Insurance Fraud Arkady Suleymanov

A Staten Island man was busted for insurance fraud after claiming he was last behind the wheel of his Maserati five days after the sports car was found torched in Brooklyn.

Arkady Suleymanov may have thought he was in good hands with Allstate, but he should have gotten the dates straight before coming up with his tall-tale for the insurance company examiner.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

FBI special agent John Penza acknowledged in the criminal complaint that the person identifying himself as Suleymanov in the taped phone interview with an Allstate representative may not be the defendant.

“The individual sounds younger and appears to speak English more proficiently than does Suleymanov,” Penza said in the complaint.

Suleymanov, the registered owner of the 2007 Maserati, has two grown sons who have not been charged.

Firefighters found the burning vehicle in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, on Nov. 9, 2011. Suleymanov claimed that he drove the car to Queens on Nov. 14 to visit his sister and parked it outside her Forest Hills building, where it allegedly was stolen.

Suleymanov was released on $200,000 bond.

Wrongful Death Missing Man’s Son Arrrested in His Murder

TROY (WWJ) – The 21-year-old son of a missing Troy man is sitting behind bars Thursday morning, awaiting murder charges in connection with his father’s disappearance.

Police arrested Patrick Mikes Jr. Wednesday afternoon at a Rochester Hills restaurant after recovery of “an incredible amount of evidence” from the family’s home shed new light on the disappearance of 55-year-old Patrick Mikes Sr.

“Based upon a review of the evidence presented, representatives of the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office authorized a request for an arrest warrant, charging Patrick Joe Mikes Jr., the victim’s son, with homicide open murder,” Troy Police Capt. Robert Redmond said in an overnight news conference.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Mikes Sr.’s sons said he left on his bike July 27 when they reported him missing two days later. But Redmond said blood found in the basement where a violent confrontation took place indicates that Mikes Sr. was beaten to death.

“The DNA blood analysis evidence puts Mr. Mike’s blood, Mr. Mikes Sr. the missing person, with his son Patrick’s blood kind of together, indicating that a struggle ensued between the two of them,” said Redford.

Mikes Sr.’s body has yet to be found, but a search is planned for Thursday in and around Montrose, near Flint. A black and red Cannondale Super 6 road bicycle he reportedly was riding has also not been recovered.

“We will have approximately 35 officers, we will have 12 K9 teams and we have several of our citizens on patrol that do work for us in the city of Troy going with us,” said Redmond. “I’m not going to release all the data on how or why, but we believe we are in the right area.”

Police are focusing their search on a stretch of I-75 from Troy to Montrose. Investigators also want to hear from anyone who saw the car Mikes Jr. was driving, a beige 2002 Infinity I35, in the search area on Saturday, July 29 between the hours of 10:45 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Mikes Jr., who early on was named a person of interest in his father’s disappearance, was arrested Aug. 1 after being charged with using credit cards belonging to his younger brother. He was jailed on $50,000 bond but was released when his maternal grandparents bailed him out.

His attorney has said there’s “no evidence” that shows Mikes Jr., a senior at University of Notre Dame with a double major in psychology and pre-med, played a role.
Missing Troy Mans Son Facing Murder Charge

Patrick Mikes Sr.

Mikes Sr. is a white man, about 6 feet tall and 170 pounds, with short gray hair. He was last seen wearing a yellow shirt and black spandex shorts.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Troy Police Department at 248-524-3477 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

Arraignment for Mikes Jr. is set for later Thursday and WWJ Newsradio 950 will be in the courtroom.

Missing Person Women Comes Forward in 25 yr Old Case

ELLENVILLE, N.Y. –A new claim from an old friend is shedding light on the missing person’s case of Joseph Helt, a teen who disappeared on a mountain near Ellenville on a cold January night in 1987.

“She was a classmate of Joe’s and she has stated that there was a conversation between her and one of the other people that were with Joe that night,” said Beth Churchill, Joe’s aunt.

According to the woman, two of those people confessed to her shortly after Joe’s disappearance that he was murdered in a fight over marijuana. It’s a shocking claim to Joe’s aunt.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“I never heard it. She said that she reported it to a school official back then and being that she was a kid herself, she thought that she did the right thing and you know, she’s standing by what she said,” said Churchill.

And for friends of Joe’s, it’s a lead long overdue.

“It took long enough. How can these people live with themselves all these years, if that is the case? What kind of heart do they have,” asked Armando Rodriguez, Arod’s Barber Shop owner.

And as many questions remain unanswered, there’s one thing that Joe’s aunt says she does know

“I know he’s not coming home. Whether it was an accident or something else I don’t know, but he’s not here,” said Churchill.

She says not placing blame on anyone, but isn’t ruling out the claim.

“I’m not doubting her words,” said Churchill.

Police aren’t ruling out the claim either, although they aren’t commenting on any leads as it remains an open, active investigation.

“Any information that comes either to the state police or this agency, that information, or any leads that may develop as a result of that are investigated to its fullest, they are exhausted until we can find no more avenues to explore,” said Chief Phil Mattraciom of the Ellenville Police Department.

And together the community remains hopeful that the case can be resolved and they’ll get closure they’ve been waiting for for 25 years.

“If there is anybody else with information maybe they’ll come forward also now that they’ve heard that she has,” said Churchill.

“Hopefully we can finally put this to rest so that everything can be at rest,” said Rodriguez.

Officials urge anyone with information regarding this case to contact New York State Police.

Private Detective Women Burned in Car Fire

A car with possible hazardous materials inside caught fire near a busy Madison County road Wednesday night, sending one woman to UK Hospital with burns.

The dramatic scene unfolded around 8 p.m. just off the Eastern Bypass in Richmond.

Police and fire crews had part of South Killarney Lane shut down for about an hour, while they battled the blaze and tried to figure out what started such a bizarre fire.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

“I didn’t have a clue what was happening,” said Cindy, a witness who was inside the Best Western nearby, when the victim ran in for help. “I looked up, saw a blond-headed woman come in. She was screaming bloody murder, ‘somebody help me!'”

Cindy got a closer look: “I noticed that on her shoulder that there was pieces of flesh just kind of peeling away.”

Police said the victim was inside the car, when for some reason, it caught fire, burning her all over.

“All of a sudden, she ran back out the door and started stripping her clothes off and was covered all over in burns on her arms and everything,” Cindy said.

Crews rushed the victim to UK Hospital, where the fire department told LEX 18, the woman was decontaminated after possible hazardous materials were found in the car. They said a passenger was also decontaminated as a precaution.

Investigators haven’t said what they believe led to the fire.

The victim’s name and condition have not been released.

Fraud Investigation IC3 Scam Alerts

This report, which is based upon information from law enforcement and complaints submitted to the IC3, details recent cyber crime trends, new twists to previously-existing cyber scams.
FAKE POLITICAL SURVEY

The IC3 has been notified of a scam involving telephone calls conducting a multiple-choice “political survey.” Following the survey, the recipients are told they won a free cruise to the Bahamas. After providing a website address for legitimacy, the caller requests the “winner’s” email address for notification purposes and credit card information to cover port fees. The website has very limited information, but does contain a few photos, testimonials, and “Caribbean Line” banner, in an attempt to convince visitors it is legitimate.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html
ONLINE PHONEBOOK

The IC3 has received several complaints regarding a phonebook website. Complainants reported that anyone could post other individuals’ information. Some reported being verbally bullied, had uncensored comments, or false accusations posted about them. Personal information that could be listed on the website included: full name, unlisted cell phone numbers, email addresses, direct links to a person’s private Facebook account, and any other information or photos someone wants to add. The website also allows users to anonymously call anyone listed on the site directly from the web, as well as track them with GPS.
FREE CREDIT SERVICE WEBSITE

The IC3 has received over 2,000 complaints regarding a particular website that is claiming to offer “free” credit services such as credit scores and credit monitoring. Customers reported being charged a monthly service fee. However, the terms of the agreement advised that the “free” report only lasts for a limited time. At the end of the free term, the website used the customer’s supplied financial information to charge a monthly membership service ranging from $19.95 to $29.95.

The terms and agreement from the website states the following:

“For Subscription Services which include a free-trial period, if you do not cancel your free trial within the free trial period, you will be charged at the monthly rate in effect at that time for the Subscription Services for which you enrolled. Your debit or credit card (including, if applicable, as automatically updated by your card provider following expiration or change in account number) will continue to be charged each month at the applicable monthly rate unless and until you cancel the Subscription Services.”

The website, according to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), has been given an F rating by the BBB for the following reasons:

1037 complaints filed against the business.
8 complaints filed against the business that were not resolved.
17 serious complaints filed against business.
Advertising issue(s) found by the BBB.

CITADEL MALWARE DELIVERS REVETON RANSOMWARE IN ATTEMPTS TO EXTORT MONEY

On May 30, 2012, the IC3 released the following PSA warning consumers about a new Citadel malware platform used to deliver ransomware, named Reveton:

The IC3 has been made aware of a new Citadel malware platform used to deliver ransomware, named Reveton. The ransomware lures the victim to a drive-by download website, at which time the ransomware is installed on the user’s computer. Once installed, the computer freezes and a screen is displayed warning the user they have violated United States Federal Law. The message further declares the user’s IP address was identified by the Computer Crime & Intellectual Property Section as visiting child pornography and other illegal content.

To unlock their computer the user is instructed to pay a $100 fine to the US Department of Justice, using prepaid money card services. The geographic location of the user’s IP address determines what payment services are offered. In addition to the ransomware, the Citadel malware continues to operate on the compromised computer and can be used to commit online banking and credit card fraud. Below is a screenshot of the warning screen.

Warning Screen

This is an attempt to extort money with the additional possibility of the victim’s computer being used to participate in online bank fraud. If you have received this or something similar do not follow payment instructions.

It is suggested that you:

File a complaint at www.IC3.gov.

The IC3 continues to see variations of the scheme and a rapidly growing number of complaints. The PSA is available at http://www.ic3.gov/media/2012/120530.aspx .

The US-Cert released the following revised alert on June 25, 2012 :

Vulnerability Note VU#649219

SYSRET 64-bit operating system privilege escalation vulnerability on Intel CPU hardware

Some 64-bit operating systems and virtualization software running on Intel CPU hardware are vulnerable to a local privilege escalation attack. The vulnerability may be exploited for local privilege escalation or a guest-to-host virtual machine escape.

Intel claims that this vulnerability is a software implementation issue, as their processors are functioning as per their documented specifications. However, software that fails to take the Intel-specific SYSRET behavior into account may be vulnerable.
Description

A ring3 attacker may be able to specifically craft a stack frame to be executed by ring0 (kernel) after a general protection exception (#GP). The fault will be handled before the stack switch, which means the exception handler will be run at ring0 with an attacker’s chosen RSP causing a privilege escalation.
Details from Xen

CVE-2012-0217 / XSA-7 – 64-bit PV guest privilege escalation vulnerability

A vulnerability which can allow a 64-bit PV guest kernel running on a 64-bit hypervisor to escalate privileges to that of the host by arranging for a system call to return via sysret to a non-canonical RIP. Intel CPUs deliver the resulting exception in an undesirable processor state.
Details from FreeBSD

FreeBSD-SA-12:04.sysret: Privilege escalation when returning from kernel

FreeBSD/amd64 runs on CPUs from different vendors. Due to varying behaviour of CPUs in 64 bit mode a sanity check of the kernel may be insufficient when returning from a system call. Successful exploitation of the problem can lead to local kernel privilege escalation, kernel data corruption and/or crash.
Details from Microsoft

User Mode Scheduler Memory Corruption Vulnerability – MS12-042 – Important

An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists in the way that the Windows User Mode Scheduler handles system requests. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code in kernel mode. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full administrative rights.

Mitigating Factors for User Mode Scheduler Memory Corruption Vulnerability

Mitigation refers to a setting, common configuration, or general best-practice, existing in a default state that could reduce the severity of exploitation of vulnerability. The following mitigating factors may be helpful in your situation:

An attacker must have valid logon credentials and be able to log on locally to exploit this vulnerability. The vulnerability could not be exploited remotely or by anonymous users.
This vulnerability only affects Intel x64-based versions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.
Systems with AMD or ARM-based CPUs are not affected by this vulnerability.

Details from Red Hat

RHSA-2012:0720-1 & RHSA-2012:0721-1: It was found that the Xen hypervisor implementation as shipped with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 did not properly restrict the syscall return addresses in the sysret return path to canonical addresses. An unprivileged user in a 64-bit para-virtualized guest, that is running on a 64-bit host that has an Intel CPU, could use this flaw to crash the host or, potentially, escalate their privileges, allowing them to execute arbitrary code at the hypervisor level. (CVE-2012-0217, Important)

TrendMicro posted the following article on June 4, 2012:

Malicious PowerPoint File Contains Exploit, Drops Backdoor

We discovered a malicious MS PowerPoint document that arrives via an attached file attached to specific email messages. The file contains an embedded Flash file, which exploits a software bug found in specific versions of Flash Player (CVE-2011-0611) to drop a backdoor onto users’ systems.

Infected ppt Sample

Users who open the malicious .PPT file triggers the shellcode within the Flash file that exploits CVE-2011-0611, and then drops “Winword.tmp” in the Temp folder. Simultaneously, it also drops a non-malicious PowerPoint presentation file “Powerpoint.pps”, tricking users into thinking that the malicious file is just your average presentation file. Based on our analysis, “Winword.tmp” is a backdoor that connects to remote sites to communicate with a possible malicious user. It is also capable of downloading and executing other malware leaving infected systems susceptible to other, more menacing threats such as data stealing malware.

Trend Micro detects the malicious PowerPoint file as TROJ_PPDROP.EVL and the dropped backdoor file as BKDR_SIMBOT.EVL. Reports, as well as our own analysis, confirmed that this kind of malware has been used for targeted attacks in the past.

TROJ_PPDROP

Recent threats are no longer limited to malicious files disguised as ordinary binaries (such as .EXE file) attached to emails. These specially crafted files can be embedded in commonly used files such as PDF, DOC, PPT or XLS files. In this particular scenario, users are unaware of the attack since TROJ_PPDROP.EVL also displays a non-malicious PowerPoint file to serve as a decoy.
Reliable Vulnerabilities: Effective Infection Gateways

This case also shows that cybercriminals are continuously taking advantage of previously reported vulnerabilities in popular software such as MS Office applications, Flash etc. In a previous blog entry, we uncovered that old and reported software bugs such as CVE-2010-3333 and CVE-2012-0158 are still being exploited by attackers. This finding highlights two things. First, exploits created for reliable vulnerabilities remain effective cybercriminal tools. Second, most users do not regularly update their systems’ with the latest security patch, which explains why attackers are continuously exploiting these bugs.

Process Server Man Arrested After Pulling Gun on Server

FORT MYERS SHORES, Fla. – A process server found herself looking down the wrong end of a gun in Fort Myers Shores on Tuesday.

Lee County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 61-year-old David Gould after he allegedly threatened the process server outside his home in the 13000 of Caribbean Blvd.

The server had gone to Gould’s front door. He told her to leave or he was going to call the law. She returned to her vehicle and to copy down the number on the license plate of the vehicle that was parked in the driveway. When she looked up, Gould was standing before her, pointing a rifle-like gun at her.

http://liarcatchers.com/process_service.html

He then put his finger on the trigger and said to the victim, “Pull out or die.” As the victim was putting her vehicle in reverse, Gould is accused of screaming at her that she was “gonna die.”

Gould is facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Private Detective Warrant Issued for Wanted Man’s Mother

Police have issued a warrant for the arrest of the mother of a man on the run since walking away from his trial in Lexington last month.

John Buckley IV walked away from the courthouse just before a jury handed down a guilty verdict on a rape charge. He’s been the subject of a nationwide manhunt ever since.

Now, police say they are looking for his mother, Sandra Merritt. They say she filed a fake police report stating a stranger stole her car. Investigators say they think she knew her son took it. The vehicle later turned up in Georgetown several days after Buckley’s disappearance.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

Merritt’s last known address is in Colorado.
