Identity Theft Kevin Martin Admits Role in $2m Scheme

A St. Paul man has admitted to being part of group from the Twin Cities whose identity theft, bank fraud and money laundering activities covered more than a dozen states and earned the suspects at least $2 million.

Kevin T. Martin, 45, pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court in St. Paul to conspiracy to commit bank fraud and aggravated identity theft for his role in the ring that victimized hundreds of people, along with stores and banks, from 2006 through December 2011.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Martin faces up to 30 years in prison on the bank fraud count and a minimum of two years in prison on the identity theft charge.

In court Wednesday, Martin admitted that he and others used stolen driver’s license and bank account numbers from hundreds of unsuspecting individuals to create counterfeit checks and fraudulent identification documents. They would pilfer financial information and identities from cars, businesses, trash cans and mail boxes, and obtained some information from bank employees.

Martin admitted that the checks were passed at stores to buy expensive merchandise that was subsequently returned for cash. The counterfeit checks were also passed at banks, where Martin and the others deposited the checks into victims’ accounts and then made withdrawals from those same accounts.

Some of the counterfeit checks were drawn on accounts at U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo, American Bank of St. Paul, Affinity Plus Credit Union, Healtheast Employees Credit Union, Unity One Credit Union and Western Bank.

Ten other individuals have previously pleaded guilty to their roles in the fraud. On Sept. 29, 2011, Lee Vang, 32, of St. Paul, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering and aggravated identity theft. She admitted using bogus checks to buy items at stores in Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota and Illinois. The goods were returned for cash, and the proceeds were split among Vang and her cohorts.

On July 20, 2011, Brianna M. Darwin, 26, of St. Paul, pleaded guilty to the same counts. Melissa J. Beaman, 36, of St. Louis Park; Majorie M. Neely, 50, of Minneapolis; Frances E. Jones, 41, recently of Superior, Wis.; Christeena J. Barker, 45, of Coon Rapids; Jamie H. Branson, 45, of St. Paul; Darryl A. Bryant, 54, of St. Paul; Jacqueline Cleveland, 54, of Bloomington; and Ginger L. Halliburton, 45, of North St. Paul, have each pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud and aggravated identity theft. Patricia G. Pnewski, 51, of South St. Paul, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud.

Steven Maxwell, 44, of St. Paul; Russell Royals, 60, of Minneapolis; Desmon Burks, 37, of St. Paul; and Donyea Collins, 27, of St. Paul, have pleaded not guilty to their charges and are awaiting trial in August.

As a group, the defendants have prior convictions ranging from theft by swindle to identity theft, assault, drugs, forgeries and receiving stolen property.

Private Detective Searching for Yasir Said, Man Accused of Killing Daughters

An alleged killer may be at the wheel of a New York City taxi cab.

A private eye searching for Yasir Said, a Texas man accused of gunning down his teenage daughters for dating non-Muslim boys, says he suspects the fugitive is driving a hack.

“It’s all he knows and I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if he’s there working as a taxi driver,” Bill Warner told FOX News. “He could blend in at a metropolis like New York.”

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

An Egyptian immigrant, Said was placed on the FBI’s most-wanted list after the alleged “honor killing” of daughters Amina, 18, and Sarah Said, 17, on New Year’s Day in 2008.

They were found slain in a cab that Said had borrowed.

Warner, who works for Said’s sister-in-law, said the suspected double murderer fled Dallas with his passport and $9,000 — but doesn’t believe he left the country.

It’s more likely Said sought shelter with his brothers and other relatives who live in New York, he said.

“The brothers are really tight, so it’s likely they assisted him in some way,” said Warner, who says he found a post office box in Westchester County under the names of Said and his brother.

While the Taxi and Limousine Commission requires criminal background checks for anyone applying for a hack license, Said could easily rent a licensed car under the table, Fernando Mateo, president of the New York State Foundation of Taxi Drivers, told FOX News.

“There are 10,000 illegal drivers in New York City,” he said. “It’s as easy as getting in your car and driving to the airport or picking up illegal street hails.”

The FBI has so far declined to discuss their search for Said or weigh in on Warner’s suspicions.

Said, believed to be either 50 or 55, is described as 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, with a mustache and dark sunglasses that he wears both indoors and out. He smokes Marlboro Light 100 cigarettes and likes to nosh at Denny’s and I-Hop restaurants.

“Additionally, Said is known to carry a handgun in his taxi cab at all times,” the poster warns. “It has also been reported that Said always carries a weapon with him, to include knives.”

There have been several reported honor killings in recent years among Muslim immigrants who feared their daughters or wives were becoming too “Americanized.”

Three years ago, the Pakistani-born founder of a Muslim-oriented Buffalo TV station beheaded his wife after she served him with divorce papers.

Experts, however, say the horrific practice has nothing to do with Islam. Rather, it is rooted in the conservative tribal societies from which murder suspects like Said emerged.

Insurance Fraud Bruce Jones Wanted

ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) – An Indiana psychologist is wanted on allegations of health insurance fraud and illegal weapons possession, and U.S. Marshals are on the hunt for him in the Pacific Northwest, 24-Hour News 8 news partner The Herald Bulletin reports .

The newspaper reports Bruce E. Jones, 64, a psychologist who offers counseling out of his Anderso home, is accused of fraudulently billed at least two health care benefit programs more than $100,000 for counseling services that he did not actually provide, according to a federal grand jury indictment made earlier this month.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

The indictment also alleges Jones had in his possession more than two dozen firearms, including rifles and handguns, and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, the newspaper reports.

Jones, who U.S. Attorney Joseph Hogsett’s office said is considered a fugitive, served time in prison in the 1980s for insurance fraud and selling drugs. He is barred from possessing firearms and ammunition because of those convictions, the newspaper reports.

Wrongful Death Women Found in Trashcan

Police are having difficulty identifying a body discovered in a trashcan left on the road in a rural area of Pleasanton last week, a Pleasanton police lieutenant said Wednesday.

The body of a woman was discovered around 11:30 a.m. May 24 in the 11000 block of Dublin Canyon Road, police said.

The Alameda County coroner’s bureau is still working to identify the body found in the garbage bin, Lt. Jeff Bretzing said.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Fingerprints have not revealed anything, Bretzing said.

The woman did have some distinct features, according to Bretzing, including dark hair and blue polish on her fingernails.

She was wearing pajama bottoms and an Old Navy brand shirt, Bretzing said.

The lieutenant said police hope to create a sketch of the woman in the next few days to distribute to the public to help identify her.

Anyone with information about the case has been asked to call Pleasanton police at (925) 931-5100.

Fraud Investigation Colorado Insurance Commission

Denver, Colo. —

A possible scam surfaced yesterday targeting Colorado consumers. The Colorado Division of Insurance warns consumers never to give out personal banking information over the phone.

Here’s the setup: a caller claims to be a representative of the “Colorado Insurance Commission.” The caller says the state has taken over the consumer’s insurance company.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

The caller claims the state sent the consumer a check for $399 to refund copays, but the check was returned by the U.S. Post Office. The caller then says he can direct deposit the check into the consumer’s banking account if the consumer would provide account information.

The Division wants consumers to know that Division representatives never ask consumers for banking information, nor does anyone identify himself or herself as being with the “Colorado Insurance Commission.” There is no such entity; the office is known as the Colorado Division of Insurance and is part of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies. If you believe you may be the victim of a scam, please contact your local law enforcement.

Drug Dog Sweep Christopher Brown Charged

STAMFORD — A shoddy parking job at Fairway Market led police dogs to discover several bags of heroin in the car of a 24-year-old city man Tuesday evening, police said.

Christopher Brown, of 40 Stillwater Ave., Stamford, was charged at 9:30 p.m. with several narcotics and motor vehicle offenses because of the poor parking attempt, according to Stamford police Sgt. Robert Shawinsky. He was released after posting $10,000 bail.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

Brown came to the attention of police officers on patrol in the South End when they spotted a car taking up two handicapped parking spaces in the parking lot off Canal Street, police said. The car did not have a handicapped parking sticker, and when officers questioned the owner, later identified as Brown, they learned out he had a suspended drivers’ license.

Officers searched Brown in the parking lot and allegedly found six bags of marijuana on him. While searching the car, the officers also found a bag of crack cocaine on the floor in the back seat area, Shawinsky said.

The officers requested a drug-sniffing dog, and it located 19 bags of heroin under the center console arm rest, Shawinsky said.

Brown was charged with possession of narcotics, sale of certain illegal drugs, possession of a controlled substance, sale of a controlled substance, driving with a suspended license and improper use of a handicapped parking facility.

Brown is due in court June 12.

Missing Person Spencer Loper

YUBA COUNTY, CA – Searchers with the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department will be out again Wednesday at Camp Far West campground looking for a missing person.

Sheriff’s Lt. Damon Gil said they’re looking for Spencer Loper. He was with a group at the campground early Sunday morning. His friends say when they woke up later, Loper wasn’t there and he hasn’t been seen since.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Gil said searchers combed the campground and were looking on the Camp Far West Reservoir (lake) Tuesday. Wednesday they hope for air support in their search as they check the shoreline both on foot and in the water.

No description of Loper was available as of posting.

It was earlier this month that Sacramento Fire Department engineer Bill Porter drowned in the reservoir. His body was found near a boat ramp after several days of looking. The boat ramp is where the search for Loper will start Wednesday, according to Gil.

Private Detective Ronald Poppo Victim of Face Eating

IAMI – Police in Florida have named 65-year-old Ronald Poppo as the homeless victim whose face was chewed and destroyed by Rudy Eugene along a busy Miami highway ramp.

Miami police said little Tuesday about the attack, which took place Saturday afternoon in the shadow of The Miami Herald headquarters. Surveillance video from the newspaper’s security camera showed cars, motorcycles, pedestrians and bicyclists passing by.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

“He had his face eaten down to his goatee. The forehead was just bone. No nose, no mouth,” said Sgt. Armando Aguilar, president of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police. “In my opinion, he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Sgt. Javier Ortiz, vice president of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police, said it was one of the bloodiest “and goriest scenes I’ve ever been to.”

It’s not clear what led Eugene, 31, to attack Poppo. CBS Miami reports that Eugene may have been under the influence of an LSD-like drug called “bath salts,” according to Aguilar.

Witness Larry Vega was riding his bicycle off the causeway, which connects downtown Miami with Miami Beach, when he saw the attack.

“The guy was, like, tearing him to pieces with his mouth, so I told him, ‘Get off!'” Vega told Miami television station WSVN. “The guy just kept eating the other guy away, like, ripping his skin.”

Vega flagged down the Miami police officer, who can be seen exiting his car on the Herald video. Vega said the officer repeatedly ordered the attacker to get off. Eugene just picked his head up and growled at the officer before continuing to maul his victim, Vega said. The officer shot Eugene, but he just kept chewing, Vega said. The officer fired again, killing Eugene.

Detective William Moreno would not release details about the shooting, citing the ongoing investigation. The Miami-Dade County medical examiner declined to provide any information until after the autopsy, which was scheduled for Tuesday. Police have not released details from the autopsy and it could be weeks before the results of toxicology tests are available.

Officials say Poppo, who lived under the causeway, is still in critical condition.

Wrongful Death Julie Reese Pleads Guilty for Killing Goddaughter

A Lexington woman charged in the death of her goddaughter back in 2011 pleaded guilty in the case Wednesday.

A grand jury indicted Julie Reese for reckless homicide in the death of her 12-year-old goddaughter, Sierra Hubbard. The incident happened back in June 2011, outside Northern Elementary School. The coroner says Hubbard was walking next to the van and fell. Officials say a rear wheel ran over the child.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

On Wednesday, Reese plead guilty to reckless homicide. Prosecutors oppose probation in the case and recommend Reese serve two years in prison.

Police say toxicology results show Reese had marijuana in her system at the time of the incident.

Formal sentencing in the case is set for July 9.
