A teenage boy and his mother are dead following a tragic domestic situation Friday that started at their Kentucky home and ended with a traffic stop on Interstate 75 near Middletown.

The Warren County Coroner’s Office confirmed Kim Thomas, 34, of Mayfield, Ky., was found deceased in the back of her ex-boyfriend Terry Froman’s white SUV near mile marker 31 on northbound I-75. She was found naked and bloody, and likely was shot multiple times, Deputy Coroner Doyle Burke said. It is unclear when she died, but an autopsy will be performed Saturday to determine that, he said.

Police also found Froman, 41, of Illinois, inside the vehicle suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to Atrium Medical Center in Middletown for treatment, and later into police custody.

Kentucky authorities say Froman abducted Thomas from her Mayfield home, and when her 17-year-old son tried to intervene, Froman shot him twice, killing him. Graves County Sheriff Dewayne Redmon said friends of Thomas went to her home around 10 a.m. to check on her after she did not report to work. They found her 17-year-old son Michael “Eli” Mohney lying on the living room floor with two gunshot wounds, and they immediately called police.

There were signs of a struggle, Redmon said.

“What we believe, apparently the son intervened and tried to protect his mother, and it cost him his life,” the sheriff told our news partner WCPO 9 On Your Side.

Murder and kidnapping charges have been filed against Froman, according to Redmon. More charges may be pending in Ohio.

Prior to that call, the Kentucky State Police and the Paducah Police Department were investigating the possible abduction of a white female at a convenience store on the south side of Paducah, Ky., Redmon said. Paducah police viewed a video of a naked female, believed to be Thomas, getting out of a white 2004 GMC Yukon, that fit the description of Froman’s SUV, and being forced to get back inside the vehicle.

Meanwhile, another call had been placed to the Kentucky State Police dispatch that Froman had been to his mother’s house in Paducah covered in blood. He was “very uncooperative in telling his mother what he had been involved in,” Redmon said in a news release.

Kentucky authorities put out a nationwide broadcast to be on the lookout for a white SUV driven by Froman, who was believed to have abducted Thomas. Kentucky and Ohio law enforcement tracked Froman’s location through his cell phone. An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper spotted the vehicle at 12:59 p.m. and a traffic stop was initiated at 1:13 p.m., according to the highway patrol. When the trooper tried to pull over the SUV, Froman drove for about two miles before pulling over at about 1:17 p.m.

Within a minute of Froman stopping, troopers heard at least one gunshot.

“When troopers exited their vehicle, they heard shots fired coming from within the vehicle,” said Lt. Craig Cvetan, of the highway patrol. “Troopers took up position and waited for additional personnel to arrive before approaching the vehicle.”

They found Froman injured from a single gunshot and Thomas deceased inside of the vehicle. Froman was taken to the hospital at 1:40 p.m. with non-life threatening injuries, according to authorities.

Troopers never fired their weapons, Cvetan said.

The shooting investigation shut down northbound I-75 between Ohio 63 and Ohio 122 until 5:30 p.m. Friday, snarling traffic. Some drivers were stuck in traffic so long, they ran out of gas.

Sandi Julifs, of Whithamsville, was stuck in traffic for more than two hours on her way to Fort Wayne, Ind. She was shocked to learn that a shooting was the reason for her delay.

“That’s horrible,” she said. “Really sad. Sad that anybody would shoot somebody.”

Mohney attended Mayfield High School. Students formed prayer circles after learning of the shooting, and grief counselors and youth ministers were brought to the school, school district spokeswoman Kim Hamby told WCPO.

“Eli and Kim are with all the other people who have gone on before. They were Christians, they had accepted Christ,” said Mohney’s great uncle Dennis Thomas. “Sometimes I look at things, when God reaches down … and sort of plucks him a rose. And we’ll get through it that way.”

The investigation is continuing by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Graves County Sheriff’s Office and the Kentucky State Police

The Laurel County Sheriff’s department is conducting an investigation attempting to locate a man that has been reported missing.

The missing man is identified as Brian Winberry, 27, of London.

He was last seen wearing camouflage pants. a camouflage shirt, and a black cap. He was last spotted near Pine Top Road, approximately half a mile from Russel Dyche Memorial Hwy.

The subject was reportedly dropped off in that location to go ginseng hunting and has not been seen in 24 hours.

This subject has been entered into the NCIC nationwide system as a missing person. Investigation is continuing.

A third arrest has been made in connection to the shooting death of a toddler who was killed while on the porch of a home in Louisville last month.

19-year-old William McLemore was arrested Wednesday night and charged with 11 counts of complicity to murder.

Michael Dunn, 24, and Trey Anderson, 20, were arrested last week and charged with murder, attempted murder and wanton endangerment.

All three are charged in connection to the shooting death of 1-year-old Ne’riah Miller who was gunned down last month while she was being held by her mother on their front porch on Aug. 27. Her mother was injured in the shooting, but survived.

Not many details have been released about the case or the men’s roles or motive.

The family of 16-month-old Ne’riah Miller said they were receiving death threats due to increased police presence in the neighborhood since the shooting.

A jury has found a man guilty in the 2013 death of a Whitley County man.

Samuel Plotnick will serve eight years on a second degree manslaughter charge in the death of Jimmy Peace.

Police say Plotnick attacked the 55-year-old in Dec. 2012. Peace was taken to the University of Kentucky Hospital where he died of head and internal injuries.

Plotnick was originally charged with assault, but that charge was upgraded to murder once Peace died.

Plotnick is set to be formally sentenced on Oct. 6.

Two men accused in a 2008 murder pleaded not guilty in a Jessamine County courtroom Friday morning.

A judge said the case of 34-year-old David Peel and 46-year-old Odis Henson will stay together.

Both men are accused in the death of 45-year-old Mark Dunn who was found dead inside his burning pickup truck along Hunters Ferry Road in a remote part of Jessamine County in May of 2008. Officials said Dunn was shot before his truck caught fire.

Peel is charged with murder, arson, robbery, and evidence tampering. Henson is charged with arson second degree and tampering with physical evidence.

They were arrested on Wednesday, more than 6 years after the death.

Dunn’s sister, Anna Long, says Peel was an acquaintance of Dunn’s and would visit his store frequently. She describes the indictments as a step toward justice.

A pre-trial conference for both accused is set for Nov. 14.

A North Platte man has been charged with insurance fraud after the discovery of his car in a Lincoln County canal.

The North Platte Telegraph says (http://bit.ly/1oiZVRJ ) 31-year-old Josh Salisbury was arrested. Online court records say he’s already bonded out of jail. A public phone listing for Salisbury couldn’t be found. Online court records don’t list the name of his attorney in the case.

Police say Salisbury reported June 28 that the car was parked in front of his home when it was stolen. The car was pulled from the canal on Aug. 11. Police spokesman Rodney Brown says investigators have learned that Salisbury drove the car into the canal and later collected $27,500 in insurance.

Salisbury’s next hearing is scheduled for Sept. 18.

An elderly Lexington woman was attacked in her home when she refused to give money to a woman at her door.

It happened on Floral Park. Thomas Coffey, a friend of the the victim, was on the phone with her when it happened. Police say an elderly woman opened her door to a stranger who pushed her way inside the home.

Coffey says the woman who lives at the home is his late friend’s mother.

“While I was on the phone with her on the way over here I heard her saying, ‘you’re not gonna take my money,’ and the girl was hollering back, ‘give me that money, give me that money,'” says Coffey

Once inside, police say the suspect tried to get her hands on some money-but the victim wouldn’t allow it.

“She hung on for dear life to that money and I love for and I love her for her strength,” says Coffey.

Getting nowhere with the cash, police say the thief left. Once crews arrived, the victim was taken to the hospital for hand injury, which police say resulted from the struggle.

Three teenagers are accused of attacking a woman after asking her for a ride.

On Monday night, a woman in her 50s stopped at an Elizabethtown Dollar General to run a quick errand. As she was leaving, detectives say she was approached by three teens asking her where she was headed and if she would mind giving them a ride to their friend’s house.

She agreed.

It was not long before the woman realized she had made a terrible mistake. Investigators say the woman’s passengers started to get violent, hitting her in the head.

Luckily, she was able to stay alert and turn down a street where she knew her relative lived. Her head was bleeding severely.

“It was bleeding real bad and she was just crying and screaming, hollering ‘Why? Why? Why?'” says her relative Bennie Ray Logsdon.

Once deputies arrived, it didn’t take long to find the suspects.

“They were all located separately between state police and deputies and they were brought back in interviewed,” says Detective Sergeant Rex Allaman.

Officials say they did admit to being in the white Grand Am. 18-year-old Cody Norman, 18-year-old Robert Beard, and a 17-year-old boy were all arrested.

We’re learning more about a murder-suicide in Madison County that left two men dead. Investigators said an elderly man shot his son-in-law, then turned the gun on himself.

It happened Thursday afternoon at a home on Ole Daniel Boone Road.

Investigators said Frederick Graeter, 73, and his son-in-law Steven Bryan, 55, are sadly both dead after Thursday’s shooting. Kentucky State Police said Graeter took the life of his son-in-law, before killing himself.

It’s a tragedy neighbors said they can’t comprehend. “Why? You know, why would he do that? Especially family members. You don’t take another man’s life,” said Johnny Johnson, who lives down the street from the crime scene.

Greater’s daughter said it was all because of an argument at her father’s home. She said she was on the phone with her brother-in-law when her father told him to leave just before 2p.m. Then, words were said and eventually Greater’s daughter said she heard gunshots.

“An elderly person who lives in the home shot his son-in-law, fatally killing him before turning the firearm on himself,” Trooper Robert Purdy with Kentucky State Police.

Greater’s daughter said family was home during the shooting. Kentucky State Police is interviewing them as part of the investigation, but reliving the horror isn’t easy. “Obviously they are pretty distraught. I think it was a very traumatic thing that happened in the home,” said Purdy.

It was traumatic for family, and for people who live nearby. “It’s kind of shocking that it would happen this close to home,” said Johnson. While he didn’t know his neighbors well, he said he feels their pain.

“It’s tragic, you know, I hate it for the family. I don’t wish nothing bad on nobody. I just hope the family gets through it alright,” said Johnson.

As the family mourns and says goodbye in the most difficult way, neighbors want to let them know they aren’t alone. “My thoughts and prayers are out to them and I hope they get over this hump,” said Johnson.

Investigators said although other people were in the home during the shooting, no one else was hurt.

The bodies of five missing children from Lexington County have been found in Alabama, after law enforcement officials say their father confessed to killing them.

The remains were discovered around 4:45 p.m. Eastern Time in Wilcox County, Alabama. It’s not clear yet how the children died.

The children’s father, Timothy Ray Jones Jr., was arrested last Saturday in Raleigh, Mississippi at a driver’s license checkpoint.

Smith County, Mississippi Sheriff Charlie Crumpton says Jones appeared to be under the influence when officers inspected his vehicle.

When deputies ran Jones tags after his arrest, they got a hit in the missing person’s database about the children. He was then arrested for DUI and possession of a controlled substance, and deputies in Smith County called South Carolina officials.

Lexington County deputies, along with State Law Enforcement Division and FBI agents, then traveled to Mississippi to take part in the investigation.

Crumpton says Jones confessed to officers late Monday night, and led them to where the bodies were, which was an area 10 miles east of Camden, Alabama. The bodies were found in five separate garbage bags, Crumpton says.

Officers say they have not yet determined a motive.

The children’s mother reported the children–who are between the ages of one and eight–missing back on September 3rd. According to officers, the mother, who’s divorced from Jones, said she had been unable to contact her ex-husband.

The husband is the children’s primary legal guardian. Neighbors told deputies that Jones said he was moving with his children from his home near Lexington to another state.

Lexington County Sheriff Lewis McCarty says charges are pending against Jones. The county coroner is working to transport the remains back to Lexington County to be positively identified.
