Private Detective Aubrey Rodriguez Arrest for Child Abuse

Nicholasville Police have arrested a babysitter who allegedly assaulted a 10-month-old child in her care.

Audrey Rodriguez, 50, of Nicholasville was arrested Monday and charged with second-degree assault. The charge stems from an investigation in which detectives received information from a medical facility that a 10-month-old child had been injured and the injuries were consistent with some type of abuse. The child had to undergo surgery to repair her injuries. She is back at home with her parents at this time.

This investigation started on April 10 after investigators received information from the University of Kentucky Hospital that a 10-month-old child had been admitted to the hospital with injuries consistent with abuse. It was later determined that the child was in the care of the listed suspect in the case when the incident took place.

Police are asking that anyone who may have had children in her care in the past to please call the Nicholasville Police Department.

Insurance Fraud failed by LoJack System

HESPERIA • An Arizona man allegedly trying to commit insurance fraud was caught after the LoJack system on his vehicle alerted investigators to the crime, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Hesperia station officials said Monday.

Ricardo Felix, 31, of Phoenix was arrested on Saturday for grand theft auto and insurance fraud after the vehicle he had reported stolen to his insurance company was located at a family member’s home, according to a release.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

Victor Valley station Sergeant Shelly Krusbe received a LoJack notification of a stolen vehicle in the area of 11th Avenue and Bear Valley Road on Saturday, officials said. Several deputies from the Victor Valley, Victorville and Hesperia station responded to the call and discovered the vehicle hidden in the back of a home in the 11900 block of 10th Avenue in Hesperia.

Hesperia Deputy Lisa Guerra contacted the registered owner, later identified as Felix, to inform him his vehicle had been found and four people were being detained, officials said.

Through an investigation it was learned Felix had conspired with family members to hide his vehicle then report it stolen to Huntington Park police, according to authorities. He then reported the alleged theft to his insurance company.

What Felix didn’t know, though, was that his vehicle was equipped with the LoJack system, according to Sue Rose, spokeswoman for the Hesperia station.

Authorities are waiting to see if the District Attorney’s office will also file charges on Felix’s conspirators, officials stated.

Felix was being held at West Valley Detention Center on $25,000 bail.

Electronic Surveillance Aids In Drug Sweep

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Police used surveillance video in an effort called Operation Clean Sweep to help rid the Hill District of drug activity.

All told, police made over 60 arrests over the past five months.

“Police arrested over 60 individuals over the last couple of months from drug trafficking,” Pittsburgh mayor Luke Ravenstahl said Monday.

http://liarcatchers.com/electronic_surveillance.html

Police chief Nate Harper explained the success of the operation.

“Over 15 search warrants were executed,” Harper said. “There was over $83,422 in U.S. currency. Eight firearms were seized, two vehicles (and) 27 ounces cocaine.”

Along with getting drugs, guns and dealers off the streets, Operation Clean Sweep was intended to also get help for addicts in order to break the drug cycle.

Area residents are skeptical of the idea, but are hopeful successful results will follow a successful Operation Clean Sweep.

Fraud Investigation Coupon Scam

Somerset Police say in just a matter of days, four people scammed a Kroger store out of $6,000. And they did it using coupons.

This is a first-of-its-kind case in Pulaski County, if not the state. Investigators spent months sorting through surveillance video and receipts before arresting a cashier and three customers accused using coupons for items they never bought.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

In November, police say the cashier at the south Kroger was caught on camera overriding coupons for those customers in exchange for money and gift cards. Fast forward five months and detectives have enough evidence to make several arrests.

“As far as I know, this is the first time I’ve seen this happen,” said Detective Christopher Gates with the Somerset Police Department.

Det. Gates can’t release the surveillance video because of the ongoing investigation. He can show a receipt he says shows hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise Anita and Paul Chumbley bought, but only paid pennies for because cashier Sabrina Pitman would override their coupons.

“They were using coupons for items that they didn’t even purchase and on several of the coupons, according to Kroger, Kroger didn’t even carry the brand and they were still overriding and using the coupons and using coupons for things Kroger doesn’t even carry,” said Det. Gates.

Police say another customer, Tabitha Watters, would shop overnight to avoid being caught abusing hundreds of coupons.

“This is a receipt that stretches more than 20-feet long and a gallon and a half size zip lock bag full of coupons,” said Det. Gates.

The four people have been arrested for what Gates called a “white collar crime”. The suspects didn’t go to jail this time and either don’t have a criminal history or have non-violent previous charges. Still, it was a positive outcome for the Department.

“It’s a very good, very good investigation, very good case for us,” said Det. Gates.

LEX18 tried reaching out to each suspect, two of whom live in Somerset, while the Chumbley couple lives in Russell Springs, but we couldn’t get through to any of them.

Gates expects this case to go to trial and says all four suspects are due back in court later this week.

Fraud Investigation Defendants Claim Documents Forged.

TROY — Two defendants in the ballot-fraud case claimed Monday that they were the victims of forged documents introduced at their trial earlier this year.

Rensselaer County Democratic Elections Commissioner Edward McDonough and former City Councilman Michael LoPorto went to the Troy Police Department to file a complaint about the forged documents.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

“We’re alleging there was a forged document in our case presented against us,” LoPorto said.

They are seeking a police investigation into the alleged forgery.

McDonough and LoPorto were on trial in Rensselaer County Court for more than two months earlier this year for their alleged roles in a Democratic scheme to steal the 2009 Working Families Party primary for Troy City Council by forging absentee ballots.

The case ended with a hung jury. The two are expected to be retried later this year.

McDonough and LoPorto claimed that Jolene M. VanVranken’s signature was forged on an affidavit presented to the grand jury. They said they didn’t know who forged the document, but noted that Special Prosecutor Trey Smith notarized the affidavit, indicating he saw Van Vranken sign it.

Smith could not be immediately reached for comment.

The issue of the document came up during VanVranken’s testimony at the trial. At that time, she said she did not sign the statement.

“That signature was not Mrs. VanVranken’s. Who forged the document that was presented at our trial?” McDonough said Monday.

McDonough and LoPorto said they have hired a private investigator. They said they are also seeking to find Jermaine Joseph, another witness who testified that he did not sign a document in evidence.

McDonough and LoPorto produced a statement from Robert Baier, a handwriting expert whom they hired, saying it was not VanVranken’s signature on the document in question.

Wrongful Death Charles Stephenson Arrested

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Charles Stephenson was arrested for drug trafficking last Monday and tried to commit suicide as police searched his home. He entered a not guilty plea to those charges Monday morning.

It’s unclear if police think he’s connected to the Kentucky murders of his uncle and aunt, Bill and Peggy Stephenson. They were found dead in their Florence home last May.

Identity Theft Upper East Dumpster Divers

Dumpster-diving thieves are gleaning sensitive financial information from documents tossed by some of Manhattan’s richest residents — and the identity theft is creating a citywide spike in grand larceny, The Post has learned.

The high-tech hoods are plucking bank-account and credit-card statements from Upper East Side trash cans and using the information to create bogus savings and checking accounts, open up lines of credit and sometimes even transfer money into their own accounts, sources said.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

The thefts are driving up reports of grand larceny, which have risen citywide 10.2 percent this year compared to the first few months of 2011, according to the most recent NYPD CompStat figures.

On the Upper East Side alone this year, grand larcenies increased 48.3 percent, to 367, compared to the same period last year, when 261 were logged, the numbers reveal.

But the lure of a quick score via identity theft isn’t isolated to the Upper East. Sources in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office say identity crimes have begun to trump drug dealing as the go-to moneymaker in hardscrabble nabes where narcotics once thrived.

“We found reams of personal and financial informationm along with scales and other drug-dealing supplies, in one suspect’s home,” said one law-enforcement source.

“We asked about the scales, and he said, ‘Oh, I don’t do that anymore. This is easier, and I make more money.’ ”

Aside from identity theft, police and prosecutors said several other factors are to blame for the jump in grand larcenies — including skimming devices and sticky-fingered house help.

“We’ve got a problem with home-care attendants, cat sitters and other people coming in to perform services,” said Inspector Matthew Whelan, commanding officer of the Upper East Side’s 19th Precinct.

The purloiners are pocketing jewelry, electronics and cash, Whelan warned at a recent community meeting. “We have 21 of those complaints this year, versus seven last year,” he said.

And the crooks are getting creative. One dressed as a Bloomingdale’s employee, complete with name tag, stood outside the flagship store on East 59th Street and offered prospective customers a steep discount, cops said.

The phony staffer swindled $4,000 from one victim and duped another into forking over $4,600 before finally getting caught, cops added.

The Upper East Side stands among the top 10 precincts driving the increase.

The High Bridge section of The Bronx has seen a 67 percent rise in grand-larceny reports this year compared to last, from 89 to 149 from January through early April.

Only about a dozen of the city’s 76 precincts have seen a decrease this year.
