Identity Theft Authorities Warn of Scam in Mississippi

Authorities say a man is impersonating a Hinds County sheriff’s deputy to steal people’s identities.

U.S. Attorney Gregory K. Davis and Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis sent a news release Friday warning the public about the scam.

The news release says the suspect claims to be a deputy who has an arrest warrant for someone in the home he calls. He threatens people with arrest if they don’t provide their social security and driver’s license numbers over the telephone.

Several metro area residents have reported receiving the calls.

Authorities advise the public not give out personal identification information over the telephone to someone they don’t know — even if that person claims to be a police officer.
