Identity Theft DMV Warns Drivers Posting IDs on Social Media

While a teen sharing a photo of themselves behind the wheel with their new license to drive may seem harmless, the state is warning that it can put individuals at risk for identity theft.

 http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

The state is warning drivers, particularly teens, to be conscious of what they post on social media websites, specifically regarding photos of their newly-obtained permits and driver licenses.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) issued a warning to drivers about the risk of identity theft from posting images of their permits and licenses. It said that the sensitive information on DMV identification documents, including a driver address, date of birth, and signature, make it easy for any social media user to steal a victim’s identity. “This, in turn, can result in a lifetime of compromised credit and financial ruin,” the warning read.

“Passing a driver’s test is a very exciting time in a young person’s life and DMV understands why teens are excited to show off their permits and licenses,” said DMV executive deputy commissioner Terri Egan in the release. “Just don’t make your personal information public in the process. Having your identity stolen and your privacy compromised is not a good way to celebrate getting your driver license.”

According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, a non-profit organization founded to provide victim assistance and consumer education, victims whose identity is compromised from driver license information most often discover trouble when they find unexplained traffic violations appearing on their driving records.

Motorists who have evidence that another person has a driver license, registration document, or title certificate in their name, or evidence that another person used their identity and DMV ID number for fraudulent purposes, should request a Report for Unauthorized Use form (FI-17) from a DMV call center or a DMV office.

Evidence can include traffic tickets, forged personal checks or documents that contain the DMV ID number from the motorist’s driver license, learner permit, or non-driver ID. DMV’s Division of Field Investigation (DFI) will acknowledge receipt of the report and determine if there has been any license activity under the motorist’s name in New York state.

If someone believes their identity has been stolen or their private information has been compromised, DFI suggests filing a report with the local law enforcement agency and notifying all banks, financial institutions, creditors, and each of the three major credit bureaus that their identification documents have been lost or stolen.

DFI also advises to periodically obtain and review a copy of your credit report, maintain a journal to record information, keep copies of all police reports and correspondence concerning this matter and be alert for indications that someone may be using your identity such as receiving mailings from government agencies (such as DMV suspension notices) or suspicious contacts (phone calls from retail outlets granting “instant credit,” etc.).

Victims can also contact the Federal Trade Commission Identity Theft hotline at (877) 438-4338.

Additionally, motorists can monitor their driving record periodically for any unauthorized transactions by ordering an abstract at their local DMV office.

Private Detective: Two Men Shot in Wolfe County

Two men were shot Sunday morning along a Wolfe County road. Both of them are said to be recovering as investigators continue searching for those responsible.

“I’m really concerned about it because I have three children,” said neighbor Judy Hensley.

The shooting happened along Quillins Chapel Road near Campton.

“It’s usually a quiet neighborhood, nothing really happens. Everybody is good neighbors,” said Hensley.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

But those neighbors woke up to gunfire just before 9:30 Sunday morning. The sheriff’s department says two men in their mid-30’s parked their car just off of route 1653 and were standing outside of their car. That’s when investigators say two other men in a red truck pulled up and started shooting.

One of the victims was shot in his leg and the other man was shot in the hip. The sheriff’s department called for two helicopters to fly each of the victims, but both services declined due to weather conditions. Both men were taken to Kentucky River Medical Center in Jackson for treatment.

Meanwhile, those living on the area remain alert.

“I’ll keep the children in and of course keep my doors locked during the day and night until they’re caught,” said Hensley.

The victims say they do not know the shooters. Anyone with any information on this case is asked to call police.

Identity Theft FL Man Sentenced For Scam

A Florida man who stole the identities of 52 people in a scheme to activate and sell smartphones was sentenced Wednesday to 11 to 23 months jail, authorities in Bucks County announced.

According to information from the Bucks County District Attorney’s office, Jeffrey Francois, 29, of Miami, pleaded guilty to 52 counts of identity theft and 52 counts of conspiracy.

Both crimes are third-degree felonies, according to authorities.

Bensalem Township police charged Francois after discovering him and another suspect at the Comfort Inn on Lincoln Highway in June. The pair had a bag of new iPhone 6 smartphones and paperwork bearing identifying information of the victims, the District Attorney’s office said.

The personal information included names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses and email addresses, according to authorities.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

“Francois told police in an interview that he purchases other people’s identifying information from someone over the internet, and then uses the information to create and activate cell phone accounts for the new smartphones. He and Destine told police that they then sell the activated phones, typically for $100 to $200 per phone,” a statement from the District Attorney’s office said.

Bucks County Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Byrne, who prosecuted the case, told the judge that all of the personal information possessed by Francois and Destine belonged to people working as attorneys or chiropractors.

According to the District Attorney’s office, Francois told the judge that he had come to Bucks County “to see if I could make a little money” from the scheme, but that police had intervened before he had a chance to sell any phones here.

Byrne credited Bensalem police detectives Michael Moretti and Brian Oliverio with doing “a phenomenal job investigating this case. Without the hard work of the Bensalem Township Police Department, this outcome would not have been possible.”

The second defendant, Daniel Phillipe Destine, 27, pleaded guilty to identical charges in November and is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 9.
