Private Detective Former Kentucky Man Arrested for Shooting at Drivers in MI

The manhunt for a shooter who’s allegedly taken aim at two dozen Michigan drivers has led to a man who recently moved from Kentucky.

According to multiple websites, Raulie Casteel was employed by an environmental consulting group in Spencer County. People in Casteel’s rural Detroit area neighborhood call him quiet and say he just moved there with his wife about two months ago.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

The Michigan task force assigned to investigating the 24 highway shootings say they are confident Casteel is responsible for the crime spree that has terrorized motorists since mid-October. The 43-year old’s gun and car, which matches the description of the black 4-door vehicle used in the shootings, was seized when he was taken into custody Monday night.

Police say the shooter fired at drivers who passed him going the opposite direction. Out of all the shootings, only one driver was hit and his injuries were minor.

“You know to have something like that, I mean, it’s very random, so you know it could have been us one day,” said neighbor Brent Byer. “You know, who knows what would have happened if something would have escalated? It’s good to know that hopefully they got the guy and unfortunately for the family, it’s very sad because they’re very nice people.”

Casteel’s mother told a Detroit newspaper that he moved to Taylorsville, Kentucky around 2005 and was the president of an environmental consulting company. She says Casteel, his wife and daughter moved back to Michigan last summer after his company dissolved and he couldn’t find other work.

The stepbrother of an autistic Mazomanie (may-zoh-MAY’-nee) man who had been missing since June has been charged with killing him and burying his body.

At a news conference Tuesday, Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney said Matthew Graville was tortured and abused by his stepbrother who killed him, froze his body in a freezer and then buried it near Mazomanie last July.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Twenty-eight-year-old Jeffrey Vogelsberg is charged with first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse. The sheriff said the 27-year-old Graville lived with his stepbrother in Mazomanie before Vogelsberg moved to Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington with his wife, who’s in the Army.

The State Journal ( http://tinyurl.com/d2thve3) says sheriff’s officials are also holding a relative who’s accused of stealing from Graville’s bank accounts. A third person is suspected of helping Vogelsberg hide the victim’s body.

Pedophile Tracking James Phillips Edwards of Kansas City

James Phillip Edwards, who drugged children with sleeping-pill-laced ice cream so he could create child porn, has plans for the lifetime federal prison sentence he received Tuesday.

Edwards, 63, whom prosecutors have described as “off the charts” and a “serial predator of girls as young as 4 years of age,” has written that he wants to lead a “pro-pedophile” movement from prison, according to court records.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

“He is more interested in changing society’s views regarding sex with children than controlling his own deviant interests and behavior,” wrote Dr. Kent Franks, a psychologist specializing in sexually violent predators who studied Edwards’ case for prosecutors.

Edwards denied to another mental health professional that he felt any relief at being taken into custody.

“Hell no,” he purportedly said, court records reported. “I enjoyed what I was doing.”

U.S. District Judge Dean Whipple sentenced Edwards to 245 years in prison.

“Your conduct is beyond comprehension to the average person,” Whipple said. “It is my belief you cannot live in society.”

Though Edwards has brashly defended his life as a pedophile in the past, his comments before Whipple Tuesday were more measured. But he said he still views as “unjust” laws that make what he called voluntary sex between adults and children illegal.

He also offered his “heartfelt regret” to those who were harmed by his actions.

“I got the message and I will never reoffend,” Edwards said. “I still have these feelings. They’re never going to go away.”

Two of Edwards’ victims, who were 11 and 12 at the time they were assaulted, testified that they each have undergone therapy since the assaults and must deal daily with depression and, sometimes, anger.

“This is really not OK for anybody to do this to anyone,” said one young woman, identified in court only as Jane Doe No. 5.

A mother testified that Edwards assaulted two of her daughters.

“I stand here every day to watch them fight to get back to where they were…to where they would feel good about themselves,” she testified. “I think he should have to pay dearly for what he did.”

An Edwards relative whose children were assaulted told Whipple of hearing sentencing preferences among family ranging from “rot in prison for 245 years” to “burn in hell.”

“The only way we’re going to feel safe and secure in this world is if people like this are put away forever,” he said.

Edwards pleaded no contest in March 2011 to 21 counts charging him with production of child pornography, drugging his victims, advertising child porn on the Internet and possession and attempted distribution of child porn.

Edwards videotaped his assaults on 13 girls over a four-year period and recorded his research on drugging them in a document entitled “How to Molest Young Girls,” which investigators found on his computer.

In it, he described mixing sleeping pills into root beer, ice cream or chocolate syrup to disguise the taste, authorities said.

Authorities also recovered a document called “Pedo Handbook,” in which Edwards included a section on “Drugging Children and Pre-teens.”

After Edwards came under suspicion on a child porn possession charge in 2009, investigators uncovered his handbooks, which included his notes on sedative dosages for children, taking into account each victim’s weight and age and the activity the molester planned.

Prosecutors said that all of the molestations charged in this case occurred in Edwards’ south Kansas City home between 2001 and 2005. However, Edwards suggested that the charges did not encompass all of his crimes against children.

“We just moved there in 1999 and I started this in 1997,” Edwards said at his plea hearing.

Edwards also disagreed with a prosecutor’s suggestion that two incriminating interviews he voluntarily gave to investigators amounted to confessions.

“I told people what I did, but I didn’t consider it a confession,” Edwards said. “I just told the truth.”

Edwards’ plan to become a pro-pedophile activist came to light in an article he wrote and which mental health professional reviewed after he was incarcerated, according to court records.

“In this essay, entitled ‘The Pedophile Minority,’ Edwards declared that he has decided to be the standard-bearer for pedophiles and to start while he is in prison,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Katharine Fincham wrote in a sentencing memorandum to the court.

Fincham urged Whipple to fashion a “virtual life sentence” for Edwards.

“He has a personal philosophy that encourages others to accept what he’s doing,” Fincham said.

Assistant Federal Public Defender Travis Poindexter pleaded with Whipple to sentence Edwards to only 15 years. As serious as his offenses were, he did acknowledge that his conduct violated the law and agreed to resolve the case without a trial, Poindexter said.

“If you consider those who would have made a protracted drama out of this, he did not do that,” Poindexter said.

Private Detective KY Man Returns From Hosptial Finds Home Burglarized

The victim of a violent home invasion attack Monday returned home from the hospital Tuesday morning to find his home ransacked and items stolen.

Jeff Flannery says two men broke through the front door of his home on Lisa Drive Monday morning, demanding drugs and money. He says they attacked his fiance’ and brutally beat him.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

“They was trying to zip-tie us together, and I wouldn’t let them. They had a gun to my girlfriend’s head. All I could think about was getting to her. They were beating me to death with a crowbar.”

EMS took Flannery and his fiance’ to the hospital. Police say one of the suspects pepper-sprayed the woman.

Flannery was released from the hospital Tuesday and returned home to find his house burglarized. The thieves took his TV, electronics, jewelry and other items from the home.

He says he has no idea why anybody would target him.

Investigators say they don’t know if the home invasion and burglary are connected.

Fraud Investigation 6 Year Mortgage Fraud Investigation

A six-year federal mortgage fraud investigation is over with the Nov. 5 sentencing of a Utah man accused in connection with a West Virginia property scam that cost lenders nearly $2 million.

Raymond P. Morris, 51, of South Weber, Utah, appeared in federal court, where he was sentenced to nearly five years in prison for his leadership role in the scheme.

“I am here today to take full responsibility for my actions,” Morris told the court. “I know my actions have harmed a community, and I have accepted that.”

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

A September 2011 indictment was filed against Morris along with 38-year-old Hurricane resident Deborah L. Joyce and 37-year-old Utah resident Michael Hurd.

According to the indictment, Morris was associated with the Utah-based real estate investment club 100X Inc., and he also was the sole principal in Nevada-based Integrity Financial Solutions Inc.

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s office, Joyce was a Putnam County real estate developer who wanted to build single-family homes in the Stonegate subdivision.

Joyce obtained falsely inflated appraisals from two appraisers, James Thornton, 48, and Mark Greenlee, 50, according to the news release.

“Joyce sent those appraisals to Morris who in turn pitched the purchase of these same properties to the 100X members as a real estate investment opportunity.”

Prosecutors accuse defendants of misrepresenting facts concerning the true sales price, the home’s fair market value, the down payment’s source, cash paid to the out-of-state borrowers and commission paid to Morris.

The indictment states Morris arranged for members to use The Gift program, which was a “seller-funded down payment assistance program” operated by Hurd, to close and purchase properties at the inflated price.

The news release states lenders funded their own down payment and made initial mortgage payments through this program.

“His fall was farther than his ascent. A few people were surprised that he did not have a single hour in training in real estate or financial service,” said Morris’ attorney John Carr. “He would have been well-served if he had done so.”

U.S. District Judge Thomas Johnston agreed saying Morris had a “talent for leadership.”

“It’s a shame you had to employ those talents in the way you did,” he said. “If you didn’t, you could have been successful.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Ryan said the people who suffered the most from the scheme are people the court can’t compensate.

“We have individuals in Stonegate looking to refinance their homes but they can’t because of the stigma of the subdivision. The only thing we can do is give an appropriate sentence,” Ryan told the court.

U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said Morris and Hurd ran a similar scheme in Utah. Morris’ sentencing is set for Nov. 13 and he could face no less than 51 months to run concurrently with his West Virginia sentence.

“He upset an entire community balance in Stonegate. … It’s difficult to get appraisals from Stonegate because of that stigma,” Goodwin said in a news conference following the sentencing.

Johnston deferred judgment on restitution until parties determine the exact amount of one of the properties.

However, Morris could end up paying from $3.5 million to $4 million in restitution. The final determination of the property value also will affect the restitution of Deborah Joyce, Hurd and Thornton.

Pedophile Tracking Okolona, KY Man Sentenced to 262 Months

LOUISVILLE, KY—United States District Court Judge Charles R. Simpson, III recently sentenced an Okolona, Kentucky, man to 262 months in prison, followed by a life term of supervised release, for violating federal child exploitation laws, announced David J. Hale, United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky. Ronald Underwood, a/k/a “Ronnie Underwood,” age 56, had previously pled guilty to six counts of violating federal law.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

According to the plea agreement in the case, Underwood pled guilty to using the Internet to attempt to induce, entice, or coerce a person under the age of 18 to engage in illegal sexual activity, distributing child pornography, receiving child pornography, and possessing child pornography. The case started when, on January 25, 2008, the Louisville Metro Police Department received an anonymous report on their “574-LMPD” tip line about a possible sex crime. The report summary stated, “Caller stated she wanted to report a Myspace.com account holder that is living in the Louisville area. Friend ID# 138284905. Goes by the name of Ronnie and states he is 50 years old. The caller stated, ‘His page was very pornographic and may be a pedophile.’ Caller stated, ‘The friends on his space are all really young.’” The tip line operator forwarded the report to the Crimes Against Children Unit for investigation.

On January 28, 2008, a CACU detective utilized an undercover Myspace.com profile and sent the Ronnie profile a “Friend Request.” The undercover profile depicted the detective as a 13-year-old boy. On January 29, 2008, the user of the Ronnie profile approved the request. The two began a series of online communications lasting until March 2008. During the communications, Underwood appeared nude on a web camera for what he believed was a 13-year-old boy and engaged in a sexual act. He repeatedly asked the boy to send Underwood sexually explicit photos or to use a web camera for a return show. During the online communications, Underwood discussed engaging in sexual activity with the boy, including intercourse. On March 28, 2008, law enforcement officials executed a state search warrant at Underwood’s residence where he was located and placed under arrest. During the search, images of child pornography were located in Underwood’s bedroom. The images depicted young males approximately 12-15 years old in various sexual acts. One of the detectives recognized Underwood’s bedroom from the online communications, during which Underwood had used a web camera to transmit images to the person he believed was a 13-year-old boy.

Additionally, the FBI arrested a person living outside Kentucky for the receipt and possession of child pornography. During the forensic examination of that person’s computer and Internet accounts, law enforcement officials discovered that the individual had received child pornography from one of Underwood’s screen names, OKO1256. Underwood distributed the child pornography video to the other person on or about February 3, 2008. On April 4, 2008, a CACU detective sent a state search warrant to America Online (AOL) requesting “any and all information on the AOL accounts OKO1256, Sexyjeffrey14, and Sexyjeffrey16.” AOL responded to the search warrant. Information received from the search warrant revealed that Underwood had distributed child pornography files to 24 individuals. Similarly, the AOL information showed that on February 21, 2008, Underwood received a child pornography movie file from a screen name not controlled by Underwood. Additionally, on March 11, 2008, Underwood (screen name Sexyjeffrey14) distributed the same movie file to another individual. At all times relevant to the charges in the indictment, Underwood engaged in the conduct while in Jefferson County, Kentucky. A forensic examination of Underwood’s computer revealed the presence of numerous videos and still images depicting child pornography.

Assistant United States Attorney Jo E. Lawless prosecuted the case. The Louisville Metro Police Department, in conjunction with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, conducted the investigation as part of Kentucky’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children and to identify and rescue victims.
