Identity Theft ‘Smishing’

Have you ever been sent a text message with a link? Be careful! Identity Theft Expert and Consultant Robert Siciliano says it could be an ID theft scam known as “smishing.”

The term “smishing” refers to winning a fake prize. A link often appears in the body of an email or phone text telling you to “click here” for your prize. If you click on the infected link, it downloads malware, which compromises your device.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

If you click on the infected link, the downloaded software allows a “bad guy” to remotely control your phone — from anywhere in the world. That scammer can even use your phone to access your banking information and even monitor ambient sounds around you.

How do you avoid “smishing”? Robert says:

1) Protect your cell phone and computer with anti-malware products, such as McAfee

2) Avoid clicking on links you are not familiar with.

On “Anderson,” Robert shares the top 10 identity theft scams to watch out for. Along with “smishing” another top scam is disguised phone calls.

A “bad guy” will use your social networking page, such as Facebook, to retrieve personal information from you before placing a call to a victim’s family member or friend, asking for money.

Robert also reveals that a thief can easily change a caller ID. Just because the caller ID says it’s your friend, it doesn’t mean it is.

How do you avoid the disguised phone call scam? Robert recommends turning on privacy settings on your Facebook account..

Robert urges you to never trust a caller ID — thieves can easily change their numbers to make it seem like a friend or family number. Never reveal personal information on your Facebook page.

“Skimming” is a credit and debit card scam in which crooks tamper with debit-card processing equipment at the point of sale — inserting a tiny device into the store equipment that enables them to read the magnetic strip as it is swiped.

Tami Nealy, Senior Director of Corporate Communications at LifeLock, says the best way to avoid skimming is to be vigilant at the gas station pump, or wherever you use your debit card. Look for anything out of place. Any wires exposed? Tape evident? Hardware loose?

Also, when you insert your card, wiggle it while it’s in the slot. If something seems loose, there might be theft device attached to the swipe hardware. Wiggling the card might jar the theft device from its hiding place.

Last, Tami recommends using your hand to cover your PIN number as you punch it in at the ATM, just in case there’s a pinhole camera, which can record customers as they enter their PIN.

Insurance Fraud for $1.4m in Miami-Dade

The ringleaders behind a $1.4 million insurance scam veered little from the script that worked the first time in 2007, authorities say.

To start, they found accomplices who rented big houses in South Miami-Dade, which they then filled with used furniture, clothing and other items from stores like Goodwill, authorities say. Then they took out renter’s insurance policies.

After a few months, these renters would “accidentally” leave a candle burning next to a fake plant or some other flammable item, sparking a fire that would burn the homes’ interior. Thenthey would file insurance claims for as much as $120,000.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

In many cases, they would recycle the same burned furniture, lamps and even family pictures from one house to the next.

Authorities Wednesday arrested 20 people, including a public adjuster, in a conspiracy that they say was repeated a dozen times over five years.

“How emboldened could you get?” asked Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernández Rundle. “They wouldn’t even get new furniture. They’d take the same furniture they just filed the claim on, rent another house and put the same furniture that’s already been destroyed into the next house. They didn’t try to hide it at all.”

According to authorities, the ringleaders were Gustavo Adrián Godínez Díaz, 30, and Alina Núñez, 51, a public adjuster. Both face charges including racketeering, conspiracy, organized fraud, arson, insurance fraud and grand theft. Other alleged participants included María Julia Ferrer, 23; Raúl J. Ferrer, 22; Beltis Cabrera, 22; Camilo Cabrera Ramos, 45, and Lizbeth de la Nuez, 41.

The “straw renters” arrested in the case were Yanet Sánchez Baldeiche, 39; Carlos A. Cabrera Castillo, 49; Daylin Espinosa, 29; Mercedes Ferrer, 49; Higinio A. García, 87; Teresa García, 48; Raúl Hernández, 47; Mailliwnia Jiménez, 29; Jorge L. Milanes, 46; Maribel Melendi Mora, 29; Ceilin Arencibia Pérez, 32; Mario Morales Pérez, 42, and Eduardo Rodríguez Rodríguez, 33.

Operation Candlelight was a cooperative investigation of the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Economic Crimes and Arson Division and the Florida Division of the Fire Marshal. Fernández Rundle said about 40 percent of the fraud in Florida is committed in Miami-Dade.

Jeff Atwater, the state’s chief financial officer and fire marshal, came to Miami for Wednesday’s press conference. He said all property owners are victims when scammers defraud the insurance industry. “Everybody who will write a check for their property insurance, their rates will go up when this behavior is not dealt with aggressively,” he said. “How long do these cheats and thieves go on thinking that the only victim is a big insurance company?”

Wrongful Death 1 Dead 2 Injured and a Baby in the Street

A baby found in a car seat in the middle of a Massachusetts road led police to a brutal crime scene in a case authorities are calling “very disturbing” and “peculiar.”

Two women are in the hospital in critical condition today and one man is dead in Worcester, Mass.

At 11:56 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a call from a driver who spotted a baby sitting in a car seat in the middle of the road.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

The 3-month-old baby boy was unhurt, but taken to a hospital for evaluation. Police began canvassing the neighborhood and knocking on doors in search for the parents. They were directed to a home at 326 Lovell St.

“Police knocked on several of the doors to that apartment but did not receive an answer,” Worcester police said in a news release. “Police heard sounds of a person in distress inside the apartment, so a forced entry was conducted.”

Inside, police discovered a man and woman lying on the floor. The man was unresponsive and the woman was injured, police said. Another woman as found injured elsewhere in the apartment. A loose pit bull was also in the residence.

The man, later identified as 32-year-old Javier Maldonado, was declared dead and the two women, ages 36 and 18, were taken to the hospital where they are in critical condition, police said. The 18-year-old is the mother of the baby that was found in the street.

Police will not comment on what kind of injuries the women sustained and an autopsy is being performed on Maldonado today.

Authorities are tight-lipped about the investigation.

“We’re trying to piece together why the child was left in the middle of the road. It was highly unusual,” Sgt. Kerry Hazelhurst told ABCNews.com. “There are a lot of questions we have unanswered right now.”

Hazelhurst called the baby in the road “very disturbing and unusual and peculiar.” He could not comment on how or why the baby was left in the street.

Police have not made any arrests and are “trying to cultivate” a list of suspects.

A neighbor who lives across the street from the house said he was in bed on Saturday night when he heard the commotion.

“It was a surprise because it was close to the midnight and we saw the flashing police cars,” the neighbor, who did not wish to be named, told ABCNews.com. “[At first], I didn’t pay too much attention, but then I got up because there were so many police cars.”

He said he believes that the two women had moved into the house about a month ago, but he did not know the people well.

“The police came over and talked to my wife and he said it was awful,” the neighbor said.

The baby was unharmed and is in the custody of the Department of Children and Families. The pit bull was taken by a Worchester Police animal control officer.

Missing Person Found Unresponisve But Alive After a Week

Days turned into a week near a sprawling county park in South San Jose. Commuters zoomed past Highway 101, as they always did, and hikers and bicyclists enjoyed the scenery under the sparkling afternoon sun.

But there was one disturbing change to the area that apparently nobody realized: A young man who had been missing for seven days since crashing his pickup lay in a deep thick brush of bushes and trees next to a freeway offramp, obscured from view. He was alive, but unconscious.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

On Wednesday, authorities revealed the harrowing tale of 25-year-old Michael Sanchez Jr., who was rushed to the hospital the day before after being found. Whether or not he will survive after spending an entire week alone, missing in the urban wilderness, is still in question. And now the California Highway Patrol, which initially searched for Sanchez at the crash site, is facing questions of its own on why officers didn’t find him, and why they abandoned their search after an hour.

“We were looking all over for this gentleman,” said CHP Lt. Les Bishop. “We not only searched the immediate area and the brush, but we checked the shoulders on the freeway, the neighborhoods and the adjacent park.”

The Andrew High Hill graduate’s family first reported him missing to the San Jose Police Department on Thursday night after he failed to show up at a funeral that evening. Detectives had little to go on, and came up empty when they started their search Friday.

But then the big break came Monday, when they learned that Sanchez’s 1991 tan Ford Ranger pickup truck had crashed at 1 a.m. on May 8 near Hellyer Avenue and Highway 101 in South San Jose, next to the 354-acre Hellyer County Park.

Witnesses saw a man climb out of the overturned pickup truck and leave the area before the CHP arrived. Officers along with local firefighters and the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office searched the surroundings for about an hour, using portable high-powered lights to illuminate the area, Bishop said.

San Jose detectives obtained full information on the crash Tuesday, when they went out and found Sanchez at 5:45 p.m. in a wooded area, hidden from the roadway — next to the crash site at the eastern edge of the county park.

“That’s where he was found, way down there and out of view,” said San Jose police Officer Jose Garcia.

His unresponsive body was taken to Regional Medical Center in San Jose, and authorities could not disclose his condition Wednesday. Police, however, said they had not been able to talk to him.

“To learn this person was out there for a week and be found alive is a huge moment” for family members, Garcia said.

Sanchez had called someone he knew about 10 minutes before the crash. He was last seen leaving his home for work the previous afternoon.

Bishop said information in the car led them initially to believe the missing person was from Visalia.

“Fortunately the CHP gave them a really solid lead,” said Garcia, who noted the CHP is now in charge of the investigation. “As far as the detectives are concerned, we’re definitely proud of the work they do on a daily basis.”
