Atlanta man arrested in credit card info theft ring

An Atlanta man was arrested and charged with credit card fraud and identity theft for his alleged participation in a group engaged in “skimming.”

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Steven Michael Jackson, 27, was the last defendant charged in the case. Eleven other people were indicted in August.

Jackson was charged Monday with conspiracy, access device fraud and aggravated identity theft, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release. He was released on a $25,000 bond.

The 11 defendants charged are from Atlanta, Lilburn, Lawrenceville, Stockbridge and Columbus.

From about June 2009 to November 2010, the alleged co-conspirators are accused of using electronic devices known as “skimmers” to copy and store debit and credit card information from customers without their knowledge, according to the news release.

They then allegedly transferred the stolen information to the magnetic strips of blank cards using “encoders” before using the altered cards for purchases.

Some of the defendants worked at the businesses where the skimming allegedly took place, including a McDonald’s in Atlanta, a Polished Nail Salon in Lawrenceville, and a Krystal and a Shogun Japanese Steakhouse in Columbus.

Two of the defendants — Sean Carlos Deloatch, 25, and Antonio Escobal, 33, from Columbus — pleaded guilty to some of the charges in September.

The previous indictment included 16 counts of conspiracy, access device fraud and aggravated theft, but not all of the defendants are charged with each offense, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Four Columbus residents involved in Fraud

A federal investigation into a large-scale Georgia credit card theft ring has reached into Columbus, producing four local arrests, including two guilty pleas last month.

Details of the scheme were released by the Department of Justice Monday after Steven Michael Jackson, 27, of Atlanta became the 11th and final defendant charged in the case, which dates back to 2009.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Sean Carlos Deloatch, 25, and Antonio Escobal, 33, both of Columbus, Georgia, pleaded guilty to charges in the indictment on Sept. 7. The remaining defendants were previously arraigned and were either detained or released on bond.

Dwayne Matthew Neely, 28, and Lakeysha Renee Hill, 25, both of Columbus, also face federal charges as part of the alleged conspiracy.

Authorities contend the defendants obtained and possessed electronic devices referred to as “skimmers,” which are capable of copying and storing debit and credit card account information. The defendants, some of whom were employed by restaurant and retail establishments, used the skimmers to copy and store debit and credit card account numbers from unsuspecting customers.

Two Columbus restaurants — Shogun Japanese Steakhouse and a local Krystal — were cited by the Department of Justice. Other establishments included a McDonald’s restaurant in Atlanta; and Polished Nail Salon in Lawrenceville, Ga. All of the impacted restaurants and retail establishments cooperated in the investigation, according to a news release.

The illegal activity occurred from June 2009 to November 2010, according to the United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates, the charges and other information presented in court.

“Identity theft continues to be a major problem that plagues our district and the nation at large,” Yates said, “Many of our community members have been victimized by identity theft or know someone who has. This case highlights our Office’s determination and ongoing commitment to bring those responsible for this distressing problem to justice.”

The U.S. Postal Service was also involved in the investigation.

Others charged include Norman Uriah Simmonds, 32, of Lilburn, Ga; Bryan Charles Jones, 32, of Atlanta; Jerome Christopher Ledgister, 25, of Stockbridge, Ga.; Tamicka Lashaun Trice, 26, of Atlanta; and Carmen Marie Walker, 24, of Atlanta.

Lena Lunsford, Mother of Missing 3-Year-Old Girl, Arrested

Lena Lunsford has been arrested, however these charges are not related to the case of missing Aliayah Lunsford.

According to the criminal complaint, Lena Lunsford did knowingly transfer a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card issued in her name and Personal Identification Number (PIN) issued to her to a person known to the United States Attorney, in order for that person to use the benefits on defendant Lena Lunsford’s SNAP EBT card to purchase approximately $114.82 of food in exchange for $50 in United States Currency.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Lunsford was released on her own personal recognizance Monday afternoon and is currently out free.

FBI investigators would not say if Lunsford is a suspect in her daughter’s disappearance.

“I’m not going over who’s a suspect… We’re not labeling anybody a suspect at this time. That investigation remains ongoing. We’re still committed to resolving this case favorably,” says FBI Special Agent Jeff Killeen.

Investigators are still looking at surveillance videos.

“We continue to get evidence everyday, in the form of most particularly, video evidence. Again, as I said last week, we’re looking very, very hard at video evidence. There’s a lot of public and private facilities around this area that have video cameras and video capability so we have scoured the area and it takes a long time. We’re trying to have a lot of that enhanced,” says Killeen.

If you think you have any video evidence that can help investigators, call the WVSP Weston Detachment at 304-269-0500.

Also, if you have information but aren’t comfortable calling law enforcement, you can call the 5 NEWS newsroom and we can forward the tips anonymously. To do so, call 304-848-5000 and ask for the newsroom.

Lansdowne man found dead

Baltimore County police say they believe an 18-year-old man found stabbed to death in a wooded area of Curtis Bay was killed sometime last week in Lansdowne.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Ryan Wesley Jackson, of the 3600 block of West Bay Ave., had been reported missing on Oct. 14 after his girlfriend hadn’t seen him for two days, county police said. On Oct. 15, his family visited a home in the 700 block of Rambo Court where they believed he might be.

Jackson remained missing until Saturday afternoon, when city police found the body of a man who had been stabbed to death in the area of Pennington Ave and Aspen St., in a wooded area near an industrial park. County police said he “visible traumatic injuries.”

Attempts to reach Jackson’s family by phone were unsuccessful, but his father told ABC-2 that the home on Rambo Court where family members found blood is a “known drug house.”

“Whatever the incident was, it doesn’t give another person rights to take someone’s life,” Reginald Jackson told the station. According to that report, Ryan Jackson’s girlfriend is pregnant and was expected to deliver within the week.

Batton said police do not know of a motive and were continuing to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call 410-307-2020

Utah County Couple Mortgage Fraud Scheme

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – October 17, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — A federal grand jury returned an eight-count indictment Wednesday afternoon charging Portia R. Louder, age 40, and Chad Louder, age 41, both of Highland, with criminal violations of federal law in connection with what the indictment alleges was a scheme to profit from loans fraudulently obtained from mortgage lenders.
Portia R. Louder is charged in the indictment with three counts of false statements to financial institutions; three counts of wire fraud; and one count of money laundering. Chad Louder is charged with two counts of false statements to financial institutions.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

“Prosecuting mortgage fraud cases continues to be a priority in our office. It’s a problem that has cost banks, borrowers, and homeowners in Utah tens of millions of dollars. As today’s indictment demonstrates, we will continue to aggressively prosecute those individuals we believe have exploited the mortgage and real estate process for their own personal gain,” Acting U.S. Attorney Carlie Christensen said.

“Multi-million-dollar schemes, such as the one alleged in today’s indictment, contributed to the collapse of the housing market. The FBI is committed to investigating this type of egregious fraud. This indictment charging the Louders alleges they fraudulently obtained millions of dollars by providing false information to lenders, sellers, and others. Through the hard work of the FBI, the IRS, the United States Attorney’s Office, and others who have contributed to the investigation, this couple now faces serious federal charges,” FBI Special Agent in Charge David J. Johnson said.

“Mortgage fraud falls within the scope of IRS Criminal Investigation because it is a financial crime. Our agents use money laundering statutes to investigate individuals who profit from such illegal activity which has played a major role in almost crippling this nation’s banking system,” Jeanne Killoran, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Las Vegas Field Office of IRS Criminal Investigation.

According to the indictment, the defendants targeted expensive homes for purchase. They looked for homes being sold by owners and often those not listed on the Multiple Listing Service. This way, the indictment alleges, the defendants could, through the substitution of nominees and straw parties, raise the purchase price of a home without the lender’s learning of the sales price set by the owner.

The indictment focuses on three homes in Alpine, Draper, and Highland. According to the indictment, Portia R. Louder purchased or directed the purchase of these homes. As a part of the scheme, after finding a home she wished to purchase or have purchased, she offered to purchase the home at or near the seller’s asking price. Then she would tell the seller or have someone tell the seller that there was a new buyer for the property who would purchase the property for substantially more than the original sales price, but the original seller would get only the price agreed upon between the seller and Portia R. Louder or her nominee.

Portia R. Louder typically used a straw party or nominee to form a joint venture with the original seller of a property. The joint venture, acting at the direction of Portia R. Louder, would become entitled to a payment from the loans eventually obtained at an artificially inflated price.

Portia R. Louder, according to the indictment, commissioned appraisals on properties even though she often was not listed as the purchaser or the seller. The indictment alleges she paid as much as $5,000 for an appraisal even though an appraisal on an average home would often cost $500 or less, and an appraisal on a high end home often cost about $1,500. From 2006 through 2007, the indictment alleges she paid about $380,000 to appraisers.

By concealing the initial sales price, the defendants were able to artificially increase the prices of the homes disclosed to lenders. According to the indictment, the sellers of the property in Alpine received $1,340,000 in June 2006 and the transaction closed for $2,205,000. The sellers of the property in Highland received $1,500,000 in July 2006 and the transaction closed for $2,500,000. The sellers of a property in Draper received $1,115,000 at closing in December 2007 and the transaction closed for $2,400,000.

The indictment alleges a variety of false and fraudulent ways Portia R. Louder recruited straw purchasers, including the defendant Chad Louder, as well as others, to submit applications to obtain mortgages on the properties listed in the indictment.

The indictment includes a notice of intent to seek criminal forfeiture in the amount of $3,900,000 million in currency received and diverted by Portia R. Louder in connection with the conduct alleged in the indictment. Prosecutors are seeking $2,450,000 million from Chad Louder.

Summonses will be issued to the Louders to appear in federal court for an initial appearance on the charges. The potential maximum penalty for false statements to a financial institution is up to 30 years with a potential fine of $1 million. Wire fraud carries a potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison and money laundering is up to 10 years in prison. These counts have potential fines of up to $250,000.

Indictments are not findings of guilt. Defendants charged in indictments are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty in court.

The case is being investigated by the FBI, IRS Criminal Investigation, the Utah Mortgage Fraud Task Force, and the Utah Department of Commerce’s Division of Real Estate.

Hollywood celebrity private investigator Paul Barresi

The reasons long-time Hollywood celebrity private investigator Paul Barresi (pictured) was banned from attending his father’s funeral on September 29 in Lemoore, California are long and complicated. But certainly one of the contributing factors is his decision to work on a book about his fractured family life, tentatively titled Bless Me Father, For I Have Sinned.

What is much more unusual is how Barresi decided to deal with this traumatic situation. In the same manner that he has staked out locations for law-firm assigned clients ranging from Sylvester Stallone to Arnold Schwarzenegger to Eddie Murphy, Barresi camped out on that day near the church and later at the cemetery, watching from afar through the lenses of high-powered binoculars.

http://liarcatchers.com/electronic_surveillance.html

“This was the most painful experience of my life,” Barresi tells FishbowlLA via telephone. “One of my brothers was too sick to attend, but the other two–Matthew and Mark—finally spotted me about halfway through the burial service. They squinted and looked at me with such anger and disdain. I didn’t care that they spotted me. At that point, I came out of the bushes, about 100 yards away.”

Barresi’s dad Nick passed away on September 22 at age 87, three days after falling from a ladder. A half a block away from St. Peter’s Catholic Church, the disconsolate son watched as his dad’s casket, draped in an American flag, was carried in and out by members of the U.S. Marine Corps. He had been warned that if he tried to enter the church, he would be thrown out by an off-duty cop in attendance who is also a close friend of his mother.

Barresi says that a California Highway Patrol officer also later spied him at the cemetery but refrained from taking any action. When everyone had left, he was able to approach the burial site as two maintenance men were preparing to inter the casket.

“The cemetery director walked up to me on my blind side and asked who I was,” Barresi recalls. “I told him, ‘Paul Barresi, and this is my father.’ The cemetery director then stepped back and told me, ‘Go ahead, it’s okay, take a few minutes with your father.’ By now, I was sobbing uncontrollably. I asked if I could see my father one last time as I was not allowed to attend the viewing at church. He said ‘No, I’m so sorry.’” Barresi would go on to place at the grave site a letter he had prepared.

Before becoming a private investigator, Barresi worked as an adult film star. But he says he doesn’t think that part of his life had anything to do with his family’s harsh funeral day comportment.

Bishop Finn-dicted Protecting Pedophile Priest

Kansas City Bishop Robert W. Finn was indicted along with the Diocese of Kansas City on Friday for failure to report an egregious case of child abuse. The misdemeanor indictment involves Finn’s protection of a pedophile priest, Father Shawn Ratigan, who kept child pornography on his computer. Ratigan was allowed to continue priestly duties throughout the diocese, including contact with children, even though hundreds of photographs of children were discovered by the Bishop on Ratigan’s laptop. The pictures including upskirt pictures of girls and pictures of a young girl naked from the waist down.

While Kansas City priests tiptoed around the news in masses on Sunday, there is no doubt that the indictment is another warning shot aimed at the enclave of the Vatican. With abuse victims filing a criminal complaint against the Vatican at the International Criminal Court in the Hague, the worldwide scope of the sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church has grown.

Pair this with pending cases in Philadelphia against Monsignor Lynn, archdiocesan administrator for sex abuse cases, and the tally of criminal indictments will likely increase. While the Pope speaks of evangelization and faith, scores of Catholics are voting with their feet to leave the church, or choose to make their relationship with the Catholic Church stop at the end of their local church’s driveway.

Changes to the liturgy have many up in arms, and still, Cardinals and Bishops like Philadelphia’s Bishop Chaput can only whine about how terrible the press is, without being accountable for the actions that have caused the press to scrutinize the church so intensely. Luckily for Bishop Chaput the Philadelphia Inquirer pointed out how the Bishop was pastoral to Monsignor Lynn at a recent banquet, noting how difficult the ordeal has been for him. Bishop Chaput: What about the young men who were raped?

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

While the USCCB is gearing up for next month’s meeting, hoping to promote a pro-life agenda, perhaps they should take time to pay attention to the lives that they have irreparably damaged, if not ruined, by ignoring the repeated reports of rape and sexual abuse of children. The church does not need another plan; what’s needed is action and more indictments to get the attention of an institution that has sacrificed children to protect its rotten hierarchy. I for one cannot wait for the real purge of tainted clerics to happen.
