Pedophile Tracking John Hinton

Perhaps the headline atop our Friday front page should have said “Monster” instead of “ ‘Molester’ gets 30 years.”

The story left us sad, shocked, confused – and mad as hell. And we suspect it did you, too.

John Hinton, 62, of Somerset, will spend the next 30 to 60 years in state prison. In all likelihood, he’ll die there. Deservedly so.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

This horrible individual has admitted to sexual offenses against eight young girls at two Somerset Borough homes in 2010 and 2011. Assistant District Attorney Catherine Ann Primavera told Somerset County Judge John M. Cascio last week that prosecutors suspect there are even more victims – perhaps more than 20 in a sickening spree over more than two decades.

His past has also been under investigation in several other counties, including bordering Westmoreland.

Cascio’s welcome response was to impose three consecutive sentences of 10 to 20 years each.

“When I look at the background and the circumstances you utilized, that you took advantage of, to make these victims available to you, the consecutive sentences are warranted,” Cascio told Hinton.

The Somerset County investigation, as reported by our Randy Griffith, showed Hinton had met the children through his church.

How absolutely despicable.

“These girls were put in your trust and your care through adults of families at church,” Cascio said.

“These families trusted you. You violated that trust in the most severe way.”

Indeed.

How this pedophile was able to carry out these sick assaults for so long without getting caught is beyond comprehension.

We can at least take solace in the fact he finally has been stopped, sparing even more young girls from his grubby clutches.

Insurance Fraud Fouad Baladi

An Allentown man faces fraud charges after authorities say he reported the same vehicle damage to four insurance companies.

Fouad Baladi, 38, of the 800 block of North Kearney Street, is charged with two counts of insurance fraud and single counts of theft and attempted theft, court records say.

He was arraigned this afternoon before District Judge Michael J. Faulkner and released on unsecured bail, records say.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

The Lehigh County Insurance Fraud Task Force began investigating Baladi’s claims in March, after being contacted by an insurance company with offices in Upper Macungie Township, records say. An investigator compared photos submitted with each claim and found they showed the same damage to one vehicle, records say.

Baladi’s wife in August filed a claim with Safe Auto Insurance for damage to a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban caused by a hit-and-run crash in Allentown, records say. She received $4,139.72 from Safe Auto, records say.

Baladi in January bought a GEICO policy and seven days later filed an insurance claim for damage caused to the Suburban in an Allentown hit-and-run, records say. Geico paid him $4,307.82.

Baladi in February bought a Nationwide Insurance policy and four days later filed a claim for damage caused to the Suburban in a Bethlehem hit-and-run, records say. Geico paid him $6,031.

Also in February, Baladi bought an Infinity Insurance policy and three days later filed a claim for damage caused to the Suburban in a Interstate 78 hit-and-run near the Route 33 interchange in Northampton County, records say. The vehicle’s repairs were valued at $2,556.49, but Infinity, which has an office at 7310 W. Tilghman St. in Upper Macungie, did not pay the claim, records say.

Fraud Investigation Bryan Copeland

A 33-year-old used car salesman from Orange Park and several cohorts were sentenced in federal court this week including millions in restitution for fraud.

U.S. District Judge Roy B. Dalton Jr. sentenced Bryan A. Copeland to 22 years in federal prison for wire fraud, making false statements against the United States and aggravated identity theft. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said he also must pay about $3.5 million in restitution to the IRS. Copeland pleaded guilty in February.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

He was part of a scheme that involved stealing the identities of hundreds of people from state databases to file phony tax returns.

Dalton sentenced four others for their roles in the scheme — Veronica Olivia Brown, Devron Tracy Tobey, Prientice Cordaemack Hooks and Beatrice Latangela Alphonse.

Brown, 31 of Jacksonville, was sentenced to 30 months and ordered to pay about $768,000 in restitution. Brown allowed Copeland to use her various addresses to file fraudulent returns and receive refund checks, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Tobey and Hooks, both 26 of Jacksonville, opened bank accounts to receive some of the proceeds from the scheme. Hooks and Tobey got 12 months each and about $314,000 and $548,000 in restitution, respectively.

Alphonse, 29 of Miami, helped in obtaining the identity information used to generate the fraudulent returns. She was sentenced to five years and three months, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Identity Theft Matt Schultz

DES MOINES – The Iowa Secretary of State’s Office is refusing to make public emails related to an identity-theft case involving its elected leader Republican Matt Schultz and a former Barack Obama presidential campaign staffer.

Iowa Watchdog asked the secretary of state’s office multiple times for emails related to the case. It also sought access to all documents associated with the former Obama staffer, Zachary Edwards, including written correspondence, emails, police reports, phone logs and written notes to staff.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

But Angela Davis, attorney for Schultz’s office, denied the requests, which have spanned more than a month. She first said officials had no way of knowing who owned specific email accounts. In another response, Davis denied the emails were political in nature and said they were sent to Schultz’s private email address, and therefore exempt from Open Record laws.

“The email you request was sent to a personal email account concerning matters outside the Secretary’s official duties. Therefore, this communication is not subject to your request,” Davis wrote Thursday in her latest response to Iowa Watchdog’s request.

Legal experts, however, disagree. They contend the requested documents are public record.

Davis and Schultz didn’t return calls Tuesday seeking comment. Schultz and his brother, Thomas Schultz, who also is involved, have said little regarding the incident and declined to field all reporter questions.

Edwards, 29, committed identity theft when he sent at least one email saying Thomas Schultz received inappropriate payments from former GOP presidential nominee Rick Santorum, court documents show. He sent that email to Matt Schultz’s Secretary of State office from an email address that was almost identical to the secretary of state’s personal address.

Edwards was also behind a libelous blog post that prompted articles in The Salt Lake Tribune and Politico.com accusing Thomas Schultz and his brother of engaging in unethical or illegal behavior, according to Thomas Schultz’s victim impact statement.

Around the same time, Matt Schultz, 33, faced an ethics complaint for using his office to issue a statement sharply criticizing Jon Huntsman for his failure to participate in the Iowa Caucuses. Matt Schultz received at least $12,500 in campaign contributions from a political action committee Santorum ran. Thomas Schultz was behind the Draft Santorum website urging his candidacy for president.

The Iowa Ethics & Campaign Disclosure Board later tossed out the complaint, saying Matt Schultz didn’t violate state ethics laws.

Identity Theft Former Northern Kentucky Police Chief

COVINGTON—A former northern Kentucky police chief, arrested Friday on wire fraud and identity theft charges, will appear in court today for a detention hearing.

A federal indictment, unsealed late Friday afternoon, charges Carl Mullen, 49, the former chief of the Highland Heights Southgate Police Authority, with scheming to defraud his own department out of more than a hundred thousand dollars. The detention hearing will determine whether or not he will remain in custody between now and his trial scheduled for August 22.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

A federal grand jury in Covington returned the sealed indictment Thursday, which charges Mullen with one count of wire fraud and two counts of aggravated identity theft. Mullen pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Friday.

From January 2010 through November 14, 2011, Mullen allegedly used credit cards in the name of the Highland Heights Southgate Police Authority and in the names of other members of his police department to steal over $115,000.

The indictment alleges Mullen obtained the money in cash advances using these cards and kept the funds for himself.

According to the indictment, Mullen falsely claimed these funds were for legitimate police investigations and directed the financial officer to pay the credit card balances each month in order to continue the fraud.

Kerry B. Harvey, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and Perrye Turner, Special Agent in Charge, FBI, jointly made the announcement.

The investigation preceding the indictment was conducted by the FBI. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tony Bracke.

Mullen faces a maximum of 20 years in prison. However, upon a conviction, the court must consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the applicable federal statutes before imposing a sentence.

The indictment of a person by a grand jury is an accusation only, and that person is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
