unlock the computer, the user is instructed to pay a fine using prepaid money card services. The geographic location of the user’s PC determines what payment services are offered. In addition to the ransomware, the Citadel malware continues to operate on the compromised computer and can be used to commit online banking and credit card fraud. Below is a screenshot of the new variation.
Reveton warning screen

This is not a legitimate communication from the IC3, but rather is an attempt to extort money from the victim. If you have received this or something similar do not follow payment instruction.

It is suggested that you:

File a complaint at www.IC3.gov.
Keep operating systems and legitimate antivirus and antispyware software updated.
Contact a reputable computer expert to assist with removing the malware.
