Fraud Investigation Kathleen Brower Pleaded Guilty

ATHOL — An Athol woman pleaded guilty to $58,000 in public assistance fraud as part of a state auditor’s investigation that uncovered $1.8 million of fraud from January to March.

Kathleen Brower of Athol pleaded guilty to fraudulently collecting $58,170 from the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program and Supplemental Security Income. She was placed on probation for three years and ordered to pay full restitution in Boston Municipal Court.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

In a quarterly progress report issued yesterday, state Auditor Suzanne M. Bump said examiners with the office’s Bureau of Special Investigations found evidence of $1.8 million in fraudulently obtained public assistance benefits and services.

Ms. Bump said examiners completed 963 investigations, identifying 401 people who defrauded the state out of welfare, food stamps, child-care services, health care benefits, public housing or cash assistance.

In the current fiscal year, the agency received 1,824 complaints of suspected fraud and found $2.7 million in fraudulent claims.

Ms. Brower was among those identified in the report.

“In today’s economic climate, with so many struggling to get by, it is more important than ever to make sure every dollar given in benefits goes to those who are actually in need,” Ms. Bump said. “BSI oversight identifies millions of dollars in fraud every year.”

Complaints can be filed through the state’s fraud hotline at (617) 727-6771 or by emailing infoline@sao.state.ma.us. Complaints are kept confidential.

Missing Person 3 yr old Missing After Drowning

GREENVILLE – A boy’s fishing trip with his parents turned tragic Monday evening when he fell in the water and didn’t surface.

A Hunt County dive team was summoned to the reservoir north of Greenville around 5:45 p.m. after the parents of three-year-old Letaro “E.M.” Micky reported him missing.

His father said his son slipped away for just a moment and fell in the water. The dad jumped in to find his son, but only felt his foot.

The boy’s slipper came off in his hand, he said, but he couldn’t get E.M. out of the water.

A Hunt County EMS dive team quickly began a search at Greenville Reservoir Number Four, adjacent to a city-owned power plant. But the generating station’s pumps were on, causing a strong current in the water.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Greenville Fire Chief Doug Caison worried that the boy’s body may have floated through a tunnel and into another part of the reservoir.

“At first I thought this was a call about a fisherman, a grown man,” Caison said. “That’s bad enough. But when you find out its a three-year-old, it’s the worst case scenario.”

He said teams would continue to search, despite the darkness.

It had already been a deadly weekend on North Texas waterways, with three deaths at Joe Pool Lake and a fourth at Lewisville Lake.

Pedophile Tracking Convicted Pedophile Molests Again

KITCHENER — A Kitchener man who was jailed five years ago for sexually abusing boys is back in court for molesting two more boys — including one who was about three years old.

Daniel Magda, 37, pleaded guilty Monday to seven charges and not guilty to 10 charges in Kitchener’s Ontario Court.

He admitted sexually assaulting the two boys and making child pornography. But he is disputing the number of times and dates of some of the other allegations, so a trial is being held on those.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

One of his victims, now 11, is scheduled to testify today from a separate room by closed circuit TV.

In court for the proceedings were the three males Magda abused in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Their parents were livid after a judge sentenced Magda in August 2007 to two years less a day in jail.

The Crown had asked for a five-year penitentiary term.

“We all agreed if it ever happened again we were all coming back,” said Debbie Farrow, the mother of Darcy Crocker, who was 14 when Magda sexually assaulted and choked him in 2004.

“We’re hoping he’ll get a sentence he deserves this time.”

Crocker, now 23, said he was “breathless” when he heard of the latest allegations against Magda.

“I just didn’t think it could happen again,” he said outside the courthouse. “I thought maybe he might have learned a bit of a lesson.”

Crocker is the only one of Magda’s victims whose name can be published because in 2006 he asked a judge to waive the usual publication ban placed on the identities of sexual assault victims.

The names of the current victims are under a court-ordered ban.

Although Magda was sentenced to two years less a day in August 2007, he was released early by the parole board after “about eight months” for good behaviour, his lawyer Bruce Ritter, said.

Magda is alleged to have abused the two boys between April 2008 and June 2011, although his lawyer will challenge those dates.

The court watched video of alleged sexual assaults on the boys that were made on a digital camera.

Police began investigating Magda after a relative of one of the boys brought a camera and several camera memory cards, containing the videos, to the police station.

Police searched two homes where it’s alleged Magda abused the boys.

In the bedroom of the boy who was about three years old, they found things that appeared in one of the pornographic videos — a little white bed with a toy box at the foot of the bed, dinosaurs on the wall, and the Barney children’s video series.

Two of the children’s movies seen in the videos were Waiting for Santa and What a Wonderful Day.

Magda was a youth counsellor with the YMCA before his convictions in 2006.

He has admitted making the videos and sexually assaulting the boys but doesn’t agree that he anally penetrated both boys.

Although he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the youngest boy, his lawyer said that he doesn’t recall doing so “due to drug use.”

Magda was heavily using crystal

methamphetamine at the time, court

heard.

He is also charged with threatening to kill the older boy and several of his relatives.

Ryan Hardie, an ex-con who met Magda in jail and lived with him for several months, testified Magda told him he was in jail for a bad assault on someone who picked a fight with him at a bar.

Mary Mayberry, who ran an emissions testing shop in Kitchener in early 2010, hired Magda, who was trying to start an auto-glass business, to put in windshields for customers.

She distanced herself from Magda after he talked about using cocaine and said he wanted her husband to try it.

Three more days have been scheduled for the trial.

Electronic Surveillance Captures Desperate Thief

It was a brazen armed robbery committed in full view of surveillance cameras.

A mild-mannered owner of a nail salon supply warehouse in southeast Albuquerque was held up at gunpoint by a guy who would stop at nothing to get what he wanted, even with the cameras rolling.

“When I called the cops…they said I look so green, so scared,” said Ryan Le, owner of Nails Depot.

Le said he is so traumatized by being held up at gunpoint that he can barely even sit at his desk anymore.

http://liarcatchers.com/electronic_surveillance.html

“First the time in my life, really scary, someone pointing a gun at my head,” Le said.

On Saturday afternoon, an armed bandit, in full view of surveillance cameras, busted into the warehouse where Le said he was watching a soccer game while waiting for clients to pick up their nail supplies.

“I told him that we have all the cameras here so you better just get out of here because you’re gonna be in trouble…we record everything here,” Le said. “He said he don’t care because he is not from here.”

Within seconds, Le emptied out his wallet but it still was not enough cash for the thief. “He wanted me to take him to ATM. I said, ‘No, I cannot go with you,’.”

In the surveillance video, the two are also seen walking outside together. Le said he actually handed the suspect his car keys and told him to go drive himself to the ATM if that’s what he wanted.

“At that time, I remembered I still have some money in my car so he took that money and left,” Le said.

The thief simply walked off.

Le, on the other hand, is now a few dollars short, physically unharmed but emotionally distraught over why anyone could be so desperate.

“He’s so bold, I think he really, really needed the money,” Le said.

In the seven years Le has owned Nails Depot, he said he has been burglarized twice despite having surveillance cameras, but added that he will no longer keep his door wide open, even during business hours.

Wrongful Death Harry Smith of Chillicothe

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio —

Investigators have ruled the death of a man who was found dead inside his burning home last fall as a homicide.

The fire occurred on October 16, 2011 at the home of Harry Smith on state Route 772 south of Chillicothe.

The Ross County coroner’s office said Smith was found inside the home with injuries to his head, and that several fires had been set in the home.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

The coroner ruled that the cause of death was blunt force trauma, and the manner of death was a homicide.

“Over the past eight months, we have worked diligently to do the right thing, to get everything right so that law enforcement has the best possible chance to bring those who committed this crime to justice,” said Ross County Coroner John Gabis, M.D.

But Jerry Smith, Harry’s son said, “We are very frustrated. That’s why we ended up hiring private investigators.”

When asked if there were delayed gathering the evidence, chief investigator for the Ross County coroner Mike Ratliff said, “I really can’t speak to that. The case was coordinated between the Ross County Sheriff’s office, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the State Fire Marshal’s office sharing information. Smith’s case has never been on the backburner and has been investigated since day one.

“We understand this has been a very difficult time for [the family.] We are sorry our investigation and the manner it had to be done added to their frustration and stress,” Ratliff said.

“We’ve never been called by officials and said we are working on it,” said Jerry Smith. “We’ve just basically been left in the dark.”

Smith said he learned his father’s case was declared a homicide through the media.

“Harry Smith was bound, struck in the head, robbed of personal items and his residence was then set on fire,” he said.

The investigation is now in the hands of the Ross County Sheriff’s Office.

Pedophile Tracking Texas Father Kills Pedophile

How far would you go to protect one of your children from a sex offender?

Just this week, A Texas man flew into a murderous rage when he caught a pedophile red handed with his four-year-old daughter.

The father’s name has not been released to protect the young victim’s identity. Authorities in Lavaca County, Texas, allege that he beat a 47-year-old pedophile (identified only as “Gonzales”) to death after he discovered the middle-aged sex offender on top of his daughter in a barn.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

According to the police report, the father heard his daughter screaming from inside the family’s barn. When he went to investigate, he discovered Gonzales assaulting her. After pulling Gonzales off of the little girl, the father struck the pedophile over the head several times until Gonzales lost consciousness. According to Sheriff Micah Harmon (pictured above left), the man died at the scene.

The daughter, however, was taken to DeTar Hospital in Victoria, Texas, for evaluation.

The father has not been arrested for the murder of Gonzales; friends and relatives from his small Lavaca County Township have rallied around him for support. Friend and neighbor Mark Harabis said of the crime, “I agree with him totally. I would probably do worse. The family will have to deal with that the rest of their lives, no matter what happens to the father. Even if they let him go, he and his child will have to deal with that the rest of their lives.”

Missing Person Sandra LeMire

The disappearance of a diabetic woman missing for more than a month has been upgraded to suspicious, Florida police said today.

“This is still a missing person,” Orlando police Sgt. Vincent Ogburn said. “But, usually, within a month, the person is located or someone would have seen her vehicle.

On May 8 at around 9 p.m., Sandra LeMire, 47, told her grandmother, Pauline Varner, she was going to a McDonald’s in Kissimmee, Fla., to meet a man she had been in contact with online.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Usually, Varner said, LeMire would have her dates at Varner’s home, where she lived, so that her grandmother would be close by.

But this time was different. The man Sandra was meeting worked at McDonald’s. She made plans to meet at his workplace, talk a little over coffee, and come home, Varner said.

Varner let LeMire borrow her car, a 1994 red Ford Freestar, so she could be on her way.

LeMire called her grandmother when she arrived, “like she always does,” to tell her she had gotten there. She told her, “I will call you before I start back home.”

But that call never came, Varner said. LeMire has not been seen since.

Robert Varner, LeMire’s father, said “there’s a good possibility that they [police] believe she’s still alive, so we have hope about that. We want some kind of closure, no matter what. If it’s bad news or good news.”

Police spokesman Ogburn said the department has been unable to verify that LeMire was last seen at the Kissimmee McDonald’s where she had her date. But the man with whom she met there is not a person of interest in LeMire’s disappearance, and “his story has been validated and verified,” he said.

Pauline Varner said, “All they know from the cameras is that they did have their coffee. It was about a half-hour. Then, he went back to work, she went to the car.”

Varner is concerned because LeMire is diabetic and left home without her medical supplies.

Ogburn said the Orlando Police deem the incident suspicious in nature because there have been no sightings of LeMire or the van since her disappearance.

“Oftentimes, we have people who just leave,” he said. “They don’t want to be recovered by her family, they don’t want to be found.”

Sandra’s uncle, James Varner, believes this is not the case with his niece.

“I know she wouldn’t do this,” he said. “It’s so many different things it could be. She had been told by her father that this Internet business, meeting people isn’t a good idea, it’s dangerous. But when you’re 47 years old, you’re going to do what you’re going to do. Lonely hearts, you know?”

LeMire’s father said his daughter was a pleasant, easy-going person. She had moved to Florida from Michigan three years earlier to take care of her grandmother after a series of surgeries.

He said that when she dated, most of the time, she met people online. But she was not naïve.

“People had to prove to her that she could trust them,” he said. “She had some kind of sixth sense about meeting people. Whether they could be friends or whatever.”

Crimeline is offering a $5,000 reward for any information about LeMire or her vehicle, Ogburn said

LeMire is 5 feet 4 inches tall with blonde hair. She weighs about 130 pounds. The vehicle she was driving has a Florida license tag J36-8ZE.

If anyone knows of her whereabouts, call Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS.

Electronic Surveillance Video Shows Attackers of 86 year old Chicago man

The 86-year-old Chicago man is lucky to be alive.

On April 3, an unidentified man was followed by two other men from a Currency Exchange, bank and Target store to the apartment building where he lived in the city’s Woodlawn neighborhood. The two men proceeded to choked, beat and robbed the elderly resident in the building’s lobby, ABC Chicago reports.

http://liarcatchers.com/electronic_surveillance.html

“I’m thinking, I’m being robbed. But I didn’t feel a knife or a bullet going off. I blanked out,” the man, a World War II veteran, told CBS Chicago of the attack. “And the next thing I knew, I’m coming to on the floor.”

The attackers robbed the man of $500 they had watched the man put in his sock after withdrawing it from the bank earlier that day, according to the station.

Chicago police spokesman John Mirabelli told ABC “this is one of those crimes that hits us in the pit of the stomach.” Police are hoping the released surveillance video of the attackers will help them nab the attackers. Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for any information that leads to their arrest.

The attackers are described as black men, one between 30 and 40 years old with a thin build and the other between 40 and 50 years old with a heavy build. They are both between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-11.
