Wrongful Death Spartanburg County, SC Man Charged

A 23-year-old man has been charged with murder in the death of a teen who was missing for several months, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Wade Jermel Shippy was arrested Thursday and charged in the death of 18-year-old Antwan Devagio Bailey.

Bailey was reported missing in November 2012. He was last seen on Thanksgiving Day. His disappearance was immediately treated as suspicious because his guardian said he would never have missed a family holiday.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Sheriff Chuck Wright said he believes Bailey was killed during a robbery. Wright said he thinks Bailey was killed near where the remains were found. A man and his daughter found theAntwan Devagio Bailey remains near the corner of Highway 56 and Stewart Road on Sunday.

Investigators said Bailey had cash with him because he was going to look at a car he planned to buy.

Wright said, “It’s a terrible thing for an 18-year-old, or a person of any age really, to die because of a robbery. It was a little over a thousand bucks — certainly not worth a life.”

The incident report said that Shippy was the last person known to have seen Bailey alive. The report said that Shippy gave conflicting stories to investigators, and he eventually admitted robbing and assaulting Bailey.

The report also said that Shippy’s phone activity placed him in the area where Bailey’s body was found.

Wright said, “Another 18-year-old child killed for nothing.” He also asked for prayers for Bailey’s family.

Identity Theft Tax Fraud Victim in Joplin, MO

Two Joplin residents say they are victims of identity theft. Now they are trying to clean up what is being called a “legal mess”.

It’s happened during tax filing season when identity theft is more common. But police say criminals seem to be willing to “do more” than before.

“It makes me feel violated,” says the real Barbara Lambert-Reppy.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

She learned she was the victim of identity theft when she tried to electronically file this year’s tax return.

“When it wouldn’t go electronically I contacted the IRS to find out what the deal was,” Lampert-Reppy says.

The IRS expected her to also submit adjusted gross income, as the Barbara Lambert-Reppy who lives in Jesup, Georgia did in 2011.

There’s just one big problem. The Lambert-Reppy in Georgia and the Lambert-Reppy in Joplin both are on IRS record as having the same social security number.

“I have no idea where Jesup, Georgia is.”

This Lambert-Reppy says she didn’t even file taxes in 2011 because back then she only received disability income.

“I’ve taken, personally, in the last week, two reports for this of people going to file their income taxes and someone has already filed it under their social security number,” says Cpl. Chuck Niess of the Joplin Police Department.

“It’s not that we get a lot, but we do see it, and we do see a few more each year,” says Barbara Bradhurst of Erickson’s Liberty Tax Service.

IRS records show the fake Lambert-Reppy in Georgia got a return of more than $6,000.

If only that was legit.

“My vehicle would be fixed instead of sitting back there broke down,” says Lambert-Reppy.

“Post Office Box, or someone else’s address, I mean, they’re pretty adept at playing the game a lot of times,” says Cpl. Niess.

TThere’s the usual, but important reminder of common safeguards.

“You should not be carrying your Social Security card in your wallet or your purse,” says Bradhurst.

But police have a warning. Sometimes, no matter what you do identity theft happens.

“Criminals are able to buy this information,” says Cpl. Niess.

So the real Lambert-Reppy with the Social Security number intended for only her waits with a 90 day watch on her credit and hopes nothing more happens.

Tax preparers say if you suspect identity theft, the IRS will probably tell you to file reports with local police and with the Federal Trade Commission.

Fraud Investigation Joplin, MO Woman Sentenced

Tammy Dickinson, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced today that a Joplin, Mo., woman has been sentenced in federal court for fraudulently receiving federal disaster benefits following the May 22, 2011 tornado.

Amber Nicole Peters, 22, of Joplin, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 to 14 months in federal prison without parole, followed by five years of supervised release. The court also ordered Peters to pay $3,596 in restitution.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Peters pleaded guilty on Oct. 23, 2012, to disaster fraud. Peters admitted that she applied for federal disaster benefits by falsely claiming that her home and property had been damaged or destroyed in the May 22, 2011 tornado. In reality, Peters met a FEMA inspector at the tornado-damaged home belonging to her recently-deceased grandmother, which she falsely claimed was her primary residence. FEMA authorized payment in the amount of $3,596, of which $2,658 was for loss of personal property and $938 was for rental assistance. Peters was paid by electronic funds transfer on June 7, 2011.

As a result of Peters’s false claim, FEMA initially denied the legitimate claim later filed by her aunt, who lived at the home with Peters’s grandmother.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven M. Mohlhenrich. It was investigated by the Department of Homeland Security – Office of Inspector General, the FBI and the Joplin, Mo., Police Department.

Pedophile Tracking Lakeport, CA Man Arrested

City police arrested a Clearlake man on charges of child sex abuse after a nearly yearlong investigation Thursday.

Daniel Brazil Sr., 64, was taken into custody by Clearlake Police detectives on a felony arrest warrant charging him with three counts of committing lewd and lascivious acts on a child and two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, Sgt. Nick Bennett stated.

Investigators were first notified last June about allegations of sexual assault involving Brazil several years before, Bennett stated. “The victims were young children at the time of the assaults,” he added.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Clearlake Police Det. Ryan Peterson spent months contacting and interviewing people involved in the case, including the victims, relatives, witnesses and out-of-state law enforcement officials, before being able to present a case to the Lake County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution, Bennett stated.

Brazil is currently being held on $550,000 bail.

The investigation into Brazil covered several decades, and detectives believe there may be other victims who are reluctant to come forward, Bennett stated. Anyone with information about the case can contact Peterson at 994-8251, ext. 320.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed charges earlier this week against a Pasadena woman accused of using an Altadena resident’s credit cards to get cash and to shop at stores in Pasadena, Duarte and Los Angeles.

Deputies didn’t disclose the specific amount of the cash advances but alleged the woman obtained thousands.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

On Tuesday, a prosecutor filed 14 felony counts against Jaime.

Deputies said the investigation started Jan. 31 when an Altadena resident noticed several unauthorized, high-dollar transactions on her credit card. The investigation led to the suspect.

Authorities alleged Jaime gained access to the victim’s credit accounts and fraudulently obtained cash advances and made several purchases.

Detectives served a search warrant March 11 at a Pasadena location, They also searched two other locations in the city on April 4 and arrested Jaime.

She’s being held without bail at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood. Her next court date is April 26 at Alhambra Superior Court

Wrongful Death Missing Ohio Woman’s Remains Found

Authorities turned their focus Thursday to determining how a 21-year-old southwest Ohio woman died, following discovery of her skeletal remains in Indiana 20 months after she went missing.

“It’s basically like a brand new investigation,” said Indiana State Police Sgt. Noel Houze.

Indiana police investigators took “numerous items” from the site where Katelyn Markham’s remains were found for study and possible testing, Houze said. He said the creek area where the remains were found is used by some as a dumping ground, so it’s too soon to say whether any of the items are significant to the investigation.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

“They collected a lot of stuff,” he said, declining to describe the items but adding that they could turn out to be trash.

Indiana police and Fairfield, Ohio, police have a joint investigation in the case and suspect foul play. Markham was reported missing Aug. 14, 2011, from her home in suburban Cincinnati just days before her 22nd birthday. Her remains were found Sunday, some 25 miles west of her Fairfield home, and identified Wednesday with the aid of dental records.

“The biggest two questions are how did she die and where did she die?” Houze said.

He said investigators would go back and interview people who had been questioned earlier in the missing person case, “to see if they can pick up something new.” He said police are urging anyone with information about the case to call.

He said authorities will decide what possible evidence should be sent to labs and what testing could be done on the skeletal remains to yield evidence.

The Hamilton County coroner’s office in Cincinnati identified Markham’s remains, but referred questions about the investigation to Indiana authorities.

A Brookville, Ind., man told The Cincinnati Enquirer that he and his wife found the remains early Sunday while looking for scrap metal along the Big Cedar Creek near Cedar Grove. Andy Hicks, 35, said he and wife Natalie found a jawbone near a tree, then a skull in a brown grocery bag, and other remains some 30 yards from the water.

Fairfield Police Chief Michael Dickey, whose investigators have pursued numerous leads in the case, declined to discuss their next steps.

“We were all concerned that she would never been found, and this will allow us to proceed with the next phase of the investigation,” Dickey said. “I’m sure the family is devastated, but it does answer the question.”

Her father, David Markham, was stunned by the discovery.

“I’m doing as well as can be, and I appreciate the love and support,” Markham told WLWT-TV of Cincinnati. “I just need time right now with my other daughter Ally.”

Her fiance, John Carter, wasn’t available for comment Thursday, but his stepfather said the news had hit Carter hard.

“Pretty much crushing at this point,” said Steve Winkler. “Everything is fresh again, just waves of emotion. He’s doing the best he can.”

The case had brought out hundreds of volunteers to help police and professional search teams scour nearby woods, waterways and rural areas, and was featured on national television shows. The only item gone with her was her cellphone, which apparently was turned off shortly after she went missing. Her dog was locked in a bedroom, and her car and purse were left behind in her town house just off a busy street in Fairfield.

“I never expected this day to come. It’s all so surreal,” said neighbor Donna Messano Metz, who had searched for her repeatedly. “It’s awful.”

She said she had searched as recently as a month ago, and that an earlier search had taken volunteers to within a few miles of where the remains were found.

The case had stunned a community of 43,000 residents where violent crime is rare. There were vigils, fundraising events for search costs and billboards, and fliers with her image were in businesses around southwest Ohio, and there were national TV reports on the case.

Numerous tributes and condolences were posted, after news of the remains circulated, on a Facebook page called “Missing! Bring Katelyn Markham Home.”

She was last seen by her fiance late Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011. He said she then sent him a text message not long after he left her home. Carter called police that Sunday evening. He said that she hadn’t responded to text messages, and that he became alarmed when he went to her home to find her car and nearly all her belongings still there.

She was only weeks away from earning her bachelor’s degree from an art college. She and Carter had known each other for years and had said they planned to move to Colorado and get married later.

Carter and her father said repeatedly that that it would be out of character for her to leave town without contacting anyone. She worked two jobs besides doing art work, and police concluded that she was a hard-working, wholesome young woman who appeared to have been a victim of foul play. However, they had said they didn’t have any evidence to prove that a crime had been committed

Insurance Fraud Tolland County, CT Man Charged

A man has been charged with filing a fraudulent insurance claim that said he broke his clavical outside an Orange business at a time when he was being held at a prison in Somers.

The man, Gerald Moyher, 54, was charged Friday with insurance fraud.

He is being held at MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution in Somers on $400 cash bond, and he is due back in Vernon Superior Court on Tuesday.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

According to an affidavit supporting Moyher’s arrest, Traveler’s Property Insurance called Tolland County State’s Attorney’s Office in April 2011 claiming Moyher field a fraudulent insurance claim.

The affidavit, completed by an inspector with the state’s attorney’s office, also gives the following description of events:

The insurance company received a letter signed by someone claiming to be a lawyer representing Moyher, saying he slipped and fell on a commercial property in Orange on May 30, 2010.

Travelers also received a statement from Moyher, which was notarized, stating he stepped on a bag that covered a pool of oil, causing him to fall and break his clavicle.

But when Travelers contacted Moyher, he said he refused to comment and said he did not want to pursue his claim.

The investigator said Correction Department records indicate Moyher was incarcerated at Osborn Correctional Institution in Somers from May 29, 2010, to Nov. 18, 2010.

The affidavit does not sat why Moyher was being held, and online court records do not list any convictions after 2004 or pending cases besides his arrest Friday.

The investigator also found no licensed or practicing lawyers in Connecticut under the name Moyher used in the letter.

Wrongful Death Body Found in Burned Car in Orlando, FL

A body was found after a fire was put out at a home in Orange County early Thursday morning, and the discovery has launched a homicide investigation, according to officials

Firefighters said flames were shooting from the roof of a Radiant Circle home when they arrived to fight them about 4:45 a.m.

The blaze engulfed and destroyed the home, which has been vacant for more than a year and was in foreclosure.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Firefighters discovered the body in a small sports car parked in the garage’s home after knocking down the blaze.

Neighbors were alerted to the fire when they heard popping noises, which authorities think were the car tires popping under the intense heat.

The body is too badly burned to be identified, and deputies still aren’t sure of the gender.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Fire marshals will look into what started it.
