Cold Case 41 Yr Old NJ Missing Person Case Solved

A 41-year-old New Jersey missing person’s case has been solved as a result of an ongoing investigation to identify the unnamed victims of serial killer John Wayne Gacy.

Relatives of 16-year-old Steven Soden contacted the Cook County Sheriff’s Office in 2011 after hearing about Sheriff Tom Dart’s efforts to identify the unnamed Gacy victims and suggested that Soden may be one of them, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

http://liarcatchers.com/cold_cases.html

Soden, who lived at an orphanage, was last seen alive on April 3, 1972 running away with another boy, 12-year-old Donald Caldwell, from the Bass River Camp Grounds in Burlington County, New Jersey during a group camping trip.

Neither boy was ever heard from again.

Relatives thought that maybe Soden headed to Chicago, where his biological father lived, and may have come into contact with Gacy.

A DNA sample was taken from Soden’s sister. There was no genetic association between her and any of the unidentified Gacy victims.

Her genetic profile was uploaded to the Combined DNA Index System. In December 2012, her profile matched that of unidentified human skeletal remains found 13 years ago in New Jersey.

The remains were discovered in the woods in Burlington County in April 2000 – not far from where Soden was last seen.

Additional genetic testing with other family members was performed by the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification.

Investigators concluded the remains are that of Steven Soden.

His cause of death remains undetermined.

Gacy killed 33 teenage boys and young men in Chicago from 1972 to 1978. Seven of his victims remain unidentified. He was executed for his crimes in 1994.

Fraud Investigation Northern KY Bank Employee Accused of Embezzling

A federal grand jury returned an indictment Thursday charging 34-year-old Rebecca Hatfield with bank embezzlement, 46 counts of false entries in bank records, and making a false statement.

According to the indictment, from December 2007 through August 2011, Hatfield embezzled approximately $135,700 from the Bank of Kentucky in Florence, Kentucky.

The indictment further alleges that Hatfield intentionally made false entries into the accounting records and falsely told an FBI agent that she had not embezzled the money and suspected that another bank employee may have done so.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Kerry B. Harvey, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and Perrye Turner, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), jointly made the announcement today.

The investigation preceding the indictment was conducted by the FBI. The indictment was presented to the grand jury by Assistant United States Attorney Christopher L. Nasson.

Hatfield’s appearance before the United States District Court has not yet been set. If convicted, Hatfield faces a minimum of probation and a maximum prison sentence of 30 years. However, any sentence following conviction would be imposed by the court after consideration of the United States Sentencing Guidelines and the federal statute governing the imposition of sentences.

The indictment of a person by a grand jury is an accusation only, and that person is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Identity Theft One of the Fastest Growing Crimes

Identity theft is a major problem.

You likely know someone still trying to get their good name back, as well as their credit, because of it.

All this week 9 On Your Side is tracking the crime that costs its victims billions of dollars a year.

9 On Your Side recently sat down with North Carolina’s lead prosecutor Attorney General Roy Cooper, who took some time to explain the scope of the ID theft problem and why simply losing money may not be the worst of it.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

“How easy is it nowadays for someone to steal your identity,” asked 9 On Your Side.

“Unfortunately it’s very easy,” said Attorney General Roy Cooper, (D) North Carolina.

Identity theft continues to be one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States. And as the state’s leading prosecutor, Cooper knows all too well how big a problem it’s become.

“People in North Carolina, every single day, not only are losing money to this scam, but they’re losing their good names as well,” said Cooper.

Identity theft has topped the list of consumer complaints filed with the Federal Trade Commission for more than a decade. Research from a company called ID Analytics shows there may be as many as 10,000 identity theft rings operating in the United States alone. Millions are affected across the country each year and the numbers for right here in North Carolina are staggering as well.

“As many as 300,000 cases of identity theft in North Carolina a year. It’s a continuing problem. We fight it, we’re able to make some arrests and we’re even able to work with the federal government to arrest people overseas,” said Cooper.

Identity theft is simple. An imposter obtains key pieces of what law enforcement calls PII or personal identifying information. Information such as your Social Security and driver’s license numbers and uses them for their own personal gain.

“The Social Security number is often the key to unlock your identity for a thief. We’ve worked very hard to restrict the use of Social Security numbers and the required use of them. For example, we passed laws in North Carolina to prevent companies from using the Social Security number as an identity number for you,” said Cooper.

Identity theft doesn’t just happen to individuals. Corporations and small businesses are vulnerable as well, maybe even more so.

“Small businesses often are very vulnerable to Identity thieves. You see mostly individuals who are hurt, but sometimes they’ll steal the information and the tax ID number of a business. Go and get a loan in that business name and are able to steal the identity and the good name of that business,” said Cooper.

Financial ID theft is by far the most common. According to the most recent statistics, it’s costing everyone tens of billions of dollars a year.

But still the money is lost by the business and often times those costs are passed on to consumers and consumers are stuck with someone using their good name and it’s a high level of frustration for them that can sometimes last for years.

Identity theft isn’t always just financial. Perhaps worst of all is when thieves will actually use your name and personal information when they’re arrested.

People sometimes have used other people’s identity to avoid criminal prosecution. People who are stopped and arrested for crimes give personal identification of someone else and then when they don’t show up for court, the person who had their identity stolen is arrested for a crime they never committed.

It’s scary how big a problem it’s become and how easy it is to steal your life.

Coming up Tuesday night, 9 On Your Side’s Jonathan Rodriguez will explain the different methods criminals use to steal your information.

Our weeklong coverage will end on Friday with a live phone bank so you can have any questions you may have answered, plus a shred-a-thon on Saturday. There’s more details to come on that.

Pedophile Tracking Casey County Man Arrested Again for Child Porn

For the second time in less than a year, a Casey County man has been arrested on charges related to child pornography.

Franklin G. Clark, 30, was charged on May 9 with 14 counts of distribution of matter portraying a sex performance by a minor and three counts of possession of matter portraying a sex performance by a minor. Clark, who was out of jail on bond following similar charges in August, is now being held in the Casey County Detention Center.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

The latest arrest was the result of an ongoing undercover Internet Crimes Against Children investigation by the Kentucky State Police Electronic Crime Branch. Detectives began investigating in February after they discovered a suspect sharing images of child sexual exploitation online. During the course of the investigation, it was determined that state police detectives had received child pornography from the suspect. The majority of the images depicted the sexual abuse of children who were less than 16 years of age.

The investigation resulted in the execution of a search warrant on May 9 at Clark’s residence, located in Bethelridge, Casey County. The KSP Electronic Crime Branch was assisted by troopers from KSP Post 15 in Columbia. Equipment used to view and possess child pornography was seized and taken to KSP’s Forensic Laboratory for examination.

The arrest marks the second time in less than a year that Clark has been charged with charges related to child pornography.

On August 1, 2012, Clark was charged with two counts of distribution of matter portraying a sex performance by a minor and 20 counts of possession of matter portraying a sex performance by a minor. A prior investigation resulted in the execution of a search warrant at Clark’s residence on August 1, 2012 by the KSP Electronic Crime Branch. Clark has been out of jail on bond while that court case is pending.
