WATERLOO, Iowa — A Waterloo woman has pleaded guilty to charges she attempted to set an ex-boyfriend’s house on fire in March.

On Friday, Gary pleaded guilty to reduced charges of second-degree arson and second-degree burglary.

She faces up to 10 years in prison on each count. Assistant County Attorney James Katcher said the state will ask for consecutive sentences when Gary comes up for sentencing.

The criminal mischief and assault charges will be dismissed, according to Katcher.

Gary also faces a probation revocation hearing in an unrelated case. She was charged with bringing marijuana into a correctional facility where she was serving time.

According to authorities, the fire March 24 damaged curtains but did not spread to the rest of the home. No injuries were reported.

Private Detective Police Trying to ID Body Found Burning in Wheelchair

Authorities on Sunday were still investigating the death of a man found dead Saturday in a burning wheelchair in southwest Atlanta.

The man’s identity remains a mystery, and investigators are not disclosing details about the cause of the fire and whether it was suspicious until they can identify him, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

The unidentified man was found in a ditch in a wooded area between a fastfood restaurant and a Family Dollar store on Metropolitan Avenue. The incident was called in just after 5 p.m., and firefighters at a nearby Kroger grocery store responded within 2 minutes.

Atlanta Fire Rescue Captain Sean Johnson said it was not until firefighters had begun to extinguish the blaze that they realized a person was in the wheelchair. “He was not alive when we extinguished him,” Johnson said.

Johnson said there was no smell of any chemical that might have started the fire. He also would not speculate whether the wheelchair itself could have been the cause.

A wrecker truck was used the pull what remained of the wheelchair from the ditch.

“The body will go to the medical examiner for a full forensic evaluation,” said Atlanta police homicide unit commander Lt. Paul Guerrucci. “Samples of the area where the fire took place will more than likely be sent to the GBI for analysis.”

Guerrucci, however, said police were not calling the fire suspicious.

“We don’t have any information thus far to indicate suspicious circumstances,” he said. The scene, however, was being processed to preserve evidence just in case a different determination is made.

Police did not know why the individual was in the wooded area. They also did not immediately know the man’s age or race. They continued to question witnesses, Guerrucci said.

Private Detective Wisconsin Mall Shooting

BROOKFIELD, Wis. (AP) – Deputies searched Sunday for a shooter after multiple people were wounded when someone opened fire at a spa near a suburban Milwaukee shopping mall.

Brookfield police told WTMJ-AM the shooting happened about 11 a.m. Sunday at a spa across the street from the Brookfield Square Mall. The mall and a country club adjacent to the spa were locked down, local media reported.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

Calls to police from The Associated Press rang to the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department. A woman who answered the phone there said deputies were looking for an active shooter but did not provide any other information.

A bomb squad from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department responded to the spa Sunday afternoon. Spokesmen for the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also said their agencies had agents participating in the investigation.

Milwaukee FBI spokesman Leonard Peace said his agency sent a SWAT team and hostage negotiators, among others.

Beth Strohbusch, a spokeswoman for Froedtert Memorial Hospital, said four shooting victims were taken there, and three more were expected. She said none of the four already received were in critical condition.

WISN-TV reported police were asking people in the mall’s parking lot to clear out, because they had set up operations there.

Tactical teams were on the scene, along with at least 20 fire, ambulance and police vehicles. A medical helicopter that had been on the ground left Sunday afternoon.

The shooting took place at Azana Day Spa, a two-story, 9,000-square-foot building across from the mall in a middle- to upper-class community west of Milwaukee.

It was the second mass shooting in Wisconsin this year. Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran and white supremacist, killed six people and injured three others before fatally shooting himself Aug. 5 at a Sikh temple south of Milwaukee.

The shooting at the mall took place less than a mile from where seven people were killed and four wounded on March 12, 2005, when a gunman opened fire at a Living Church of God service held at a hotel.

Wrongful Death Body Found in Shooting Suspects Home in Inglewood

Investigators have not yet identified the body found in the smoldering Inglewood home of the suspect believed to have opened fire on a family Saturday, killing a 30-year-old man and his 4-year-old son.

Lt. Cheryl MacWillie of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said Sunday morning that an autopsy would not likely occur until Monday. The corpse was found at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, partially buried in rubble.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

The house was rented by Desmond John Moses, identified by Inglewood police as the suspect in a pre-dawn rampage Saturday, allegedly shooting five members of a family who lived next to him. The father and his 4-year-old son were fatally wounded and the mother, 28, and two other children, a 7-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy, are hospitalized in critical condition. An 8-year-old boy was not injured.

Authorities said the parents tried to protect their children. The father was found slumped over two of the children; the mother, despite being shot in both of her legs, ran from the residence carrying the 4-year-old.

Authorities did not release the family’s name, but neighbors identified the couple as Filimon and Gloria Lamas. A woman sobbing at the scene Saturday said the two had been high school sweethearts.

Authorities believe Moses, in his mid 50s, also set the house on fire. He lived in the rear of a lot with two other rental houses, one of them the victims’, in the 4900 block of West 99th Street. He had not paid his rent in years and the landlord said he had obtained an eviction order Tuesday giving Moses 15 days to move out.

He was described by neighbors as a recluse, and authorities said his house was jammed with items, complicating the search through the charred wreckage.

Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Tom Richards said the suspect was a “pack rat.” The house was so full of debris that a ladder truck was needed to help move it.

“That house was filled to the brim with stuff,” he said.

Private Detective 2 Family Member Burned within 6 Months of Each Other

An Owsley County family is left to deal with a bizarre double tragedy after two strange deaths in six months.

James Bennett, 58, was found dead Friday afternoon inside of his home on Ky 3346 in Booneville. Investigators said the man was burned all over.

“He always got along with everybody. I mean, he’s a good fella,” said Ellis Bennett, the victim’s brother. “It hurts me. It hurts me in a way, you know.”

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

A family member caught Ellis Bennett off-guard, telling him of his brother’s passing: “I said what happened? She said they found him in the house, dead.”

While the 58-year-old used a wheelchair to get around, the Owsley County Coroner told LEX 18 that Bennett was found burned outside of that chair. His home had also suffered no real fire damage.

“His daughter-in-law told me there were two little fires, two little places burnt. One in the bathroom, one burned in the living room,” Ellis Bennett said.

James Bennett’s death was even more bizarre because back in May, his 37-year-old nephew, Randy “Bean” Bennett was discovered burned beyond recognition in a truck on Ky 1411. The cause of death was ruled “undetermined,” resulting from an apparent lack of evidence.

“Seems like it’s happened pretty close together in a way, you know,” said Bennett.

An autopsy was conducted Saturday on James Bennett. Results are expected next week.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
