Arson Investigation Suspect’s Wife Was in Home

According to court documents, a man charged with arson lit a house on fire with his estranged wife inside.

Arson investigators charged Charles Goldsberry, 47, with arson on Monday. According to court documents, witnesses spotted him crawling from underneath the porch of a home on East Second Street last Thursday night moments before the two people inside spotted flames. Goldsberry’s wife and another person escaped the home, but Lexington firefighter Jeremy Bruner suffered injuries when debris fell on him.

“It’s upsetting anytime anyone sets a fire because it puts us at risk from the time the tone goes off to the time we get back in the station where we’re safe,” Lexington Fire Department Batt.Chief Mark Blankenship said. “But not only the fact that a firefighter was injured, but you also jeopardize the two occupants of the house.”

Bruner suffered cracked ribs.

Investigators say the fire apparently stemmed from a domestic dispute.

Goldsberry faces arson and wanton endangerment charges.

Arson Investigation Lexington Duplex Fire Reported

The Lexington Fire Department has determined the fire that broke out at a vacant duplex unit on Wilson Avenue, off Elm Tree Lane, Monday morning was intentionally set, fire officials said.

Firefighters said they saw heavy smoke and flames coming out the second floor of the unit when they arrived around 5:30 a.m. Monday morning.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

Fire officials said the fire started in the vacant unit, where they said it appeared someone had just moved out from. They say the damage was mostly contained to the vacant side of the building, but that it was extensive.

Donica Sweat lives in the unit next door in the same duplex with her three children. She said she smelled smoke, but couldn’t find the source. A neighbor knocked on her door and told her about the fire.

“My first instinct was to grab my kids,” she said. “I ran upstairs grabbed my kids and came out the house, moved my car.”

Officials have cut the source of power to Sweat’s home even though there’s not much damage on that side of the duplex. Sweat says she’ll be living in a family member’ house for the time being, while the fire department continues their investigation.

There were no reported injuries.

Investigators ask anyone with information regarding this fire to contact the Fire Investigations Bureau at Ph 859-231-5672 or leave a tip at arsontios@lexingtonky.gov.

Cold Case 23 Year Old Murder Case Remains A Mystery

In 2010, while visiting his daughter’s grave, Glen Brooks said that giving up looking for Valeri’s killer just wasn’t an option.

“I won’t let myself think that, because when you start thinking like that you’ve given up,” he said.

Sadly, Mr. Brooks died last February, never knowing who the monster was who stabbed Valeri more than 30 times after abducting her from a Versailles Thornton’, then dumping her nearly decapitated body on a remote road near Nonesuch, 23 years ago.

http://liarcatchers.com/cold_cases.html

A suspect was never officially named, though police took a look at another man’s DNA after serial killer Glen Rodgers claimed to have killed Valeri. There hasn’t been word on the results.

“My husband’s gut feeling, and mine too along with the family’s, is that it was someone who knew the area. You just don’t drive up to that area by mindlessly driving around,” said Valeri’s step-mom Carolyn Brooks.

Carolyn believes the investigation was botched from the beginning, but hopes her late husband now knows the truth.

“There’s a vicious killer out there someplace,” she said. “I’d be surprised if he hadn’t struck again.”
