Arson Investigation Bronx Woman Charged with Arson and Manslaughter

City fire marshals arrested this weekend a Bronx woman and charged her with intentionally setting a fire in her apartment that led to the death of her boyfriend.

Wendy Walston, 46, was charged with manslaughter, arson and reckless endangerment.

Fire officials say Walston started the fire on the night of September 12 inside a second-floor apartment she shared with 50-year-old Thomas Galvin at 2727 University Avenue in Kingsbridge.

The fire caused so much smoke that residents on the fifth floor panicked and one man knocked out the windows with his bare hands, leaving graphic blood stains on the building.

Other residents saved themselves by hanging out on the roof as more than 100 firefighters put out the flames.

Galvin died of his injuries, while 10 other people were seriously hurt, including a four-year-old child.

Insurance Fraud Public Adjuster from Englewood Gets Probation

ESSEX COUNTY — A former public adjuster from Englewood was sentenced to 18 months probation today for defrauding her clients and insurance companies out of more than $42,000.

According to a statement from Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa, an Essex County judge also ordered 59-year-old Sheena Clarke to surrender her public adjuster’s license, pay $42,519 in restitution and perform 300 hours of community service.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

She was indicted in Feburary, and pleaded guilty to insurance fraud on Aug. 13.

Between 2005 and 2010, Clarke submitted fraudulent claims to four insurance companies claiming that properties of her clients in Newark, Paterson, Irvington and East Orange had been damaged and subsequently repaired.

Clarke then collected reimbursements from the companies when in fact, the repairs had never been completed, according to Chiesa.

Insurance fraud is a third-degree crime, which generally do not carry jail sentences for those without a prior criminal record.

Missing Person Dave Schroeder of Onalaska, Wis.

The official search has been called off for an Onalaska, Wis., man who has been missing for a week, but members of his church are continuing the hunt for one of their worship leaders and musicians.

More than 100 people from official agencies and civilian volunteers have been involved this week in a ground, air and water search for 45-year-old Dave Schroeder, a diabetic who needs medication and has been missing since his family last saw him a week ago at their home on Brice Prairie.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“He hasn’t been found,” Pastor Steve Meyer of Journey Lutheran Church said after the sheriff’s office called off the ground search at 4 p.m. Friday. “They’ve exhausted the search area.”

That area covered hundreds of acres of fields, wooded areas and marshes, Meyer said.

Church members are shifting their focus to distributing search fliers.

Investigators checked bus stations and talked to Schroeder’s friends, relatives and co-workers to determine whether he might have left town, sheriff’s Capt. Mike Horstman said.

Disappearing like this is not typical behavior for Schroeder, his pastor said.

“This is a big mystery. There is nothing to indicate this radical behavior,” Meyer said.

“We don’t know whether this is intentional or if he became disoriented,” he said. “You don’t know if he was hitchhiking and got picked up by the wrong person.”

Schroeder, who has three sons ranging from elementary to college age, had been scheduled to lead services and play the guitar at
Sunday services, Meyer said.

Schroeder was last seen wearing a bright blue T-shirt, jeans and black shoes. He is about 6 feet tall and 300 pounds with graying black hair.

Arson Investigation Boys in Jackson, Mich. Set Playground Fire

JACKSON, Mich. (AP) — Two Michigan boys — ages 8 and 9 — could be charged with arson for a fire that destroyed a slide structure at a Jackson playground.

Jackson County Prosecutor Hank Zavislak told MLive.com for a story (http://bit.ly/Sr7XuP ) Saturday that he will issue petitions for the charges and bring the boys under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court.
Officials want to find out why the boys set the fire and what can be done to prevent similar behavior from occurring again, Zavislak said. They could be enrolled in an intervention program.

“These are very young children. It’s a whole different approach,” he said.
The boys told police they set the Aug. 25 fire at Partnership Park.
Devastated by the fire at her favorite playground, 6-year-old Akaysha Dempsey-Owens raised more than $100 in one day this month with a lemonade stand.
Local businesses and residents have started cleanup of the playground. Crews on Friday dismantled and threw away scrap metal left at the park.
“I think it’s important for that area to put that park back up so the kids can have a place to play that is safe,” said Ken Williams.
Williams’ Concord Excavating is expected to remove poles and other materials next month from the playground’s foundation.

Wrongful Death Body Found in Shallow Grave in Sky Valley, CA

The body of a 33-year-old Desert Hot Springs woman was found in a shallow grave in the desert community of Sky Valley early Friday morning, Sept. 28.

A Thousand Palms man is in custody on suspicion of her murder.

The woman, whose name has not been released pending formal identification, was found at 1 a.m. after a search that included the use of a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department bloodhound. The discovery followed a chase Thursday afternoon that began at a home on Longvue Road where the body was found.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Carl Richard Perdock was booked into the Indio Jail. His bail was set at $1 million.

According to a Sheriff’s Department news release, deputies responded at 1:29 p.m. Thursday report from a man in the 23000 block of Hot Springs Road in Thousand Palms who said his roommate was depressed over a break-up with an ex-girlfriend and was making threatening statements.

At one point a California Highway Patrol helicopter and police dog joined in the hunt. Perdock was eventually taken into custody.
