Wrongful Death Murder Suspects Commits Suicide in Utah

A man suspected of killing a 39-year-old Colorado Springs woman stole an airplane and then fatally shot himself early Tuesday morning in Utah, a spokesman for the St. George, Utah police said.

Capt. James Van Fleet confirmed that Brian Joseph Hedglin was found in the stolen plane with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Hedglin was being sought by Colorado Springs police in connection with the death of Christina Cornejo, whose body was found in the 100 block of Cheyenne Villas Point in southwest Colorado Springs on Friday.

Cornejo’s death was ruled a homicide, the 13th this year in Colorado Springs, compared to 12 at the same point last year.

Van Fleet said a St. George police officer was patrolling the airport overnight Monday and spotted a motorcyle when he was checking the perimeter fences. The officer drove back to the terminal to investigate the suspicious motorcycle.

“That’s when he observed the plane in the parking lot with several wrecked cars around it,” Van Fleet said.

Upon further investigation, the officer found Hedglin’s body in the SkyWest airplane. Van Fleet said the body had identification with it confirming that the man was Hedglin. Police also looked up the registration of the motorcycle and found it belonged to Hedglin.

St. George officials said they wouldn’t release the make or model of the motorcycle because of the ongoing investigation.

According to a press release from SkyWest, the airplane was a Bombadier CRJ-200, described as a small regional jet. The release said that a SkyWest employee who is “now deceased” was involved in the incident. The employee was on administrative leave, the release said.

SkyWest spokeswoman Amanda Hesse said she could not confirm whether Hedglin worked for the airline or was the employee involved in the incident. A Colorado Springs police release said that detectives contacted SkyWest prior to Tuesday’s incident and had them deactivate Hedglin’s access cards in case he showed up at an airport.

The Utah airport remained closed Tuesday as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and St. George officials investigated.

Hedglin was a food service specialist with the Colorado Army National Guard. He was never deployed.

He was scheduled to stand trial in El Paso County in August on charges of criminal mischief, theft and harassment. Hedglin was arrested in March when Cornejo told police that he invaded her apartment, took some things he gave to her and smashed a computer. He was free on $10,000 bond at the time of Cornejo’s death.

According to court documents, Hedglin and Cornejo had been dating each other for four years when Hedglin was arrested.

Colorado Springs police spokeswoman Barbara Miller said detectives will continue to investigate Cornejo’s death “to tie up all the loose ends and make sure that (Hedglin) was indeed the person responsible.”

“They won’t close the case until they’ve exhausted every lede,” Miller said.

Wrongful Death 2 Headless Bodies Found in Detroit River

Hollis Fussell of Detroit made a gruesome discovery this morning along the Detroit River — a saw and the body parts of a man and woman whose torsos were found floating nearby.

Fussell had made his way to his regular fishing spot off Alter Park when the heating and air conditioning business owner and property investor spotted the body parts.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

At 10 a.m., a white leg with polished toenails, two other white legs, a yellow-handled cordless circular saw, a brown suitcase and a sheet still lay on the sandy bottom of the Detroit River, in about 3 feet of crystal clear water where the river meets Lake St. Clair.

“That was a gruesome sight,” said Fussell, a few hundred feet down the shore this morning as police worked the scene. “Ain’t that ugly. It wasn’t a nice sight for me, trying to sit down and enjoy my fishing. We know the city is rough, but man ‘o man.”

Police believe the parts belong to two torsos discovered earlier in the river and a canal near where Alter Road ends at the water.

“This isn’t just ‘I’ll kill you,’” said Detroit Police Eastern District Commander Steve Dolunt, standing along the shore in the overgrown, abandoned park. “This is vicious.”

The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office is on the scene, along with Detroit Police investigators and officers from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

A U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officer was on routine patrol in a vehicle onshore at about 6:30 a.m. when the first body was spotted in Fox Creek, just off the Detroit River, U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Justin Westmiller said. The body was floating near an abandoned park on the city’s east side.

The second body was spotted shortly after, about 7:15 a.m., nearby in the Detroit River, Westmiller said.

“The (Coast Guard) boat crew came across the second one as they were responding to the first,” Westmiller said. “Both bodies were found without hands, feet or heads. They were clearly cut off.”

Westmiller did not know how long the bodies appeared to have been in the water. The Detroit Police Homicide Unit is now handling the investigation, he said.

“We did the recovery, but we immediately turned it over,” Westmiller said.

Fussell spotted the body parts in the clear water and police were called a short time later.

The Detroit Police dive team went into the river at around noon to recover the body parts. Sgt. Shawn Wesley of the department’s Office of Homeland Security said they’ll mark the parts underwater using a global positioning system, then recover them.

Detroit Police Department spokesman Sgt. Eren Stephens said just before noon that the department had not received any information about the identities of the pair or if anyone had been reported missing that might be linked to the case.

“There are people reported missing every day,” she said.

Missing Person Rudolph Smith

Police yesterday searched the waters off Grace Methodist Church on North Shore in hopes of locating missing man Rudolph Smith.

Meanwhile the 39-year-old’s mother, Madeline Rampersad, said her gut told her there was something “terribly wrong” about her son’s disappearance.

Police confirmed yesterday that a telephone call by a tipster led officers to the motorcycle Mr Smith was last seen riding behind Grace Methodist Church on North Shore.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Acting on a call by a member of the public, police carried out an extensive search operation in the water off the church near the junction with Glebe Road yesterday morning.

A forensic officer was among those on board a police boat, with divers combing the ocean and more officers taking photographs from the shore.

The surrounding area was cordoned off with yellow police tape, with about five officers guarding the scene and more seemingly investigating the scene.

At a press conference held on the church grounds, Detective Chief Inspector Nick Pedro confirmed Mr Smith’s “last known mode of transportation was located in waters in from of Grace Church”.

“A police dive team was activated, and has been searching these waters for any other items that may assist in locating Mr Smith,” he said.

But for Mr Smith’s family there was little comfort on hearing the bike he was last seen riding has been found.

His mother began circulating posters with a photograph of her son and her telephone number last week, urging anyone with information to contact her or the police.

Her phone has been ringing non-stop, but to date there has been no firm word on the fate of her son or his whereabouts since he failed to return home on Monday, July 9.

“All I want to know is where’s my son, I’m holding up as best I can, but not knowing is painful. No matter what he is my son, we love him, I just want him to come home or know what has happened to him,” said Ms Rampersad.

Mr Smith resides with his mother and grandmother on Border Lane in Pembroke. Ms Rampersad said her mother is also “holding up” but neither one of them is at peace.

“Rudy always comes home, he never disappears without a word like this, everything in my gut tells me something is terribly wrong and until I know I cannot rest,” she said.

“I just get up and go to work to keep busy and get my mind off of all of this, its very troubling,” she added.

She confirmed that the Bermuda Police Service has appointed a Family Liaison Officer “to keep the family updated with any developments in the case.” But she said: “All I really want to hear is where is Rudy, or what happened to him, not knowing just hurts so bad.”

Meanwhile, police have stepped up their search for the missing man and are ‘very concerned’ for his safety.

Several persons have been interviewed to date who have either provided written statements or given verbal information.

“We continue to be very concerned for Mr. Smith’s safety, and we are actively pursuing all avenues of information that may assist in determining where he may be, or what may have happened to him since he was later seen,” said Det Ch Insp Pedro.

“You will appreciate that Mr. Smith has many family members & friends who are extremely anxious to learn about their missing loved one.”

When asked by The Royal Gazette if police were still treating this as a missing person investigation, Det Ch Insp Pedro replied: “We’re investigating the circumstances of his disappearance.

“I think what is fair to say at the moment and you will appreciate that the resources that we’re putting into this we’re obviously treating this very seriously and seeking to locate him as quickly as possible.”

As for the reported sightings and the response by family members that they may have been false reports, he said: “We’re following up on all known sightings and that’s part of the investigation.

“I cannot speak to what the family may have said about the reported sightings; but we don’t think he’s been seen since Monday, July 9.”

The officer was also asked to comment on the rumours circulating around the community regarding Mr Smith’s disappearance.

The senior investigating officer said: “It would be completely inappropriate to comment on rumour and innuendo. We deal with facts and evidence and that’s what we’re doing as we always do in cases of this nature.”

Det Ch Insp Pedro also said “other bikes” were recovered at the scene as well.

But finding the bike Mr Smith was riding when last seen “helps to build a picture of his movements, where he may have been, and where he may not have been”.

“Obviously where his bike was is of importance to us, he was last seen riding that bike,” said Det Ch Insp Pedro.

“I would like to urge any member of the public that may know something about this matter that has not already spoken to the Police to come forward and assist.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Serious Crime Unit in confidence at 247-1340, or alternatively to call the confidential and anonymous Crimestoppers hotline on 800-8477.

Identity Theft Suspect Runs Into Victim

MEDFORD, Ore. — Police say an Oregon man tried to cash a check from another man’s account, only to run into his victim at the bank.

Medford police arrested 37-year-old Matthew Frombach on Saturday after the victim’s friend chased him down and tackled him outside the bank.

Police say the 28-year-old victim noticed three forged checks worth $700 had been cashed on his account and went to his bank to discuss it. While he was there, police say Frombach showed up and tried to cash a fourth fraudulent check.

Before authorities arrived, police say Frombach tried to leave the bank and punched the suspect’s friend in the face. The friend chased and tackled him as officers arrived.

The victim ordered new checks about two weeks ago, and police suspect they were stolen from the mail.

Background Checks Wisconsin Pushing to Expand Checks on Gun Buyers

MADISON — Wisconsin’s police chiefs are pushing to expand background checks on gun buyers.

The Wisconsin Chiefs of Police Association and the National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence plan to meet with Wisconsin U.S. Senate candidates on Monday and Tuesday to discuss potential federal legislation that would require buyers in private gun sales to undergo a background check.

http://liarcatchers.com/background_checks.html

Oregon, Wis., Police Chief Doug Pettit is chairman of the WCPA’s legislative committee.

He says currently only people who buy guns from a federally licensed dealer must pass a background check. He says expanding the requirement to all sales would prevent people who can’t legally possess guns from obtaining them.

The chiefs association and the national gun violence prevention group plan to hold a news conference in Madison on Tuesday as well.
