Cyber Investigation Malware Attacks Greatly Increasing

On Sept. 4 McAfee released the McAfee Threats Report: Second Quarter 2012. Of major importance was the dramatic increase in malware samples detected in the last four years. In fact there was a 1.5 million increase in threats since the first quarter of the 2012. According to the report, the malware sample discovery rate has accelerated to nearly 100,000 per day.

McAfee Labs has spent significant time and research addressing the problem of malware attacks. As one of the largest companies providing anti-virus software it is required to keep abreast of current threats and to identify key malware variants and patterns.

For example, Apple has proudly advertised that Macs didn’t get viruses. However as Macintosh increases its PC market share it becomes a desirable target for hackers. This summer, the company scaled back its security claims.

“Over the last quarter we have seen prime examples of malware that impacted consumers, businesses, and critical infrastructure facilities,” said Vincent Weafer, senior vice president of McAfee Labs. “Attacks that we’ve traditionally seen on PCs are now making their way to other devices. For example, in Q2 we saw Flashback, which targeted Macintosh devices and techniques such as ransomware and drive-by downloads targeting mobile. This report highlights the need for protection on all devices that may be used to access the Internet.”

Additionally the report indicates that malware writers are successfully targeting popular consumer and business platforms, such as Android OS. Virtually all new mobile malware detected in Q2 2012 was directed at the Android platform, and was comprised of SMS-sending malware, mobile botnets, spyware and destructive Trojans. The report highly recommends that all mobile users must be on high alert as malware focused on mobile devices shows no signs of slowing down.

In terms of attacks via website visitation, this quarter McAfee Labs recorded an average of 2.7 million new bad URLs per month. In June, these new URLs were related to about 300,000 bad domains, which is equivalent to 10,000 new malicious domains every day. Of the new bad URLs, 94.2 percent host malware, exploits or code that have been specifically designed to hijack computers.

The McAfee Labs team of 500 multidisciplinary researchers in 30 countries follows the complete range of threats in real time, identifying application vulnerabilities, analyzing and correlating risks, and enabling instant remediation to protect enterprises and the public. The full copy of the report is available to the public.

Pedophile Tracking Mom and Teenager’s Friend Trapped Pedophile

A convicted sex offender is facing charges of immoral communications with a minor after he was caught sending photos of his penis to a 15-year-old girl on Facebook. The 15-year-old girl wasn’t actually a real person, and that’s the start of what makes this story particularly interesting.

The fake Facebook profile was actually a creation of a mother and her daughter’s friend. After learning that her 17-year-old daughter was dating a convicted sex offender, 19-year-old William Elms, Julie Myrfors enlisted a teenage family friend to help her set up the fake account to trap him. The two created an account for a girl named “Ashley,” who they listed as 15 years old.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Once they tricked Elms into friend requesting Ashley through the staging of a fake squabble on the network, “Ashley” stuck up a dialogue with Elms. Soon, Elms was sending pictures of his genitalia to an email account set up for “Ashley.” According to the Skagit Valley Herald (Sedro-Wooley, Washington), Elms attempted to get “Ashley” to go camping with him and spend time discussing lewd sexual acts. “He also told her that if anyone asks, she should say she is 16 years old,” they report.

Although Myrfors orchestrated this Facebook sting without the help of local police, law enforcement stepped in when they were notified of the chats and pics. Elms is currently on probation stemming from a conviction for third-degree child molestation, which is defined by the Washington State criminal code as “sexual contact with another who is at least fourteen years old but less than sixteen years old” when the perpetrator is at least 4 years older than the victim.

According to NBC News, the Myrfors showed the evidence to their daughter, who even watched some of the lewd conversations with “Ashley” live, as they occurred.

“My daughter didn’t know we had done this. I invited her on to begin watching live. She started watching conversations on our fake little person,” said Mrs. Myrfor. “The hardest part as a parent was watching her heart break.”

Facebook has a strict policy against convicted sex offenders maintaining accounts, and even monitors chats for illegal communications. In this situation, the parents could have notified Facebook and probably had Elms’ account revoked, but I guess they wanted to do a little more than that.

Insurance Fraud Caldwell Women Pleaded Guilty

BOISE, Idaho – A repeat offender from Caldwell received up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of insurance fraud.

Martha Patricia Feely, sentenced last week in 4th District Court, was already on felony probation in a California insurance fraud case in 2009 when she submitted forged performance bond documents to three southwestern Idaho government agencies.

Performance bonds are necessary to bid on public jobs and ensure a contractor will fulfill its obligations.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

Such bonds also ensure subcontractors and suppliers will be paid.

Attorney General Lawrence Wasden said Friday Feely’s duplicitousness violates a system where companies usually work ethically to ensure fairness on public works jobs.

When one person breaks the rules, he said, it puts honest business owners at a disadvantage.

Feely must serve at least two years.

Missing Person Dacula Man’s Body Located

Gwinnett County Police have identified the victim in a single car fatality accident on Highway 316 near Harbins Road in Dacula as Quinton Ayers, 22, who was reported missing last week.

Ayers, a UGA student, was last seen in Athens around 1 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 31. His last cell phone activity was traced to a location near the Gwinnett County Airport.

His vehicle was discovered Sept. 3 approximately 40 feet off Highway 316.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“It was resting on its side and appeared to have hit a tree at significant speed,” said Gwinnett County Police public information officer Cpl. Jake Smith in a released statement.

Smith added that the vehicle was spotted by a passing tractor trailer driver who was able to make out the truck’s undercarriage due to his elevated position.

At this time, police do not believe any other vehicles were involved and do not have any information regarding how fast the vehicle was traveling at the time of the accident or whether alcohol was involved.

Highway 316 was shut down for several hours while police investigated the crash and reopened just before 10 p.m.

Private Detective NY Man Throws Acid in Daughter’s Face

NEW YORK (AP) – A man hurled acid in his daughter’s face in a gruesome attack that sent her into a street screaming for help as her skin peeled and her clothes disintegrated, police and witnesses said.

As his 49-year-old daughter sat on his couch in Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon, Jerome Lynch abruptly left the room, returned with a cup of what she thought was water and doused her with it, she later told a cousin, according to the Daily News.

Then the corrosive burning started, and Darlene Lynch ran outside as her clothes disintegrated and her skin fell from her face, witnesses said.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

“You could see the smoke coming off her body,” Clarissa Shakespeare told the newspaper. “Everyone was just traumatized and scared. Her skin looked like melting wax.”

Bystanders poured water on the victim, helped pull away her clothes and covered her with a sheet, witnesses said.

Her 69-year-old father was arrested on an assault charge. Information on his arraignment and lawyer weren’t immediately available Sunday.

Darlene Lynch is the main caregiver for her father, who uses a wheelchair and has been deteriorating mentally in recent years, said a cousin, Dominique Goodwin, who was in Brooklyn on a visit from her home in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The daughter was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said. The hospital declined to give an update on her condition Sunday.

Goodwin, told the Daily News that Darlene Lynch may lose her left eye because of the attack.

“(Darlene is) asking why her father did this. She doesn’t understand,” Goodwin said.

Shakespeare said Jerome Lynch sometimes poured bleach and ammonia in his building’s hallway to deter children from playing there. But another niece said he generally welcomed spending time with relatives.

“He’s usually laughing, smiling, telling jokes,” Celeste Lynch told the Daily News.

Missing Person Missing Florida Millionaire UPDATE

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Notes from a U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue team show that life jackets and religious texts were found aboard a missing South Florida oil tycoon’s boat, but he had left his watch and wedding ring at home.

The Sun Sentinel obtained the notes through a Freedom of Information Act request. Commander Darren Caprara tells the Sun Sentinel ( http://sunsent.nl/OQrxQe) that the notes compiled by multiple officers involved in the 48-hour air-and-sea search for Guma Aguiar don’t prove a planned suicide.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Aguiar’s boat washed ashore in Fort Lauderdale in June with its engine still running. Police found no blood on the boat and no evidence of foul play.

The Coast Guard notes show that all the boat’s life jackets were accounted for.

Aguiar is still missing.
