Accident Reconstruction Lexington Woman Killed In Crash

A Lexington woman was killed Thursday afternoon in a crash along the Mountain Parkway while on her way home from a family funeral in eastern Kentucky.

Mary Elrod, 62, of Lexington wrecked around 4 p.m. near mile marker 35 in Powell County close to the Wolfe County line. State Police said the car was traveling west when it veered off the road into a median, striking an emergency turn-around, causing the vehicle to flip.

“It’s a shock to everybody. Everybody is absolutely in shock over this,” Elrod’s friend and minister, Soni Cantrell-Smith told LEX 18 over the phone Thursday evening.

Cantrell-Smith, the reverend at Lexington’s Ahava Center For Spiritual Living said the 62-year-old served on the center’s Core Council, or Board Of Directors and that she had been a member for years. Ahava is Hebrew for “love,” something Cantrell-Smith said Elrod was all about, dedicating her life to helping others.

“When anyone was in need, she never asked how much money you made or what kind of person you were, or where you lived. She was there to help, always,” Cantrell-Smith said.

Elrod had retired from Lexington’s VA Hospital and went back to work part-time at the Lexington Clinic as a respiratory therapist. That was a testament, her friends said, to how much she cared for people.

“It’s a huge loss. It’s a hole in our community that will never be filled,” said Cantrell-Smith.

Milward Funeral Home in Lexington will handle Elrod’s arrangements.
