Arson Investigation Wayne County, Mich. Man Found Guilty

A man on parole for murder in Wayne County was found guilty today of setting fire to a Detroit apartment building last year, forcing elderly residents to jump from the first and second floors.

Terrell Thornton, 33, faces up to life in prison after a Wayne County Circuit Court jury today found him guilty of one count each of arson and homicide/attempted murder.

Judge Timothy M. Kenny presided over more than four days of testimony about the Aug. 9, 2011 blaze in the early morning hours on Detroit’s east side. Investigators said Thornton set fires in both the doorways of the building on Springle Street, one block south of Mack, just east of Conner, forcing a number of residents in their 60s and 70s to jump from their windows.

Nine of the building’s eleven units were occupied. One man had multiple fractures to his leg after jumping from his first-floor unit. Another resident had injuries to her shoulder after leaping from the second floor.

The intended target, a resident of the building, suffered second- and third-degree burns. Investigators said Thornton was angry that the victim had extricated himself from a social group in which Thornton was active.

The man, who is in his early 40s, still wears compression bandages on his wounds.

Thornton’s sentencing is Oct. 16.

Thornton was to be on parole through April, 2013. He was convicted of a July 14, 1996 murder and sentenced on March 17, 1998 to serve 12 to 20 years in prison. He was released on parole on March 4, 2008 after serving 10 years, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections’ Offender Tracking Information System. Information on the circumstances surrounding the case and Thornton’s release were not immediately available.

Missing Person NJ Teen Tweet About Intruder a Hoax

Police say the New Jersey teen who tweeted that someone was in her home, asked her followers to call 911 and then disappeared likely left her house voluntarily.

Kara Alongi gained thousands of followers after asking people on Twitter to call 911 on Sunday because an intruder was in her home. She then went missing, sparking fears that she may have run into foul play. People re-tweeted her message and #helpfindkara trended on the social network.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

A preliminary investigation suggested that no foul play was involved in her disappearance. Investigators later discovered that someone had called a local taxi company at about the time the tweet was posted.

Police say the driver who responded to the Alongi home positively identified the 16-year-old girl as the fare he picked up. He told police he drove her to the Rahway train station.

Police Chief Alan Scherb said her apparent disappearance remains a missing person’s investigation.

“Kara might feel that she will be in trouble if she comes home after this scare and causing a panic,” Scherb said in a statement. “At this point, all everyone cares about is seeing her safe and at her house where she belongs.”

Police responded to Alongi’s home on Hall Drive in Clark Sunday evening. A person who answered the phone at the girl’s home quickly said ‘No comment” and hung up.

“She is currently still missing, but we are confident she left voluntarily,” Scherb told Patch. “No abduction, no foul play. We are investigating this as a missing runaway juvenile.”

On Sunday, Kara Alongi, 16, tweeted that someone was inside her house, asking people to call 911. Now, her parents are staying quiet and police are saying the New Jersey teen is missing. NBC’s Katherine Creag reports.

Twitter users worldwide tweeted messages of good will @KaraAlongi overnight as her initial post asking for help circulated. Many said they were frightened to think about what could have happened to her.

Others were skeptical about her pleas for help, pointing out a tweet that allegedly popped up on Alongi’s account that said: “Why is everyone saying I’m missing? I was jkin haha” and was deleted a short time later.

Identity Theft Pick Pocketting By Scanner

Most of us can’t live without debit or credit cards; they’re almost as good as cash.

But something inside many of the cards can make you vulnerable to ID theft, without even knowing it.

It’s fast…easy…and a thief never even has to touch you.

Walking along Nicollet Mall, Walt Augustinowicz, blends right in with the lunchtime crowd, and that’s the point.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

But he’s on a special mission — Minnesotans look out for each other — so we asked him to look out for you.

Augustinowicz is carrying a computer case. Hidden inside: a credit card reader you can find for $100 bucks online.

Walt asked: “we’re going to do a little experiment today,” on willing participants only.

We watched as he worked the masses along 7th and Nicollet, and it didn’t take him long.

“I got your visa number, “ said Augustinowicz, as he patrolled the sidewalk, looking for valuable information to steal.

“I just got your Visa number is that your Visa number?” he asked people as they were out for lunch on a warm Minnesota day.

Without laying a hand on anyone, he got close enough to swipe important information, like credit card number, expiration date and in some cases, even a name.

Most people had the same reaction, “Wow, wow that’s crazy!”

We asked him if we are somehow empowering the bad guys give them an idea they don’t already have?

Nope.

Augustinowicz replied, “They already know how to do this.”

It’s mainly “new” debit and credit cards at risk…and passports issued since 2006, those with a little icon on them that looks like a radio transmission logo.

The tiny microchip embedded in the card called an RFID, radio frequency identification chip. It contains a signal, capable of transmitting your information, with no on/off switch.

“We want people to know they have these cards so they can take steps to protect themselves, otherwise this crime will become rampantly widespread, “ Augustinowicz told us.

Banks and retailers prefer the new technology in these cards because it’s supposed to make paying for things quicker and more convenient. You simply wave a card over a scanner, and you’re paid — done. No swiping or signing.

But crooks can intercept the same signal.

We showed our experiment a computer security expert Mark Lanterman to find out if this demonstration is a scare tactic, or if the threat of ID theft like this is real?

“Is it a security threat? Yes, however as you can see in the video’s the stars really need to line up,” Lanterman remarked.

Of the 20 volunteers we talked to over lunchtime, we accessed the private information of 25 percent of them, 1 in 4 people.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS contacted major banks, TCF, Wells Fargo, and Chase. None wanted to go on record about security measures involving their cards, but the companies did mention the 3 digit security codes on back of cards couldn’t be read with a scanner like the one we used in the experiment.

As complicated as it is to steal your identity this way, the methods of disabling the chip in your credit card are very simple. Some people use tools lying around the house and simply poke a hole in the chip, without disturbing the magnetic strip.

We found a “hole punch” you probably have laying around the office did the job best.

Keep in mind; you probably should not do that with the chip embedded in your passport, or your driver’s license.

Walt (our volunteer thief from the story) owns the company Identity Stronghold that makes sleeves that act as an RFID blocker, preventing anyone from scanning your card info.

You can buy them online for a few bucks.

Walt’s wallets will cost you between $20-50 with Identity Stronghold, we found other cheaper versions looking on sites like Amazon.com.

If you really want to do it the frugal way, wrap your cards in tinfoil. It does the same thing, but you may get some strange looks at the checkout line.

Identity Theft Brick, NJ Man Billed $4,385 from Verizon

It’s really not something you want to see on your credit report.

It was an uncollected $4,385 past-due balance from Verizon. Brick resident Eric Humphreys figured that it was what kept him from getting a loan recently. He also remembered he had gotten some bills from Verizon for its FiOS TV service a couple of years ago.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

But here’s the thing: Verizon does not offer FiOS where he lives in Brick.

“I have never had a problem with my credit in my life,” Humphreys said. When he pulled up his credit report, and saw the hit from Verizon, “I realized it was that.”

How this could happen was a mystery.

The information on his credit report raised some questions. It said the Verizon account was opened in April 2006. “But I didn’t buy my house until September 2008, and I had Cablevision before that when I rented.”

He remembered he had been billed for FiOS in the past. A billed dated April 16, 2010, was for $3,663.87, including $3,592.70 past due. He had called Verizon to complain.

“You guys don’t even offer FiOS in my area so how am I getting a bill for FiOS?” he would say.

“I stopped getting bills after my fourth or fifth complaint,” Humphreys said.

Humphreys has since filed a fraud complaint, but he was asked to prove where he has been living since 2006 and file a police report.

“It’s just your mistake because you don’t even offer this service,” Humphreys said.

Humphreys sent an email to Press on Your Side. “Please HELP!!!!”

Press on Your Side contacted Verizon Communications.

Spokesman Lee Gierczynski said he would have someone at the company look into the matter. It was escalated to customer advocacy at Verizon.

The initial inquiry produced some interesting information. The FiOS service was for a home in Rowlett, Texas, and was installed on April 15, 2006, and disconnected on Oct. 21, 2010, Gierczynski said. The last payment on the account was Oct. 15, 2009. The final billing address was Humphreys’ in Brick.

Did Humphreys ever live in Texas? No. Prior to Brick, he lived in Lakewood for more than four years.

Customer advocacy teams in New Jersey and Texas spoke with Humphreys. The case has been worked on for several weeks.

Humphreys, the Brick resident, won’t be responsible for the Verizon bill from Texas, Gierczynski said.

So what’s the story? Verizon’s fraud unit is investigating this as a case of “suspected identity theft,” Gierczynski said.

It appears there was an outstanding balance for a Verizon account, which was sent to a collection agency, and the agency somehow linked Humphreys in New Jersey to the Texas address, he said in an email.

Humphreys thanked Press on Your Side for the help.

“I still have to show them proof of where I have been living since 2006 and file a police report, but they did determine that it was absolutely identity theft, and as soon as I can get those documents to them, they will clear it up,” Humphreys said in an email.

“I’m very thankful for the help you provided with this matter. The responses I am getting from them is now timely and they are no longer hanging up on me because they can’t figure out the mistake,” he said.

Wrongful Death Floyd, Iowa Casey Frederiksen Charged with Killing of Iowa Girl

FLOYD, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation and Floyd County Sheriff’s Office have charged 33-year-old Casey Frederiksen with the 2005 murder of Evelyn Miller, 5, of Floyd.

Frederiksen is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sexual abuse, both Class A felonies.

He was the boyfriend of Evelyn’s mother, Noel Miller.

liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Frederiksen was home with Evelyn and two other children while Noel Miller was working a night shift at an area nursing home on July 1, 2005. Noel Miller reported her daughter missing when she returned home about 6 a.m. that morning.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon in Floyd, authorities said the official cause of death was sharp force injuries, including wounds to the neck.

Evelyn’s body was found in the Cedar River on July 6 and, before Thursday, the cause of death was not disclosed. Authorities said Evelyn’s body was found fully clothed, but with signs of sexual assault.

Danny Slick and Randy Patrie of Charles City said Evelyn was alive when the pair visited the apartment about 2 a.m.

Slick was sentenced in February 2007 to one year and one day in prison for lying to FBI agents investigating the girl’s disappearance.

Noel Miller served two days in jail in 2007 on a charge of going armed with intent. She also lost her bid to get custody of the two young sons she had with Frederiksen, who were put in foster care shortly after Evelyn’s death.

Frederiksen went to federal prison on a child pornography charge in 2006 after investigators found about 1,650 images on his computer hard drive, some depicting young girls having sex with adult men.

In 2009, a drug indictment alleged Frederiksen, already serving a 14-year prison sentence on child pornography charges, conspired with others to manufacture methamphetamine from 2004 through June 2005. He pleaded guilty and in 2010 was sentenced to up to 10 more years in prison.

Frederiksen will remain in the United States Penitentiary in Marion, Ill., until he can be transported to Floyd County to stand trial.

Richard and Linda Christie of Waterloo, Evelyn’s paternal grandparents, were at the news conference.

“This is the happiest day in the last seven years,” said Richard Christie. “We are very thankful.”

Linda Christie called Thursday “a glorious afternoon” and thanked investigators, those who searched for Evelyn in 2005 and the media for keeping the case in front of the public.

Asked if she could forgive Frederiksen, Linda Christie said it was too early to forgive.

“He raped and killed my granddaughter.”
