Fraud Investigation Colorado Based Abound Solar

Officials from Colorado-based Abound Solar are facing a criminal investigation over possible fraud, it has emerged.

The District Attorney’s Office for Weld County, Colorado, has revealed it is investigating an unspecified number of employees of the PV manufacturer, which declared bankruptcy in July and is no longer operating.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

The DA’s office said its probe was investigating three main allegations.

The first is that Abound officials knew they were selling defective products but persuaded investors to invest in the company anyway.

The second main allegation centres on whether Abound misled financial institutions when it applied for a bridging loan to keep the company afloat until it received federally guaranteed loans. The company received a US$400 million loan from the US Department of Energy, US$70 million of which it had drawn down before going bankrupt.

A third allegation concerns possible consumer fraud, and whether Abound officials knowingly sold consumers defective products.

The office of DA Ken Buck said no charges had been made in connection with the investigation.

Missing Person Bodies of North Carolina Teens Found

The search for Jake Ziegler and Ray Pierce ended Sunday afternoon east of Columbia, about two-thirds of the way on the teens’ planned trip from Catawba County to Myrtle Beach, with the discovery of what appears to be their bodies.

Kershaw County authorities say the bodies of two young men were discovered about 4:20 p.m. Sunday in the Wateree River, off Interstate 20. The bodies were inside a green Pontiac G-6, carrying the same license plate number as the vehicle Ziegler was driving.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

The two teens, seniors at Bandys High in Catawba County, had not been seen since the early-morning hours of Oct. 13, when they left a party and told friends they were driving to the beach to see the sunrise.

Family, friends and law enforcement officials had spent thousands of hours in the two subsequent weeks, looking for the teens. They had focused the search on the Myrtle Beach area, due in part to tips from psychics, and on Interstate 77 in Fairfield County, because the last contact from the teens — a text sent by Ziegler, 18 — came from that area, about 90 minutes after the two left Catawba County.

Instead, the discovery was made about 40 miles farther along the trip to the beach. Ziegler and Pierce, 17, apparently had reached the Columbia area and turned east on I-20. About 20 miles east of Columbia, they apparently crashed.

Authorities told reporters late Sunday that it appeared as if the Pontiac G-6 veered across the median and went down an embankment, stopping in the dark water of the river. A crew of four searchers from the CUE Center for Missing Persons found the bumper of the car sticking out of the water Sunday afternoon.

It was near mile marker 96, about halfway between U.S. 601 and U.S. 521, a few miles south of Camden, S.C.

Monica Caison, the CUE Center’s director, told WCNC-TV, the Observer’s news partner, that she had a gut feeling to check the area. She said a crew had looked in the area Sunday morning but decided to return.

“We went back for a second time, because I felt strongly about the bridges, and felt we had to do a little bit better,” Caison told WCNC. “That’s when we discovered the bumper that had the tag on it.”

She told WCNC she talked to both families Sunday and shared their grief.

Kershaw County authorities plan an autopsy Monday.

Meanwhile, the discovery of the car was a low point in two emotional weeks for Bandys High students and staff. The school’s spirit rock had a newly painted message, “We Love J & R,” on Monday morning.

Joe Pierce, Ray’s father, said he received the news about authorities finding the car while he was at the movies with his other children, trying to take their minds off their missing brother. He said his family was touched that so many people helped look for his son.

“That county did everything humanly they could,” he said late Sunday night. “I never saw such effort in my life than what these people did. Still, as each minute goes by, as each second goes by, you start to lose more and more hope.”

During the two weeks, people involved in the search walked along stretches of I-77 and on roads in Horry County. They also passed out fliers at Bank of America Stadium, before and after the Carolina Panthers’ game last week.

Insurance Fraud Physical Therapist in MI Sentenced

GRAND RAPIDS — A physical therapist who provided services in Lansing and who admitted committing insurance fraud has been sentenced to 13 months in prison and has paid $2.25 million in damages, officials said.

In May, Chyawan Bansil, 61, of Farmington Hills, pleaded guilty in federal court to health care fraud and money laundering charges, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Grand Rapids. He was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

Prosecutors said Bansil committed the fraud between 2007 and January of this year. They said he defrauded Medicare, Medicaid, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan out of more than $1 million by billing for nerve conduction studies and needle electromyography tests that he did not perform or “provided in such a cursory manner as to not be of any clinical value,” court documents say.

Undercover Lansing police officers investigating prescription drug diversion received suspicious services from Bansil at a doctor’s office in Lansing, officials said.

Federal investigators then examined medical practices connected to Bansil as well as his financial records, officials said, and confirmed that he was billing for services he did not perform. It was also determined he was illegally laundering the proceeds of his fraud scheme in order to avoid taxes.

As part of his plea agreement, Bansil forfeited over $500,000 in assets and paid an additional $2.25 million dollars in damages. He also paid nearly $250,000 in back taxes that were uncovered by the IRS during the investigation.

The case resulted from a joint investigation conducted by Lansing police, the Internal Revenue Service, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the Office of Inspector General for the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Michigan Attorney General’s Office.
