Madison Woman Charged in Marriage Fraud Investigation

U.S. Attorney David Fein and Bruce Foucart, special agent for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, have charged a Madison woman, Dawn Peck, 34, with an address listed as Summer Hill Road, and nine others on federal charges stemming from their alleged involvement in a marriage fraud scheme.

According to court documents and statements made in court, in November 2010, Homeland Security Investigations initiated an investigation into fraudulent marriages that had allegedly been arranged between Moroccan nationals and U.S. citizens in order for the Moroccan nationals to unlawfully immigrate to the United States.

The investigation included the use of consensual recordings, an examination of immigration and airline records, and other information, Fein’s office said.

Health Care Fraud Investigation

ABERDEEN – Robert S. Corkern is the latest defendant to face federal charges alleging a multi-million-dollar health care fraud in north Mississippi.

Tuesday, Corkern pleaded not guilty to four counts and remains free on $40,000 bond.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

The indictment against him wasn’t publicly posted, but new details on the U.S. District Court of Northern Mississippi website show he is accused of conspiracy to defraud the U.S., three counts of loan and credit application fraud, and one count of bribery involving federal programs.

Corkern will face trial Dec. 12 with co-defendants Raymond L. Shoemaker, a Tupelo health care executive, and Earnest Levi “Lee” Garner Jr., a Batesville businessman.

Shoemaker and Garner, who declined to appear in federal court Tuesday, face no additional charges in the new indictment.

They each pleaded not guilty several months ago and are free on bond.

They are accused in a scheme allegedly committed while Shoemaker was chief executive officer of Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville. He also is accused of embezzlement from Humphreys County Hospital while he was administrator.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not respond to Daily Journal calls about who Corkern is or how he is allegedly involved with the accusations.

An Internet search for Robert Corkern shows that last March, a Dr. Robert S. Corkern surrendered his license to prescribe narcotics and controlled substances, the Batesville newspaper reported.

The newspaper also reported that Corkern’s Batesville office was searched by local law enforcement and the Mississippi State Medical Licensure Board.

Corkern, a family practice and emergency medicine physician, apparently was under investigation for more than a year on allegations he misused prescription drugs.

At that time, he said patients were selling his prescriptions, chiefly for Methadone, without his knowledge.

He was not arrested or charged with any crime, at that time, and continued practicing medicine.

Methadone is used for treatment of opioid dependence and for pain relief.

Internal Fraud Investigation

Even the best compliance programs struggle with the potential for a fraud incident. When an employee reports a major fraud infraction, whether through a personal report, internal hotline or through the whispering of the rumor mill, every company should have a procedure in place to handle an investigation into financial wrongdoing.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

It is important to recognize that compliance programs fail despite your company’s best efforts. Your company’s next steps are what matters most. The next steps should include:

Determine whether the allegation is credible.
Notify the proper chain of command to handle the initial inquiry.
Begin an investigation immediately.
If a full investigation is needed, decide if it will be done internally or if an external resource, such as an attorney, private investigator, computer analyst or forensic accountant is needed.
Gather information and documents.
If outside investigators are involved, engage legal counsel to protect information under attorney-client privilege.
Make corrections in your company’s compliance processes to correct any gaps revealed in the investigation process.

2-Year ID Theft Investigation

“Prosecutors call it the biggest identity theft bust in U.S. history. 111 bank tellers, retail workers, waiters and alleged criminals were charged with running a credit-card-stealing organization that stole more than $US13 million in less than a year-and-a-half. ‘This is by far the largest

Body found in field identified as missing Cosmos man

OLIVIA — The body found Saturday in a cornfield northeast of Hector has been identified.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Renville County Sheriff Scott Hable announced late Monday that it was Robert J. Verdon, 56, of Cosmos.

In early September, the Renville County Sheriff’s Office located and recovered a vehicle belonging to Verdon, which had been found abandoned near the cornfield where his body was ultimately discovered, the sheriff said in a news release. Verdon’s family later filed a missing person’s report with the Sheriff’s Office in Meeker County, where Verdon resided.

An autopsy was completed at the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office, but the official cause and manner of Verdon’s death are still pending, Hable said in the release.

The Renville County and Meeker County sheriff’s offices and the state Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are continuing to investigate.

The body was found Saturday by a farmer harvesting corn in Brookfield Township.

Pedophile, 65, jailed for country boarding hostel sex offences

THE victims of one of Australia’s worst serial pedophiles will be feeling “robbed and shocked” by the sentence imposed on him, a national child abuse expert says.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Adults Surviving Child Abuse director and former chairwoman Cathy Kezelman said the six known victims of serial pedophile Dennis John McKenna would be bitterly disappointed by his minimum four-year and four-month sentence handed down in the Perth District Court today.

“Some of them may well feel revictimised by the whole process because it just doesn’t appear that justice has been done,” Dr Kezelman said.

“I really question how that judgment can be made when you have someone who’s a serial offender and who was in a position of trust and repeatedly betrayed that trust.

“How can you make a judgment that that person is not a high risk to society?”

Dr Kezelman said a Victorian study in 2008 found that children who had been sexually abused were 18 times more likely to commit suicide.

“When you’ve been abused in childhood, in your developmental years, it affects the development of the brain,” she said.

“It affects the way you feel about yourself, the way you relate to the world, and has major repercussions.

“It’s a life sentence.”

Dr Kezelman said with the right help and support, victims of child abuse could go on to live “healthy constructive lives, but it does take a lot of support”.

McKenna, 65, pleaded guilty in August to 10 offences against six boys at a youth boarding hostel in Katanning, including gross indecency between males and carnal knowledge against nature.

At the time, from 1976 to 1985, he was employed at St Andrew’s Hostel and the boys were under his care.

In the District Court today, Chief Judge Peter Martino sentenced McKenna to 6 years and 4 months imprisonment, backdated to July 18.

He will be eligible for parole 4 years and 4 months into the sentence.

McKenna has been jailed before for similar offences.

Outside court, victim Daryl Stephens, who has waived his legal right to anonymity, said he and his family had suffered for years because of the abuse he suffered at the hands of McKenna.

When asked if there were more victims he replied: “Oh for sure yeah, definitely, definitely.

“Since he has been out of jail there must be people out there …a leopard doesn’t changes its spots.

Echoing Dr Kezelman’s concerns, Mr Stephens said the sexual abuse had led to victims taking drastic action including self-harm, alcoholism, drugs and suicide.

“There have been seven suicides that we know of that related to this,” he said.

“There have been families splitting up, everything that you could think of has happened to us all – it has been bloody hard.

“I thought I was the only boy, but as the years went on there were more and more. I didn’t realise we could do anything about it until this Redress thing came out.”

Perth lawyer John Hammond is representing a group of the victims.

“Next week we propose to lodge with the State Government applications for ex-gratia payment,” he said.

“A lot of the victims today received Redress payments but we say they deserve a lot more for having their lives wrecked.”

Joggers Discover Body of Missing LCSC Student

LATAH CO., ID – The body of an LCSC student missing for over two weeks was found over the weekend.

When 36 year old Joshwa Merriken went missing, investigators didn’t expect to find his body on the side of the highway.

“They discovered a body laying in the ditch line,” said Idaho State Police Trooper Chad Montgomery. “They called us, we went out there and we identified the person as Joshwa Merriken.”

Merriken was reported missing September 30th. He was last seen walking up the Lewiston hill toward Moscow.

It was two joggers who spotted Merriken’s body. Montgomery said even he’s driven by this area in the past two weeks. But the tall grass made it difficult to see anything hiding from a passing car.

“He was down in a deeper portion of the ditch line and his backpack obscured the image of his body for the most part so you weren’t able to see anything at all until you were right there,” said Montgomery. “So someone traveling at 60 miles an hour down the highway as a passenger or driver wouldn’t think twice as it being normal road debris.”

Montgomery said road debris found by the scene just south of Moscow points them to an 87 to 91 Ford F series pickup, possibly pulling a trailer in the bed or in tow.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“That debris was left there recently,” said Montgomery. “So we’re verifying that to see if that is actually involved by pulling fingerprints and DNA off of the equipment.”

In a statement released on Sunday, LCSC president Tony Fernandez said “We are deeply saddened by the news of the death of LCSC student Joshwa Merriken. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and the LCSC community.”

Investigators continue to process the evidence gathered at the scene in hopes of giving them a better idea of what happened. Officials are asking anyone with information that might be helpful to this investigation to call the Idaho state police at (208) 799-5150.

Body found in duffel bag identified as missing Oklahoma City woman

The body found in a duffel bag behind a Homeland store has been identified as a missing Oklahoma City woman.
Carina B. Saunders, 19, was identified using dental records Monday afternoon, Bethany Police Chief Phil Cole said.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Saunders had been reported missing to Oklahoma City police Sept. 28 and was last seen alive near NW 41 and MacArthur Boulevard on Oct. 8 or 9, Cole said.

A cause of death was not released Monday by the state medical examiner’s office, nor has a suspect been named.

Bethany police had gone through missing person records and given the records on at least one missing person to the medical examiner.

The body was found Thursday in a field behind the Homeland at NW 23 and Rockwell.

Animal welfare volunteers managing a feral cat colony in the field found the duffle bag Thursday morning and called police. The first officer on the scene unzipped the bag slightly and discovered it contained a body.

Police said the body likely was there for at least a couple of days before it was found. They have asked anyone who was in the area and saw anything unusual, including traffic in the alley behind the grocery store, to call Bethany police at 789-2323.

Missing persons case

The FBI’s recent capture of fugitive mobster James “Whitey” Bulger has sparked interest in locating the whereabouts of another former Alcatraz con.

For the past 37 years, authorities have sought ex-Alcatraz inmate Henry Lee Harbison alias Henry Johnson for questioning regarding the disappearance of his wife and two kids from their home in Independence, Missouri sometime in November 1974. At the time, he was wanted by the FBI for parole violations.

It is believed that he murdered his wife Freda Denman, 27, and abandoned his 4-year-old daughter Sheri and 10-month-old son Michael.

Continue reading on Examiner.com Ex-Alcatraz inmate wanted for questioning in missing person’s case – San Francisco alcatraz | Members of the prison gang CONS (Church of New Song), founded during Harbison’s stint in Atlanta in the early 1970’s, assert that the family was killed.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Harbison and Denman met in 1969 after he’d served nine years for auto theft.

The case was touched upon in the book “A Beautiful Child” by Matt Birkbeck.

Harbison’s criminal history dates back to the fifties when he was sentenced to seven years for violation of the National Motor Vehicle Theft Act and attempted escape.

On April 14, 1954, Harbison, along with notables like Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson, Robert Luke, and Allen West, was part of a 25-man chain that arrived on Alcatraz from Leavenworth, Kansas. He was assigned inmate number 1115-AZ, and served four years on the island. He was released in 1959, and has gone underground since 1974.

As of this writing, Henry Lee Harbison would be 77-years-old. He should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.

Anyone with information regarding this case should contact the FBI, Independence Police Department, or local law enforcement agency.
