Missing Person Mandy Matula of Eden Prairie, MN

Police, friends and family members continued to search Thursday night for Mandy Matula, who was last seen with David Marshall Roe, who shot himself in the head outside Eden Prairie police headquarters after being summoned to talk to a detective.

Roe was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where information on his condition was not being released Thursday night.

In the past week, Matula, of Eden Prairie, had told her family and friends that she was breaking off a relationship with Roe. Both are 24 and graduated in 2007 from Eden Prairie High School, where they were standout athletes.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

The missing woman’s father, Wayne Matula, confirmed Thursday night that his daughter was breaking up with Roe. Wayne Matula said that police investigators were at the family’s Eden Prairie home and had asked that the family not talk with reporters about the case.

Mandy Matula and Roe were last seen at Miller Park in Eden Prairie, where searchers looked for her later in the day. The Hennepin County Water Patrol also initially said they were searching nearby Mitchell Lake but changed that location shortly after 8 p.m. to Round Lake in Eden Prairie, which is in another park near Valley View and Eden Prairie Roads, according to the sheriff’s office.

Matula’s parents first reported her missing at 8:30 a.m. Thursday when she didn’t show up for her seasonal job as a city maintenance worker in Eden Prairie, according to police and a family friend. Her family last saw her about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Police believe Matula had been with Roe at Miller Park about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, said Katie Bengston, a police spokeswoman.

Matula and Roe were believed to have been traveling in his 2013 black Ford Escape with Minnesota license 802-KNA when they were at the park. Police are asking anyone with information to call Eden Prairie police at 952-949-6200.

Police said once they identified Roe as a “person of interest” in Matula’s disappearance, he had agreed to speak with an investigator.

Radio traffic from police scanners early Thursday afternoon said law enforcement vehicles followed Roe, who was alone in his SUV, until he pulled into the police station parking lot about 1:30 p.m. Officers then stayed back, shutting down the parking lot from other traffic as they watched him and realized he had a handgun. They asked that rifles be brought to the scene.

Roe, who stayed seated in his SUV, put a piece of paper in his vehicle window. Bengston said no information was being released on the paper, including whether he had written on it.

He then used both hands to hold a handgun under his chin and fired, according to police scanner reports. Officers immediately called an ambulance.

Both Roe and Matula had excelled in team sports when they attended Eden Prairie High School.

Matula was a standout fast-pitch softball pitcher, and she later graduated from University of Minnesota Duluth, where she pitched for the Bulldogs.

Roe was all-conference in football and played on the 5A state championship team and attended the University of St. Thomas for some time, where he played football. He also played basketball in high school.

Matula has worked as a seasonal maintenance worker for the city of Eden Prairie for more than six years, and she also worked at a family recreation center in Eden Prairie, Brunswick Zone XL. Martin Larson, general manager for Brunswick Zone, declined to comment Thursday.

“We’re all in shock,” one of Matula’s co-workers at Brunswick Zone XL said by phone, her voice breaking.

Pedophile Tracking Denton County, TX Clergyman Faces Charges

A senior pastor at The Church of Corinth was allegedly recorded in about two hours of audio files attempting to persuade a female juvenile to undress, read an arrest affidavit released Thursday morning.

Jeffrey Dale Williams was jailed on charges of attempted sexual performance by a child. Bond was set at $10,000.

“He tried to entice her to take her clothes off so he could see her naked body,” said Corinth police Capt. Greg Wilkerson.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

According to the affidavit, Cpl. Jason Foutch received the audio files after responding to two complaints forwarded from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services on April 3, four days after the alleged act. In the files, Williams can be heard asking the female to undress so he can see “eye candy” despite the female’s pleas asking him to stop, the affidavit read. He allegedly used a chair to block the door as he talked with the female.

In a statement released by David Fink, a spokesman for the church, The Church of Corinth was not aware of the allegations previous to the arrest of the senior pastor.

“We have no knowledge of nor any reason to suspect any inappropriate behavior,” Fink said. “We intend to and will fully investigate the allegations, and we will fully cooperate with the authorities. Our prayers go out to this family of our church.”

The victim did later corroborate the audio tape and the incident.

“Man that’s just scary,” said Melissa Lain, who went to the church on rare occasions.

Wednesday night is when Church of Corinth holds a children’s service. Pastor Williams would not have been there for that; the youth pastor runs the service.

“I’m just flabbergasted,” said a church member who identified himself only as James. “There’s something totally strange here.”

Members told News 8 that Williams has been pastor at the church for several years.

“There may be an additional victim out there,” Wilkerson said. “We’re trying to contact her now.”

Williams was being held at the Denton County Jail.

Wrongful Death Teen’s Best Friend Admitted to Her Murder

On May 1, 2013 the Skylar Neese story produced a horrific twist when one of the teen’s best friends admitted to her gruesome murder. Sixteen-year-old Rachel Shoaf admitted to stabbing the teen to death the very night she vanished. This is certainly a shocking update to an already shocking and heartbreaking case. Two teens have reportedly been charged in the murder after and Shoaf pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing the girl after she sneaked out of her parents’ home in July of 2012.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Skylar Neese was originally considered a runaway, though from the beginning speculation leaned toward foul play. It was suspicious from the beginning that she only sneaked out to spend time with friends — never to return. I even speculated once that she could have been abducted while on the way back home from meeting with her friends. It is truly a shock to nearly everyone familiar with this case that another teenage girl has confessed to her fatal stabbing murder. By the time Skylar’s body was found she was badly decomposed — a voiceless murder victim just discarded in the wilderness. Does Rachel Shoaf realize the reality of what’s been done?

What would drive a teenage girl to stab one of her best friends fatally? And what kind of person can dump a body in a wooded area and pretend like nothing ever happened? These beautiful young ladies had promising lives ahead of them, but instead both of their lives are ruined due to something that happened on one night last year. What was it that led to the fatal stabbing of Skylar Neese? Those details will hopefully come out soon.

It’s not terribly often that teenage girls murder, but when they do it is often done in groups of more than one. That is why it’s not very surprising that two people have been charged in Skylar’s death. Murderers like Christa Pike and Alyssa Bustamante were teens when they claimed the lives of their young female victims. So there are certainly cases of homicide of this nature in history. In fact, this behavior is so common that there are statistics to go with it.

More information in the Skylar Neese case won’t be released for the time being due to the sensitive nature of the case and the age of the juvenile in custody (aside from Rachel Shoaf). So this may shape up to be one of those high profile cases that grip the media. Her loved ones must be horrified.

Fraud Investigation IC3 Scam Alerts

This report, which is based upon information from law enforcement and complaints submitted to the IC3, details recent cyber crime trends and new twists to previously-existing cyber scams.

SEXTORTION SCAM

The IC3 has received numerous +complaints over the last couple of years regarding an online sextortion scam capitalizing on social media websites and technology. Contact between the subject and victim is initiated via social media websites and/or online dating websites. Once rapport has been established, victims are asked to engage in video chat where they are enticed to expose themselves in sexually compromising situations, while their images are secretly recorded. Subjects then threaten to make the videos available to all the victims’ social networking friends and other online contacts unless funds, ranging in the amounts of $50 to $300, are wired to various destinations overseas.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

INCREASE IN ONLINE FRAUDULENT GUN SALES

Criminals capitalize on current events highlighted by the media, especially when the topic draws a significant amount of attention. The IC3 often sees evidence of this via complaints. One topic in particular that has continued to receive national attention is gun legislation reform. As a result, gun sales have skyrocketed. Consumers are not only purchasing firearms in stores, but online as well. The IC3 has seen an uptick in the number of complaints recently filed reporting fraudulent advertisements for firearms. Criminals entice victims into purchasing the firearms by using photos and descriptions hijacked from online firearm ads and advertise the firearms for below market value. The majority of the type of firearm that victims were attempting to purchase was a long gun.

In order to convince the buyer the transaction is legitimate, the criminal sometimes provides the victim a copy of a military photo ID via email, which they claim is theirs. Criminals also appear to know the procedures of transferring firearms by arranging for the firearm to be delivered to the victim’s local Federal Firearm Licensee (FFL). Many of the complainants fell for the scam, losing hundreds to over a thousand dollars in each transaction.

UNAUTHORIZED BANK ACCOUNT ACCESS IN THE PAYDAY LOAN SCAM

The payday loan scam involving threats and TDoS attacks was highlighted in the February 21, 2012 Public Service Announcement titled “New Variation On Telephone Collection Scam Related To Delinquent PayDay Loans” and in the January 7, 2013 IC3 Scam Alerts.

Based on IC3 complaint information, it appears the tactics used by the subjects continue to evolve. Information revealed subjects are now making unauthorized deposits for payday loans into victims’ bank accounts. The proceeds range from $200 to $300. After the initial deposit, victims reported unauthorized withdrawals every two weeks in increments between $60 and $90. The withdrawals are applied to accrued interest only, making it impossible to pay the loan in full. Victims reported all efforts to return the unwanted loan proceeds or pay the loan in full were unsuccessful. Some reported closing their bank account and holding the loan proceeds to prevent further fraud to their account. It has yet to be determined how the subjects are obtaining the victims’ bank account information, because some of the victims claim they have never applied for a payday loan.

Insurance Fraud Bryan, TX Chiropractic Clinic Owner Convicted

The co-owner of a now-defunct Bryan chiropractic clinic faces up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to a $3 million auto insurance fraud.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release Monday that Marion Young, 42, admitted that he participated in a two-year conspiracy to defraud auto insurance companies. Authorities said Young and four others were involved in the scam, which involved recruiting alleged auto accident victims to be represented by a Bryan law firm.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

Authorities said Young used Private Chiropractic Clinic as a front to create bills for treatments that were never performed. The law firm would use the fraudulent bills to issue settlement demand letters to insurance companies, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The scheme resulted in more than $3 million in false billing claims, officials said.

Young received approximately $112,000 from the law firm during the course of the scam, according to the news release. As part of his plea agreement, he agreed to forfeit that money and pay restitution of $1.2 million to the insurance companies.

Chase Lindsey, a Bryan chiropractor involved in the scheme, pleaded guilty to engaging in conspiracy to defraud in January.

Young is set to be sentenced on Sept. 16. The three remaining defendants in the case are scheduled for trial on Sept. 24.

Identity Theft Lexington Police Ask For Help to Stop Theft Ring

The investigation involving thefts with cloned credit cards is getting more complex with each passing day. Now, Lexington Police are making another plea to the public to help identify anyone in this crime ring.

A group of crooks working together with a massive heap of cloned credit cards may have up to this point eluded authorities, but when they are caught, the consequences will be steep. “Because we’re in a situation where this is going state to state, it’s very likely we could get federal authorities involved because this is not just a Lexington case,” said Lexington Police spokesperson Sherelle Roberts. “The scope is broadening very rapidly.”

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

In Kentucky alone, thefts have happened in Lexington, Louisville, Frankfort and Versailles. Detectives have also identified crimes in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania.

Police say the thieves drive rental cars up and down Interstate 75, hitting places quickly, then getting out of town. Police say it’s not far reaching to assume they may be working as far north as Detroit and as far south as Atlanta.

“Honestly, at this point, there’s no telling how much money they’ve stolen,” said Roberts.

At a Lexington Walmart last week, cameras recorded 24 minutes of one of the female suspect’s fraudulent transactions. Police say the woman had dozens of cloned credit cards, and that she stood there buying separate $25, $50 or $100 gift cards, each time using a card with someone’s else’s bank information on it.

Police say they’ve racked up more than $50,000 in charges in Lexington alone, and if they’re not stopped, there’s no telling how high their list of victims might go.

Lexington Police say the group picks up rental cars to use in each theft, usually under fake names, then returns them, making them hard to track or trace.

If you can identify anyone in the photos, you’re asked to call Lexington Police.
