Private Detective 2 Former Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputies and Stolen Guns

Wednesday was sentencing day for two former Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies accused of stealing guns that were supposed to be booked into evidence.

Merle McDaniel and Bill Beers once wore Fayette County deputy sheriff uniforms in the same courthouse, but Wednesday both were out of uniform for good. Each were sentenced for stealing guns confiscated by the office.

McDaniel receiving the harshest punishment. He must serve four months in jail, then the last eight months of his one-year sentence on home incarceration. The special judge brought in to preside over the case said McDaniel made excuses instead of accepting responsibility. Police say he pawned two of the stolen guns, one of which was never recovered.

Beers was given 60 days home incarceration and put on two years probation. His attorney says he faulted by not booking weapons into evidence in the time frame required.

Both former sergeants resigned earlier this year after 14 guns confiscated by them were unaccounted for.
