Private Detective 4 KY Individuals Sentenced for Roles in Kidnapping

LONDON, KY—Four Harlan County, Kentucky relatives were sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove for their roles in kidnapping and assaulting Kevin Pennington, a gay man. David Jason Jenkins (“Jason”), 39, received 30 years in prison; Anthony Ray Jenkins, 22, 17 years in prison; Mable Ashley Jenkins (“Ashley”), 20, 100 months in prison; and Alexis LeeAnn Jenkins, 20, eight years in prison.

In October 2012, a federal jury in London, Kentucky, convicted Jason Jenkins and Anthony Jenkins of kidnapping and conspiracy charges related to the April 4, 2011 assault of Pennington. The jury acquitted the men of violating the sexual orientation provision of the Matthew Shepard James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Testimony at trial established that the two men, who are cousins, carried out the crime with help from their relatives—Ashley Jenkins and Alexis Jenkins, who both pleaded guilty prior to trial to aiding and abetting kidnapping and aiding and abetting the hate crime assault against Pennington. Both women testified against the defendants. The women’s guilty pleas to federal hate crime charges constituted the first federal convictions in the nation under the sexual orientation provision of the Matthew Shepard James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

The evidence at trial established that the four relatives planned in advance of the assault to kidnap Pennington, take him to a remote location, and beat him to death. After luring Pennington by false pretenses into a truck driven by Anthony Jenkins, the group drove Pennington up a deserted mountain road into Kingdom Come State Park, where they dragged Pennington into the road and beat him.

The evidence also established that Pennington escaped while the two men were searching in the back of the truck for a tire iron to use to kill Pennington. Pennington ran off the road and threw himself over a ledge, where he hid behind a rock until the group finally gave up searching for him and drove away. Pennington staggered part-way down the mountain, where he found a ranger shack, broke a window, and called 911.

Ashley and Alexis Jenkins both testified that they and the men had agreed in advance to lure Pennington into the truck, drive him to a deserted area, and beat him because of his sexual orientation. The women also testified that during the beating, they all used anti-gay slurs and yelled “Kill the f—t!” and that the group intended to kill Pennington.

“Justice imposes a heavy price on those who engage in the sort of gratuitous violence that led to this prosecution,” said Kerry B. Harvey, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky. “The defendants’ crimes were brutal and cruel. They fully deserve the sentences delivered by the court. The message is clear—our society will not tolerate such horrific conduct. The team of dedicated professionals who investigated and successfully prosecuted this case are to be congratulated for their fine work. We also thank our state and local partners who played an important role in achieving a just result in this matter.”

“We are pleased that this matter has been successfully resolved and that justice has been done,” said Perrye K. Turner, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Kentucky. “We feel the length of the sentences sufficiently reflects the seriousness of these violent acts.”

This case was investigated by Special Agents Anthony Sankey and Mike Brown with the FBI and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Hydee Hawkins from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Kentucky and Trial Attorney Angie Cha from the Civil Rights Division.

An FBI agent reported finding child pornography on a computer and in a video camera belonging to Williams.

Private Detective Websites Posting Mug Shots and Extortion

The IC3 has received hundreds of complaints from individuals claiming they located their mug shots on 20 different websites, all of which allegedly use similar business practices. Some victims reported they were juveniles at the time of the arrests and their records were sealed. Therefore, their information should not be available to the public. Others stated the information posted on the sites was either incorrect or blatantly false.

Complainants who requested to have their mug shot removed, had to provide a copy of their driver’s license, court record and other personal identifying information. However, providing such information puts those at risk for identify theft.

Complainants were also subject to paying a fee to have their mug shot removed. Although they paid the fee, some of the mug shots were not removed. If they were removed, the mug shots appeared on similar websites.

If the victim threatened to report the websites for unlawful practice, the websites’ owners threatened to escalate the damaging information against the victim.

Private Detective Attackers Use Skype and Other IM Apps to Spread Trojan

Users receiving shortened URLs in Skype instant messages, or similar IM platforms, should be wary of a new trojan, called Liftoh.

So far, it has primarily infected users in Latin America, said Rodrigo Calvo, a researcher at Symantec.

When targeted, victims receive a message in Spanish containing a shortened URL. The messages appear as if they are coming from someone on the user’s Skype contact list who is linking to a photo. If clicked, the link redirects users to 4shared.com, which is hosting a URL, which initiates a weaponized zip file containing Liftoh. The trojan is capable of downloading additional malware.

The malicious URLs have been clicked on more than 170,000 times, according to Symantec.

Fraud Investigation Tech Support Calls from Wire Transfer Company

The IC3 has recently received complaints from businesses regarding telephone calls from individuals claiming to be with a wire transfer company’s tech support. One complainant reported that the wire transfer company’s name was displayed on their caller ID. The callers instructed the victims to go to a particular website to run an application which allows the caller to remotely access the victim’s computer. Once remote access was established, the victims were instructed to open their wire transfer program and log-in to their accounts, so the callers could update the system. The victims were then told to turn off their monitors, to avoid interference with the update. The victims later discovered the subjects made wire transfers to NetSpend accounts. One victim noticed something downloading onto his computer once the caller gained remote access. This made the victim suspicious, so he turned off his computer. Later, he discovered the caller had loaded $950 on a prepaid credit card from the victim’s account. Another victim reported money transfers were made to various states and individuals, but the caller reassured the victim that no transfers were actually being processed. No other details were provided.

Missing Person Nasir Alam of East Hartford, CT

The search continued into Tuesday night for 26-year-old Nasir Alam, an East Hartford man caught in the Farmington River during a flash flood.

“Oh my gosh, I hope they weren’t out there when it hit because that would have scared the heck out of me,” said Cindy Casella, Farmington.

It was a nasty thunderstorm that struck in a matter of minutes with dark clouds, strong winds, and torrential rain adding to an already swollen Farmington River. Caught in the middle of it, seven people on inter tubes with no life jackets.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“First couple of minutes no problem, but when they got down to the Collinville Bridge, which is a problem area, and that is where all seven of them ended up in the water,” said Lt. Collin Ryan, Farmington police.

A witness says he was looking out his window and heard some screaming coming from the river. He ran out and saw a girl up to her waist in the river screaming for help. He then ran back in and called 911.

“The six that made it out of the water had bumps, bruises and scrapes. They did get out of the water but refused medical treatment,” said Ryan.

Alam disappeared into the rapids. His friends never saw him come up.

Another woman disappeared in the same area just a few miles up river in New Hartford. She went missing over the weekend.

“When you look out there and you see the river and you know someone is out there, it’s unbelievable. And, it’s sad to know there will be guys out there who are putting their life on the line to have to find them. You have to think about the family right now,” said Ryan Goralski, Farmington.

Firefighters say the river was even too rough to send out one of their rescue boats. They would have had to shoot a line across the river and send a man out on that line.

Alam’s family has been notified and Farmington police ask anyone with information to contact them at 860-675-2400.

The search will resume Wednesday morning if conditions improve.

Missing Person Adrienne Salinas of Tempe, AZ

The search continues for a missing 19-year-old Tempe woman who disappeared early Saturday morning. Monday night, Tempe police and MCSO searched Tempe Town Lake for Adrienne Salinas.

“One of the things we want to rule out is any possibility of her being here in the lake,” said Tempe Police Sgt. Mike Pooley. “We’re checking the lake because it was so close to where she was last seen.”

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

According to her mom, Adrienne was taking a psychology class at Gateway Community College. She was responsible, and close to her family, so when she didn’t call her dad on Father’s Day, family and friends immediately knew something was wrong and filed a police report.

Suzanne Coss spent Monday going door to door, passing out a missing person flier with her 19-year-old daughter’s picture on it.

“She might be hurt, she can’t get to a phone, she can’t get help,” says Suzanne.

“She was upset and wanted to go talk to her boyfriend about it. Along the way there she hit a curb, her tires popped, she tried to come back home on the flats and made it to that side street right over there on Roosevelt and that’s the last of it,” says roommate Shaney Duggan.

Shaney Duggan was one of the last people to see Adrienne. It was around 4:30 a.m. Saturday. Duggan says her roommate was upset and on her way to see her boyfriend.

According to police, records indicate a text from the 19-year-old’s cell phone to her boyfriend at 4:43 saying “coming over.” At 5:07 the cell phone died. There was no further communication from Adrienne.

“Where is she? That’s what we are trying to find out, where is she, where are you, is she ok, is she hurt, did she eat, is she cold,” says Pam Coss, Adrienne’s aunt.

Her family is desperate for answers, hopeful someone saw something that will bring Adrienne home.

The white Buick LaSabre that Adrienne abandoned is in police custody. A spokesperson tells us there’s no sign foul play took place inside the car.

Detectives spoke with the missing teen’s boyfriend. They tell us he is cooperating and is not considered a suspect at this time. Tempe police also tell us they are looking into every possible scenario.

They began searching the lake about 4 p.m. Monday. Dive teams brought in a sonar system and are planning to search into the night.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Tempe Police.
