Missing Person Manuel Mariaca

After searching for more than 12 hours today, police and sheriff’s deputies have suspended their search for 35-year-old Manuel Mariaca.

Investigators say he was last seen by a neighbor Sunday afternoon in the area of Anderson and Southwest Parkway in South College Station.

The Brazos County Sheriff’s Department dragged a pond looking for Mariaca. The pond is at Andy Anderson Arboretum near Bee Creek Park in South College Station. Investigators, along with search dogs, scoured through the wooded area in Bee Creek Park as well.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Police say the search has been concentrated around the park because they found Mariaca’s personal belongings there. No further details were given on what was found.

Investigators say Mariaca’s family reported him missing Monday evening.

“They had not had contact with him in more than 24 hours. Very unusual for him. He has a very close circle of friends and family. He doesn’t know a lot of people here in town, and so they were very concerned for his safety,” said Officer Rhonda Seaton with the College Station Police Department.

Some residents who live near Mariaca’s residence on Anderson Street got an unexpected knock on their door from investigators who were searching for answers.

“It is very shocking knowing that someone that lives right across the street went missing like that and not knowing how they went missing. I have kids so I’m shocked,” said Michelda Rodgers who lives near Mariaca’s residence.

The Criminal Investigation Division will continue looking into the case, but police have suspended their search.

Investigators say Mariaca was last seen Sunday afternoon wearing a white shirt. He is Hispanic, 5 feet 3 inches tall and about 120 pounds.
If you have any information, please call College Station Police at 764-3600.

Drug Dog Purchased with Drug Money

The newest Wichita Falls police officer Turko, the drug dog, started work today. He was purchased by the Wichita Falls Police Department with funds seized from narcotics dealers in drug busts.

It is one of the great ironies of the War on Drugs that narcotics dealers’ funds which are forfeited in drug arrests are often used to purchase drug dogs who have repeatedly proven invaluable over the years working for Wichita Falls law enforcement.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

Wichita Falls police officer Aaron New is Turko’s partner. Turko, a Belgian Malinois, is from Guadalajara, Mexico.

Turko is the latest in a long line of drug detection dogs which have served Wichita Falls in the never-ending fight against drug traffickers.

Kimbo, another Belgian Malinois, began his career on October 1, 2009, working with Wichita County Deputy Sheriff Josh Brown. Kimbo was 13 months old when he began his career alongside Deputy Brown.

Brown came to Wichita County from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office in January of 2009. He brought his K-9 partner Clif with him. When Clif tragically died he was replaced by Kimbo. Kimbo is now a part of the Brown family and he is loved very much.

Kimbo started his illustrious career with the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office fast on October 22, 2009 when he gave his partner Deputy Brown the signal he needed to search a car early that morning. Brown stopped a blue 1997 Mercury on Highway 79 at Goodman Road in the early morning hours when it failed to remain in one lane.

After the two men in the car refused consent to search, Kimbo and Brown circled the car in what Sheriff David Duke called a “free air search.”

Kimbo’s response indicated the presence of drugs in the car. The dog’s action created probable cause to search the automobile. The ensuing search revealed a digital scale, plastic bags with residue, lithium batteries three plastic buckets and other items commonly used in manufacutring illegal drugs.

At the time Sheriff Duke said the case was Kimbo’s first drug lab bust in Wichita County. The sheriff also thanked the Wichita County District Attorney’s Office for making a donation toward the funding of the K-9 program.

Operation Powder Burn, orchestrated by District Attorney Maureen Shelton in 2011, resulted in the largest drug bust in 30 years in Wichita Falls and the seizure of countless funds used by drug traffickers. Anyone wishing to report illegal drug activity should call the District Attorney’s Office at 940-766-8113. Assistant District Attorney Dobie Kosub has successfully prosecuted most of those drug cases.

Turko is the first passive response drug dog in the history of Wichita Falls law enforcement, according to a report by TV news reporter Melissa Foy. This means that he reacts to the presence of drugs by sitting. Previous drug detection dogs were all aggressive meaning they would scratch on items which contained drugs.

Turko will be the second drug dog with which the experienced Officer New has partnered in Wichita Falls.

Turko is trained to detect marihuana, methamphetamines, heroin and cocaine.

The 17-month old is like family to Officer New who said the dog is also trained in apprehension and tracking.

Private Investigator Women Forgives Her Attackers As Police Still Search

For the first time, a Winchester woman reveals how two men forced their way inside her home, tied her up and stole her valuables. Albert Jones spoke only LEX18’s Jennifer Hoff about the robbery.

Jones’ bruises are nearly healed since last week’s crime. But the 68-year-old says her mental scars are still fresh. Despite the trauma, she has a message of forgiveness for the two men police are still searching for.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

In an instant, Jones was tied-up. The bruises were caught on camera hours after she said her life changed forever.

“I was trying to keep myself calm because I was afraid I was going to have a heart attack,” said Jones.

For an hour, Jones worked to free herself from the masking tape she said two robbers tied around her arms and ankles.

“I was fearful because he told me if I moved, he was coming back and that if I moved, that he would shoot me,” said Jones.

Left by the men, Jones would flee from the back bedroom and make her way to a neighbor’s house for help. It all started when the pair came knocking on her door, asking for water, which the men said hadn’t been turned on at their new house. The second time the men showed up, they forced their way in and stole valuable coins. A week later, Jones has forgiven her attackers.

“I hate what you did, but I don’t hate you. You’ve made a mistake, but please turn yourself in before it’s too late and if you will turn yourself in, I will do my best every way I can to help you,” promised Jones.

Determined to keep a friendly disposition, Jones refuses to shut the front door of her Jackson Street house, but admits she’s more cautious around others.

“Just enjoy every precious moment that you have because you don’t know what the next moment is going to bring,” said Jones.

Jones’ boyfriend and son stop by her house often, but weren’t there when the home invasion happened in broad daylight. But she’d like to thank them for their support in the aftermath.

Jones is working with a sketch artist to help identify the two men she said she didn’t recognize. If you know anything, call Winchester Police.

Identity Theft Marque Harris Arrested

Police arrested a 32 year-old Bridgeport man for his alleged involvement in scamming at least one person by using an identity theft scheme, police said. Marque Harris, of Poplar Street in Bridgeport, was arrested at his workplace in Shelton by Wilton Police this past Friday, May 18 and was charged with four counts of second-degree identity theft, according to the police report.

Police said that Harris had found at least one other person where “he would pay their bills by accepting cash from them and telling the person he could match their payments,” the report states.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Harris allegedly also opened a credit account under another name and rather than paying their bills, he, allegedly, “in essence pocketed the money,” said Captain John Lynch of the Wilton Police Department. Police said that Harris allegedly took banking information, probably from a check, to make unauthorized banking withdrawals from the account. Police are still investigating the incident, and indicated there were more victims involved. The total amount stolen was not readily available at press time (look for an update on this later).

“It’s a long case,” said Lynch. “We’re still putting [it] together.”

Harris posted a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on May 29, police said.

Pedophile Tracking Camilo Gonzalez Villegas

PHOENIX –

A 49-year-old Phoenix man has been accused of sexually abusing two young children, and has been arrested after 3 years on the run.

The investigation began in 2009. When police began investigating that case, they realized Camilo Gonzalez Villegas was a suspect in a separate sexual misconduct investigation back in 2003.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

In that case, Villegas allegedly sexually abused a 4-year-old female. At the time, Villegas denied any sexual abuse and a polygraph test was inconclusive.

In 2009, police interviewed both the recent victim and re-interviewed the 2003 victim, and they reported several sex crimes had occurred. It was then Villegas fled to Mexico, court documents allege.

In May of 2012, authorities received information that Camilo Villegas was back in the United States. He was arrested on Monday in Phoenix.

He again denied the claims, and stated the victims were coached by their parents. However, since the victims didn’t know each other and were from different years, police booked Villegas into jail.

Villegas is facing 2 counts of sexual conduct with a minor, 2 counts of molestation, and 1 count of sex abuse. He is being held without bond.

Wrongful Death Rhonda McIntosh Rogers

A Powell County man shot his ex-girlfriend and then fatally shot a bat-wielding woman trying to chase him away from another residence as he hunted for the first woman’s new boyfriend during a series of shootings Tuesday, police said.

The suspect later shot himself in the head and was airlifted to a Lexington hospital, said Kentucky State Police Trooper Endre Samu. His condition was not immediately known.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

The shootings in the town of Stanton began about 4:15 p.m. EDT on Sipple Street when Randy Derrickson argued with his former girlfriend, Lori Hall Boswell, about their breakup, Samu said.

“He just didn’t want to accept it,” the trooper said.

Derrickson, 50, allegedly shot Boswell once in the face with a .38 revolver outside her residence, Samu said.

Police tell us Boswell, in her mid-30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. However, her family tells us she is still alive on life support.

Derrickson then drove to another neighborhood in search of Boswell’s new boyfriend, who was not there at the time, Samu said.

A neighbor came outside wielding a baseball bat trying to protect the property, the trooper said.

“She’s trying to chase him off,” the trooper said.

The woman, identified as Rhonda McIntosh Rogers, was shot twice in the face and pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

Derrickson then started driving back toward Boswell’s property but was stopped at a roadblock. While stopped, Derrickson brandished his weapon toward a Stanton police officer in a vehicle in front of him.

The officer fired two shots into Derrickson’s wieldshield but the suspect was not struck, Samu said.

Derrickson then drove away at a high rate of speed headed back to Boswell’s neighborhood, where Derrickson also lives, the trooper said. Derrickson stopped short of his house, with police officers in pursuit. The suspect then shot himself in the head, Samu said.

Derrickson never fired at police. He was taken to a hospital in nearby Winchester and then was being airlifted to the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, the trooper said.

Samu said he was not aware of any protective order taken out against Derrickson. He said he didn’t know when Hall had ended her relationship with Derrickson.

Missing Person Sierra LeMar UPDATE

Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith said DNA and other evidence leads her investigators to believe missing teen Sierra LaMar is dead, and that a 21-year-old Morgan Hill man is her killer.

Antolin Garcia-Torres was booked Monday night into the county main jail on one count of murder and one count of kidnapping after being taken into custody hours earlier at a Safeway in Morgan Hill — more than two months after Sierra was last seen.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“Our investigation has led to the identification of Antolin Garcia-Torres as the person responsible for the kidnap and murder of Sierra LaMar,” Smith said at a Tuesday morning press conference. “We developed this through our investigation based on direct and circumstantial
evidence, including forensic analysis conducted by the Santa Clara County DA’s crime lab.”

But Garcia-Torres’ family quickly defended the suspect.

“It’s not him,” sister Lucero Garcia told this newspaper. She added that she knows how it sounds when the family members of criminal suspects speak up on their behalf, but “I honestly feel they don’t have enough evidence to convict him.”

Garcia spoke not long after Sierra’s mother, Marlene, issued a plea to Garcia-Torres to tell authorities what he knows about the 15-year-old’s fate. She said she still holds out hope that Sierra may be alive.

“We continue to pray until she is found,” LaMar said. “Our search is not going to end. As a mother I’m hopeful. Her body has not

been found and that gives me hope.”

Authorities, though, said they are certain she is dead and are hoping to get more information from the suspect that leads them to the body. Her mother, fighting back tears, asked Garcia-Torres to provide more information to investigators.

“I do have a plea to the perpetrator. Please give the information that you have to,” Marlene LaMar said. “Lead us to Sierra and end this nightmare. Come forward and say where she is and end this nightmare for us as a family.”

Smith said investigators initially had many suspects, but right now they believe only one person is responsible for the kidnap and murder of Sierra: Garcia-Torres.

The first deputy who responded to the March 16 missing person’s report on Sierra knew immediately she was not a runaway, Smith said. But Sierra was not taken off the missing person’s list until 10 days after her disappearance.

Two days after she was reported missing, Sierra’s bag and some clothing were found.

“It was that clothing that was really instrumental in identifying the suspect,” Smith said.

Smith said from March 28 on, Garcia-Torres was under 24-hour surveillance, hoping they would find Sierra.

“He may have believed he was under surveillance,” Smith said. “We talked to him multiple times.”

In fact, Laura Torres, Garcia-Torres’ mother, confirmed that she and her son were aware that they were being watched starting about two months ago. She said GPS devices were found under both of their cars.

Garcia-Torres called her overnight after his arrest. “He said ‘Mom, be strong. I need you strong’ ” to help take care of his wife and child.

After investigators took his Jetta, Torres said she asked her son if he had anything to do with the case. “He said ‘I’ve never seen that lady, I’ve never made contact with her.’ ”

Smith said she believes this was a stranger abduction, the “worst type of crime.”

In March 2009, there were three assaults in the Morgan Hill area. Forensic evidence leads investigators to believe Garcia-Torres committed at least one of them, Smith said.

Since January of 2011 in Santa Clara county alone there are 43 missing females that have never returned home, Smith said. She added, “you wonder” if any of those actually were abductions also.

The sheriff’s office previously announced that a red Volkswagen Jetta with a black hood might be connected to the Sierra LaMar case, and according to authorities, Garcia-Torres is the owner of the car, which was seized on May 8.

Kenneth Piccolo, a former English teacher for Antolin Garcia-Torres at Central Continuation High School, said he remembers Garcia-Torres’ Jetta.

“My car has a black hood too, and we joked about it,” Piccolo said. “You don’t put two and two together and think, that’s Antolin’s car.”

“I’m in total shock right now,” Piccolo said. “We never thought he was a criminal or a troublemaker.”

Piccolo described Garcia-Torres as “always respectful, very polite,” and a “bigger-than-life presence on campus; very social.” He didn’t graduate because he didn’t do all his work, not for lack of intelligence, he said.

Sierra disappeared while she was supposed to be on her way to a school bus stop.

The day after her disappearance, investigators found her cellphone a few blocks east of her school bus stop. And, the next day, her pink Juicy-brand bag was found, containing a neatly folded T-shirt and pants.

KTVU-2 reported that Garcia-Torres was arrested around 6 p.m. at a Safeway store on Tennant Avenue in Morgan Hill, where he once worked.

Witnesses to the arrest told the television station that sheriff’s officers took Garcia-Torres into custody at gunpoint. A broadcast showed him, clad in shorts and a tank-top with a chain connecting his wrists to his waist, being escorted away from the sheriff’s office after an interview said to have lasted three hours.

Marc Klaas, who has been organizing volunteer searches since Sierra’s disappearance, says he was given the same incomplete news after his own 12-year-old daughter, Polly, was kidnapped from their Petaluma home in 1993.

“I would say they’re very angry now,” Klaas said of the LaMar family, although he hadn’t talked to them late Monday night.

“They’ve been told somebody murdered their daughter, but they can’t prove it. That’s how I felt. They needed to prove to me one way or another before I would accept anything, until they proved to me my daughter was dead.”

After being dominated by fear and anger for the past two months, the LaMar family is now “possibly at the point where there won’t be anything left to be afraid of,” Klaas said.

Until Sierra’s body is recovered, he said, his volunteers will continue with a scheduled search Wednesday “in hopes of still finding Sierra alive.”

Monday’s arrest marks a sad turn to a case that began after the teen from the Morgan Hill area vanished on the way to school, sparking countless volunteer searches as her family and authorities scoured fields, creeks, back roads and reservoirs in hopes of finding Sierra.

Over the past two months, critical developments in the case emerged but none was revealed to be a breakthrough — until now.

Ten days after Sierra disappeared, the Sheriff’s Office took her off the missing persons list and Monday’s arrest suggested the worst.

“As difficult as it is, and as much as you want your child home and safe, you need a resolution. You need to know. There are far too many cases unsolved or cold that leave people in limbo from which they’re unable to move forward,” Klaas said.

“Imagine what it’s like,” he said, “to be told day after day that there’s no real news? You get to the point you just need news. You need to know where is my child?”

Insurance Fraud Targeting Seniors

A statewide scheme targeting more than 200 senior citizens deceived into spending thousands of dollars for home care services they never received culminated in the arrests of four Philadelphia-area men, the state Attorney General said this morning.

The fraud spread across 41 Pennsylvania counties and three other states and investigators identified at least 218 victims, including seven in Allegheny County, one in Beaver, five in Butler, two in Washington and three in Westmoreland counties. The average age of the victims was 83, Attorney General Linda Kelly said.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

“This was a disturbing and despicable scheme designed to extract as much money as possible from unwitting seniors who believed they were protecting themselves against costly future home-care expenses,” Kelly said. “These con artists left a string of more than 200 victims stretching from Philadelphia to Erie and stole more than $700,000 through the sale of contracts for bogus home care services or stolen insurance premiums.”

Officials yesterday charged Bruce Howard Cherry, 52, of Philadelphia; Ross M. Rabelow, 52, of Bucks County; Thomas J. Muldoon, 57, of Delaware County and Robert P. Lerner, 56, of Philadelphia.

The four sold contracts for services – usually home health care and medical equipment – which they never provided, according to a state grand jury investigation. In one of the worst cases, Kelly said, the defendants stole more than $57,000 from one woman during a two-year period.

Cherry, Rabelow and Muldoon are charged with one count each of participating in a corrupt organization, eight counts of theft by failure to make required disposition of funds, one count of criminal conspiracy and 218 counts each of dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity, theft by deception, insurance fraud and deceptive business practices.

Lerner is charged with two counts of theft by failure to make required disposition of funds, one count of criminal conspiracy, one count of forgery, one count of theft by receiving stolen property and three counts each of dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity, theft by deception and insurance fraud.
