Wrongful Death Elderly Man Appears in Court Over Road Rage Death

An an elderly Rockcastle County man accused of killing his sister in a road rage case was in court again Wednesday as his lawyer once again raised the question of his competency to stand trial.

Clyde White, 78, faces murder and attempted murder charges after running his two elderly siblings off the road in Rockcastle County back in August 2011. White’s sister, Dorothy Whitaker, was taken to UK Hospital and later died from her injuries.

On Wednesday, White’s lawyer claimed that though White was found competent to stand trial back in September, he should be tested again.

The judge in the case questioned if the request was just a ploy to delay the trial. However, in the end the judge granted a continuance, and set the trial date for January 14 unless White’s competency becomes an issue.

Police say White was behind the wheel of a van racing along I-75 at speeds over 100 mph, chasing his brother Lawrence White, 82, and his sister, Dorothy Whitaker, 83. The vehicles exited onto KY-461 and just before the intersection of HWY-150 in Rockcastle County, Clyde White crashed into his siblings’ van.

Clyde White left the scene, crashed into another vehicle and then returned to the scene. Police arrested him and charged him with two counts of attempted murder and wanton endangerment. When he was arrested, White never explained to officers what happened.
