Department of Insurance investigators allege that, on Aug. 25, 2007, Cooperman submitted a false claim to Travelers Claims Hartford Auto for the loss of a $50,000 engagement ring stolen during a burglary of his Durham residence.
Cooperman settled with his insurance company for $49,200.
Investigators said Cooperman’s ex-fiancé, who still had the engagement ring, reported the malfeasance.
Cooperman was arrested Jan. 2 and is being held by the New York Police Department while he awaits extradition back to North Carolina to stand trial.
