Identity Theft Police Stumple upon Suspect

DALLAS –

Police on Monday stumbled upon hundreds of stolen credit cards and social security numbers.

Sources said the bust was somewhat accidental. A suspect used a bogus credit card to rent a car from an Oklahoma-based rental company. The company then tracked the car to the Hyatt Regency in downtown Dallas.

Cops called to make the arrest found credit cards, social security numbers and files from a major federal agency inside the room in plain sight. Drugs including methamphetamine and marijuana were also found.

Sources said it is likely someone from the undisclosed federal agency was supplying the suspect with information to make the bad cards.

Police confiscated a laptop, equipment and other evidence. They arrested the young man and young woman who were inside the room at the time, but it is still unclear how they are connected to what sources said appears to be an identity theft operation.

Fraud Investigation Man Dresses Up as Dead Mom

Perhaps it was the hands — too big for the apparently frail woman in the poofy blonde wig. Perhaps it was the dubious expression on the face of the temporary home health aid. But the video that was supposed to help Thomas Parkin prove his elderly mother was alive only sent a Brooklyn, N.Y., jury into giggles, and Parkin now faces at least 13 years in prison for donning the strange disguise in a scheme to reap his dead mom’s riches.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

If he gets out after serving the minimum of 13-2/3 to 41 years handed down Monday, Parkin, 51, still will be younger than the mother, Irene Prusik, whom he posed as for six years. A judge announced the punishment two weeks after a jury convicted Parkin of grand larceny and mortgage fraud that allegedly began in 2003.

That’s when Prusik, who was 73, died, leaving behind a brownstone in the upscale Brooklyn neighborhood of Park Slope that was valued at about $2.2 million. Prosecutors said Parkin could not afford to maintain payments on the building, so he came up with the plan to dress as his mother, convince others she was still alive and begin cashing her Social Security checks and laying claim to the building.

A codefendant, Mhilton Rimolo, 49, who pretended to be a relative, was arrested in 2010 and charged with grand larceny. He was sentenced to three years in prison.

Parkin never denied dressing as his mother, but he insisted he was doing nothing wrong by living life as a seventysomething woman with a walker, oversized dark glasses and a bad wig. Prosecutors, though, showed jurors videos and photographs that they said proved Parkin was hiding behind his disguise to renew his mother’s driver’s license; cash tens of thousands of dollars in Social Security and other checks; and doctor her death certificate. Rimolo appears in some of the videos, standing alongside the person prosecutors identified as Parkin.

Investigators had been suspicious of Parkin for a while but got their big break in March 2009 when he and Rimolo walked into the Brooklyn district attorney’s office to claim that the new owners of mother’s home — which had fallen into foreclosure — were there illegally. They claimed Prusik was still alive and wanted to sue.

“To the investigators’ surprise, Rimolo and Parkin agreed to arrange a meeting with Prusik at the home,” according to a statement from the DA’s office issued after the May 3 conviction. “When investigators arrived, they found Parkin dressed as his … mother, wearing a red cardigan, lipstick, manicured nails and breathing through an oxygen tank.”
According to prosecutors, Parkin got off relatively easy. He could have received up to 83 years in prison.

Process Server was Ran Over

GALVESTON – A Webster woman alleges she was run over near a local high school two years ago, recent court documents say.

A lawsuit filed May 14 in Galveston County District Court says Ann Marie Whitmore, a certified civil process server, attempted to deliver legal documents to Dickinson resident Dalia Camargo Ramirez on May 17, 2010, when Ramirez struck the her with a silver Dodge Caravan.

http://liarcatchers.com/process_service.html

Whitmore followed the defendant all the way to Dickinson High School prior to the alleged incident.

“When Dalia Camargo Ramirez stopped to let her children out of her vehicle, Ann Marie Whitmore approached to deliver process, and Dalia Camargo Ramirez accelerated at a high rate of speed before Ann Marie Whitmore could deliver the documents,” the suit says.

The original petition further explains that the plaintiff noticed there was a circle drive and Ramirez would have to drive back past her to leave the school parking lot.

Whitmore then stood in the marked crosswalk in order to get Ramirez’s attention.

“Dalia Camargo Ramirez slowed down and appeared as though she was going to stop and Ann Marie Whitmore stepped further out into the crosswalk,” the suit says.

“Dalia Camargo Ramirez then accelerated while Ann Marie Whitmore was in the crosswalk, striking Ann Marie Whitmore and knocking her to the ground and running the back tires of the vehicle over Ann Marie Whitmore’s hand.”

According to the complainant, Ramirez stopped the vehicle, but fled the scene before police were summoned.

James Michael Ramirez is a co-defendant in the case because he is the presumed owner of the Caravan reportedly involved in the event in question.

The complainant consequently seeks unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.

Attorney John H. Weigel of Webster is representing Whitmore.

Galveston County 56th District Court Judge Lonnie Cox is presiding over the case.

Insurance Fraud and Arson Charges for Hornell Woman

A Hornell woman faces arson and insurance fraud charges stemming from an investigation of a Christmas Eve fire at her Hammondsport home.

Jaqueline D. Rohalla, 70, is charged third-degree arson, second-degree insurance fraud, second-degree forgery and second-degree reckless endangerment, according to New York State Police.

New York State Police in Bath, working in conjunction with the New York State Department of Financial Services Criminal Investigations, allege that Rohalla set fire to her Hammondsport residence in an effort to collect insurance money.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

The fire was discovered by a rural mail carrier mid-day on Christmas Eve, according to a press release. Hammondsport volunteer firefighters were called, but the residence was destroyed.

Fire investigators were unable to determine a cause of the fire, according to state police. However, state Financial Services and Bath-based state police investigators began an investigation after Rohalla made several insurance claims. The police investigation alleges Rohalla made false claims relating to where she was living for several weeks following the fire and that she intentionally started the fire.

Rohalla was arraigned before town of Avoca Justice Patrick McMahon. She was released on her own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Pedophile Tracking Robert Hedrick

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Jurors convicted the founder of a Texas cargo airline on child pornography charges Monday, siding with prosecutors who said he had explicit online chats with undercover officers posing as young teenage girls and collected numerous illegal images.

Robert L. Hedrick, who founded Pan American Airways, was found guilty of distribution and possession of child pornography, transfer of obscene materials to a minor, and attempted sexual exploitation of children. He spoke quietly with his lawyers after the verdict was read, but otherwise showed no reaction.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

He could get up to 20 years in prison on just one count of distributing child pornography when sentenced on Aug. 27.

Federal authorities arrested the 61-year-old last summer after undercover detectives in Wisconsin and Louisiana traced the sexually explicit chat-room exchanges from an online account registered to Hedrick. Investigators said they later found 2,400 pornographic images saved on three hard drives in his home.

After leaving the court, defense attorney Ed Stapleton said Hedrick has always maintained his innocence.

“Just as a matter of principle he was not willing to plead guilty,” Stapleton said. “If he had pleaded guilty, because of his age, he would have died in prison. At least this way he’ll have an appeal.”

In their closing remarks earlier Monday, prosecutors reviewed evidence tying Hedrick to the chats with undercover officers posing online as 13 and 14-year old girls. Defense attorneys denied it was Hedrick at the keyboard, trying to use the Internet’s thin veil of anonymity to raise doubts among jurors, and claimed he had a long list of enemies with the motivation and money to set him up.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Violet LaTawn Warsaw told jurors that Hedrick’s ultimate goal was to convince teenage girls to send him nude photographs of themselves. To that end, he searched for them in Internet chat rooms, began conversations that quickly turned sexually explicit and sent them pornography.

“It was persistent. It was unrelenting. It was constant,” Warsaw told jurors.

Warsaw reminded jurors of a video of Hedrick masturbating. Government officials testified that is was live-streaming video during a chat with an undercover police detective in Louisiana. But Hedrick, while admitting that it was him, said it was a video he made for his wife during marriage counseling. There was also a recorded phone conversation between that same detective and a man who prosecutors said was Hedrick. Hedrick acknowledged that the voice sounded like his.

But Stapleton told jurors that prosecutors failed to prove his client’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Defense lawyers claimed that Hedrick had many enemies thanks to his business dealings and personal life who had the motivation and the means to set him up. Stapleton said the government failed to investigate other possible suspects.

Stapleton urged jurors to begin their deliberations with a presumption of innocence, acknowledging that the graphic nature of the evidence made it difficult to think “without prejudice or sympathy.”

“Once you have seen the pictures, your mind can shut down,” he warned.

“The question is not whether a crime was committed. There’s ample evidence that a crime was committed,” Stapleton added, but noted that no one ever saw Hedrick engaging in the online chats and argued it could have been someone else.

Warsaw returned to testimony from Hedrick’s Internet provider and technical specialists that matched the times of the chats with logins from Hedrick’s account and its Internet address. His cellphone recorded the number of the undercover detective in Louisiana who called him at his request.

“All of the evidence in this case points to one person,” Warsaw said. “That one person is Mr. Hedrick.”

Identity Theft 3 Inmates Charged

Three Johnson County Jail inmates are accused of accessing another inmate’s phone account to make nearly $60 in phone calls.

According to Johnson County Sheriff’s Office criminal complaints, Dantrel L. Ware, 19, of Iowa City and Leslie K. Stokes, Jr., 19, of Cedar Rapids, obtained the personal identification number of another inmate without his permission. The PIN is used by jail inmates to control funds for their commissary and phone accounts.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Police said Ware used the victim’s PIN to make 18 phone calls in two days. Stokes allegedly made 19 phone calls in two days. Both men were observed on surveillance video using the only phone in the cell block when the victim’s account was accessed, police said.

The estimated amount of money used by the two men was between $40-50, according to the complaint. The phone calls took place on or around May 16.

On May 18, a third inmate, Marzell L. Hicks, 35, of Chicago, also accessed the inmate’s phone account. Police said Hicks made three phone calls totaling $9.36 on that day.

All three men now face charges of identity theft, an aggravated misdemeanor

Missing Person Mickey Shunick

Still no sign of 21-year-old Mickey Shunick.

She was last seen at around 2 o’clock Saturday morning when she left a friend’s house in the Saint Streets area.
She was on her bike headed home to the area of Ambassador Caffery and West Congress, but she never made it home.

Mickey missed her brother’s high school graduation Saturday, no one has been able to get in touch with her ever since.

liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Sunday, family and friends organized a search party, looking for clues and now a private donor is offering a ten thousand dollar reward for any information leading to the whereabouts of Mickey Shunick, no questions asked.
That donor is also hiring a private investigator, hoping to get answers to many unanswered questions.

Nearly one hundred people gathered on Ryan Drive where Mickey was last seen to canvas the area once again.
Family and friends knocking on doors, retracing Mickey’s steps, and posting fliers.

“It doesn’t take much of being around her to know how she is, how comfortable she is around other people, and how excited she is about life and everything that is going on. Something is clearly unusual with the circumstances,” said search party organizer Brettly Wilson.

Although family and friends have canvassed this large area already near Cajun Field, they are searching areas such as drainage canals again for the slightest clue as to where Mickey could be.

“Mickey doesn’t stay at other people’s houses, Mickey doesn’t have boyfriends, Mickey doesn’t have people that are mad at her. Your usual suspects here really aren’t going on. She really would have just been going home,” said Wilson.

Family and friends are trying to keep their hopes up, but with each passing hour, that becomes more and more difficult.

“I don’t think you realize what a special person this is and how many people she has touched, and what you’ve done. We just want her back. We want her safe. We want our friend.”

Posters with her picture are posted throughout the area. Her friends and family ask if you’ve seen her or may have seen anything that might have been suspicious to please call Lafayette Police.

While the search party was ongoing Sunday, several neighbors did file police reports with Lafayette Police, saying they did see suspicious activity in the area.

The Lafayette Police Department have launched a missing persons case.

If you’re interested in joining the search for Mickey, family and friends are looking for volunteers.

E-mail: findmickeyshunick@yahoo.com or call Mickey’s mother Nancy, (337)277-2751.
