Suspect arrested in locker room thefts

HOUSTON – Police have arrested a man they say may be responsible for a string of thefts at more than a dozen Houston-area schools.
Paul Anthony Scrutchin, 28, was arrested on Friday and charged with three counts of burglary of a building.
Crime Stoppers received tips from viewers who said they recognized Scrutchin in surveillance video.
Since the school year began, someone has stolen thousands of dollars worth of cash and electronics from locker rooms at 16 area schools. The thefts happened as recently as September 24, police said.
Most of the schools targeted were private schools, but police say at least three HISD schools may have been burglarized by the same man.
Surveillance cameras at HISD’s Chavez High, Booker T. Washington High and Scarborough High School showed a burglar fitting the same description as the private school cases.
During the first home football game of the season, Lutheran South Academy’s locker rooms were broken into, school officials said.
“We just noticed our locks were on the floor, and everyone was like, ‘Check your phones, check your laptops.’ My friends had their laptops stolen, and I looked on the shelf where my phone was and it was gone. We were all shocked,” said Nick Baggott, a high school junior.

http://liarcatchers.com/electronic_surveillance.html

Investigators said thefts happen during practice or actual games, while the players are on the field.
“He used bolt cutters—had them in a black bag. Other schools I’ve talked to said he’s used the same thing,” said Rob Psencik, the athletic director at Lutheran South.
Surveillance cameras show the burglar gaining access to the secured building by following the dance team inside. You can see him going into the home locker room as well as the visitors’.
“From us, he got about $15,000 worth of merchandise,” Psencik said. “It’s kind of scary, especially how he blends. He asked a kid, ‘Where’s the locker room?’, and the kid says, ‘Go on in and take a right.’ He feels confident that he blends in.”
School officials say they are taking extra security precautions to keep thefts from happening during games. But Houston police say most of the burglaries are happening during practice and during the middle of the week.

Teenager Owes $600,000 in Mortgage Loans After ID Theft

Seventeen-year-old Scottsdale, Ariz., resident Caitlin “Caitie” Hemmerle is up to her eyeballs in debt, including owing $600,000 in mortgage loans and another $100,000 in car loans and credit cards.

How did this happen? Easy. Caitie is a victim of child identity theft, a practice that is growing for one simple reason: Nobody bothers to monitor their kids’ credit and ID. In Caitie’s case, the details of which can be seen in the “Today” show video below, investigators determined that her Social Security number was stolen when she was just 3 years old. The scammers went on a shopping spree undetected for years — a buying jag that included taking out at least three mortgages, refinancing twice, buying cars and opening at least 42 credit card or charge accounts in her name.

“Children’s Social Security numbers are uniquely valuable because they’re essentially a clean slate for an identity thief,” says Jamie May, chief investigator with AllClear ID, an identity protection company. “A thief can pair a child’s Social Security number with any name, date of birth or address and create a new identity.”

Caitie’s dad discovered the problem when he signed her up for a free child scan with AllClear ID. The results were startling. The family filed a police report, and AllClear worked to repair Caitie’s credit. All but one account has been removed from her record.

“The best advice to parents is to check for misuse of their child’s information early, before they run into problems like Caitlin’s,” May says.

Children’s information can be stolen from numerous sources. Attacks range from sophisticated cyber-hacks to simple theft of computers, school records, hospital records or other physical equipment containing large amounts of child data.

And, as the “Today” video points out, when lenders check credit, they frequently don’t match up the Social Security number with the name of the applicant.

Here are some things you can do to protect your child from the dangers of identity theft:

• Monitor the mail. If preapproved credit offers or other unsolicited financial offers start showing up, it’s an indication that your child has an open credit file.

• Teach your children not share personal information online, including on social networking sites.

• Never use your child’s name or Social Security number to open an account for yourself.

• Check your child’s credit early. Complicated cases could take years to resolve and interfere with their ability to get college loans.

Charter School Hired Pedophile

STOCKTON, Calif. (CN) – A nonprofit charter school system that has received financial contributions from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Oprah Winfrey has been named in a child sex-abuse lawsuit.
The child, suing through her mother, says she was molested by her art teacher last year while attending California-based Aspire Schools’ Benjamin Holt academy, and that the physical education teacher facilitated the abuse by letting them spend time alone together when she was supposed to be in gym class. She was 11 years old during the four months of the alleged abuse.
Michael Hartsock, the art teacher, is currently out on bail after he was charged with six felony counts of “grooming a minor for sexual molestation,” according to the complaint filed in San Joaquin County Superior Court.
“Aspire knew or should have known of Hartsock’s pedophilic tendaecies, or of Hartsock’s incompetence to responsibly supervise children,” the complaint states.
While Hartsock was allegedly abusing the girl, another teacher, Michael Merritt, put her in harm’s way, according to the complaint.
“Early in the fall semester of 2010 at Benjamin Holt K-12, defendant Hartsock approached defendant Merritt with a plan that would arrange for [the girl] to not attend P.E. as required, but instead be alone with defendant Hartsock,” according to the complaint. “Despite the obvious danger this would place [the girl] in, defendant Merritt agreed.
“That agreement consisted of the P.E. teacher, defendant Merritt, concealing [the girl’s] absence from class while she was kept in the possession of the art teacher, defendant Hartsock,” the complaint continues. “Merritt accomplished this by marking [the girl] present for P.E., despite her constant absence.
“Merritt gave [the girl] an ‘A+’ for the semester despite her rare or nonexistent attendance. Merritt even made a comment on [the girl’s] report card to the effect that she is a delight to have in class.”
While Hartsock had the girl alone, he touched her “between and on her legs in a sexual manner multiple times during the Fall 2010 semester,” and also her took off campus several times, without parental or school permission, according to the complaint.
The girl says she also received several calls and text messages from Hartsock, saying phrases like, “I love you.”

After the misconduct was uncovered, Aspire embarrassed the student by sending a “statement to students and parents about the ensuing investigation, which many students knew related to [her],” according to the complaint.
She and her mother seek punitive damages against both teachers and Aspire. They are represented by Trenton Diehl with Snider, Diehl and Rasmussen in Lodi.
Aspire’s website lists Hartsock and Merritt in the 2010-11 staff directory, but neither email address given for the men is still active. There is no 2011-12 staff directory on the school’s website.
A spokesperson for the school would not comment on the employment statuses of Hartsock and Merritt.
“All Ben Holt faculty and staff are committed to ensuring that our school is a safe and secure environment for all students and families,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “The health, safety and well-being of our students is our No. 1 priority. Due to ongoing litigation we cannot comment any further.

Teen Hoodlums Risk Jail to Protect Kids From Pedophile

How’s this for the weirdest sentence you’ll read all day? A set of teen burglars is a California town’s new heroes! Weird, yes. But they just got a pedophile off the street. Anyone who has the chutzpah to walk into a police department and admit, “I broke into So-and-So’s place, and I’m here to tell you because the dude’s got a place full of kiddie porn” deserves a little break on the whole “criminals are the scourge of society” shtick.

The story goes that the teens were up to no good when they broke into the barn of 54-year-old Kraig Stockard. They grabbed what they thought were 50 blank CDs and took off for parts unknown. But then they put them into a computer and found a whole load of really naughty, dirty, filthy sicko stuff.

Now here’s where it gets good. They took them straight to the cops, and Stockard is facing a raft of child pornography possession charges.

Good for the kids!

It may not seem like much, but we’re talking about teenagers here. They could have just said, “Man! Gross!” smashed the CDs, and moved on. In fact, I seem to remember enjoying smashing things a lot more when I was that age (and I didn’t think about having to clean up all the pieces). Instead they faced up to doing something really wrong in order to achieve a greater good.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

They got a pervert who hurts kids off the streets. Because even if all Stockard was doing was sitting at his own home filling up computers and discs with these images, he was part of the system that creates demand for these images. The higher the demand, the more kids are abused and forced to appear in these images. It’s a sick cycle, and two teenagers who started the day as the kind of losers who would break into a barn to steal CDs ended it as heroes.

So far the kids aren’t being charged, although it’s up to the DA. Do you think they should get a break?

Former altar boy suing claiming he was abused by priest

Kevin O’Donnell died a few months after being released from jail in late 1998 for convictions involving attacks on children spanning 50 years.

Now a former altar boy is suing for unspecified damages those he claims are responsible.

The victim, known only as XYZ, has lodged a writ in the Supreme Court claiming he was sexually abused between 1988 and 1992 at a Sacred Heart primary school in Oakleigh and as an altar boy in the Sacred Heart parish, Oakleigh.

Court documents claim O’Donnell abused the victim while providing religious instruction and pastoral care at the school and while a priest in the parish.

He is suing the former school principal, Noreen Harrison, and the Catholic diocese of Melbourne, which owned the school and the parish.

Airdrie pedophile sentenced to two years

An Airdrie father has been sentenced to two years in prison after sexually assaulting his daughter’s seven-year-old friend on a camping trip in June 2008 in Kananaskis Country.

The 45-year-old was given probation for another two years subsequent to his sentence. He will also be a registered sex offender for the rest of his life.

While camping, the victim came to sleep in the trailer of her friend. There, the man committed a major sexual assault on her. She pretended to be asleep. The next day she informed her mother of what took place.

The man, who lived in Willowbrook, will be a registered sex offender for life and must submit a DNA sample to police.

Crown prosecutor Doug Simpson pressed for a three-year sentence, while defence lawyer Karen Molle said it didn’t warrant such a penalty.

Hasidic Group Warns Of Increased Pedophilia Risk

Now that homosexuals can get married in New York, pedophilia is on the rise, says a fringe Hasidic group in Brooklyn that’s launching an “awareness campaign” to save the children from gay married molesters. The Hasidic watchdog blog Failed Messiah, which recently broke news about a series of Yiddish street signs telling women to step aside for men, reports that the group wants signs put up in all-male mikvehs warning of the dangers.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

In a press release announcing the free signs, the group, vaguely dubbed the Jewish Political Action Committee [JPAC], asserts that “since the gay marriage bill in New York was introduced, there has been a surge of gay attacks against youngsters in New York.” Of course, you won’t hear about it in the mainstream media… or any media for that matter, because these gay marriage-fueled attacks have only happened in the twisted minds of whoever’s producing these signs. Nevertheless, the blogger behind Failed Messiah gamely tries to reason with the group, G-d bless his little heart. Here’s his futile email exchange with JPAC:
FM: Statistically the vast majority of pedophiles are male and STRAIGHT. Gays molest children at about the same rate that heterosexuals do. Do you think you have an obligation to the Jewish community to check your facts before you go public? Or do you think the shock value of what many call your stupidity outweighs that obligation?
JPAC: But this is going into mikvehs where there are only males
FM: That isn’t the point. Most pedophiles are not gay, even though they molest boys.
JPAC: The issue is molestation against boys by men be they gay or bi but its still a gay act and very serious
FM: Doctors and scientists have shown that it has nothing to do with homosexuality.
JPAC: Its an awareness issue for many youngsters who may fall victim to molesters. Yes there are girls attacked by men but not in a mikveh. These signs are meant to educate boys and more important scare off adult molesters.

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman and Upper Dublin Township Police Chief Terrence Thompson announced the arrest of Burt Philip Ludin, 51, of the Willow Grove section of Upper Dublin, Friday on charges of involuntary deviate sexual Intercourse, indecent assault, dissemination of sexual materials to minors, unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of minors, and related offenses.

On Aug. 17, 2010, a 19-year-old male told Upper Dublin Police that he was sexually assaulted by Burt Ludin on multiple occasions over several years, according to a press release from the district attorney’s office. The male said that at the age of 11, during a sleep over at Ludin’s home, Ludin showed him pornography and masturbated in front of him. Ludin continued to show him pornography on several occasions until the age of 13 when the male was alone with Ludin either at Ludin’s home or at other locations. On several occasions, the male told policer, Ludin touched him inappropriately and had the victim touch him in an inappropriate manner.

TSA workers seeking ‘secret’ security clearance face new background checks

NEWARK — Hundreds of Transportation Security Administration employees have until today to provide information for a renewed background check under an agency requirement that they have national security clearance.
The requirement is intended to ensure that supervisors and screeners who could have direct contact with terror threats are authorized to receive classified information.
But some Newark employees have questioned the cost-effectiveness of conducting costly background checks in order to grant a relatively high “secret” level of clearance to mid- and even low-level employees.
“Essentially, we’re screening passengers and baggage,” said one TSA employee in Newark, who requested anonymity because employees there have been told not to talk to reporters. “Does that really make it necessary to have secret clearance?”
TSA employees had to submit equally extensive background information when first applying for their jobs, though not for the purpose of being granted security clearance. Since then, employees say foreclosures, high credit card debt and other financial problems many of them incurred due to the recession could bar them from receiving clearance, and cost them their jobs.
For the past two years, the TSA has been quietly working to clear supervisors, managers, and screeners across the country. The screeners involved, known as behavior detection officers, or BDO’s, move about airline terminals, observing passengers for suspicious behavior and sometimes speaking to them directly.

Passengers wait in a TSA checkpoint line in Terminal C at Newark Liberty International Airport in early May. TSA employees must provide information for renewed background checks by today in order to gain national security clearance.
The “secret” clearance level sought for TSA employees would allow them to receive information whose unauthorized disclosure could cause “serious damage to the national security,” according to a TSA document attached to an email sent on Friday to about 200 Newark TSA employees on Friday ordering them to submit their background information by today. The release of less sensitive, “confidential” information could cause “damage” to national security, according to the document, while the release of highly sensitive, “top secret” information could cause “exceptionally grave damage.”
The TSA and other agencies demand financial and credit histories for security clearance checks to insure that cleared employees will not be under such intense financial stress that they are willing to take a bribe from a terrorist. As one national security official put it, “It is common practice across the government to include an individual’s finances as part of a security clearance to help determine someone’s financial stability and susceptibility to exchange security sensitive information for monetary gain.”

http://liarcatchers.com/background_checks.html

A TSA spokeswoman, Lisa Farbstein, said clearance helps screeners do a better job.
“Providing this level of security clearance allows TSA to disseminate relevant intelligence reports to enhance the ability of the frontline employees to perform their duties,” Farbstein said in a statement.
She also said the agency is well aware of the tough times employees have faced.
“We are sensitive to the current economic climate and work with employees to adjudicate these cases using common sense and the totality of the circumstances,” Farbstein said.
Michael Donovan, a regional director for the Federal Managers Association, a trade group with a chapter founded by TSA supervisors in Newark, said it was “not unusual to have some federal clearance requirement for federal employees.” But Donovan said the reaction to the clearance requirement was understandable.
“What this really is, is a fear of the unknown,” he said. “Fear that any new financial problems they’ve had could cost them their jobs.”

DFS city manager re-hire still on track despite pending background check

DeFuniak Springs city council members say they’re still on-track to hire new city manager Mike Standley next Monday.

Even though a background check may not be completed by then.

Some residents were already upset the council agreed to hire Mike Standley last month, without interviewing him, checking his references, or even performing background or credit checks.

Kast week, city officials decided to request all that, even though Standly’s contract has been prepared.

http://liarcatchers.com/background_checks.html

DeFuniak Springs council members were prepared to offer Mike Standley a contract Monday night, making him the new city manager, but mayor Harold Carpenter announced he’s refusing to sign the contract.

“I’ll give a reason at the appropriate time.”

Council member Mac Work made the motion to have Mayor Pro-Tem Henry Hennis sign the contract.

The motion passed 4-to-1, with Hennis voting against it, but Standley’s hiring still isn’t a done deal.

DeFuniak Springs Police Chief Mark Weeks said he wouldn’t rush Standley’s background check, which council members recently agreed to perform.

“A day and a half is not enough time to complete it,” said weeks.

“Why hasn’t it been completed?” said City Attorney Clayton Adkinson

“I just told you. He’s still working on it,” said Weeks.

In the end, the council decided to continue with Standley’s hiring.

Even though the background check is still pending, he is scheduled to begin as new city manager on next Monday.

Standley was the DeFuiniak Springs city manager for 21-years, before abruptly resigning in 2005, without given an explanation.

Council members cited his previous employment as reason for waiving the interview, and checking references, background and credit.

Council members are also trying to waive a requirement that Standley live in DeFuniak Springs, because he’d lose money selling his home in Freeport.

The first reading passed Monday.
