Identity Theft California Man Pleads Guilty

A California man pleaded guilty Friday in federal court to identity theft charges in connection with a failed attempt to take $25,000 from another man’s bank account.

Chad Auston Cohen, of Lancaster, Calif., pleaded to one count of aggravated identity theft in exchange for dropping four other charges from the federal grand jury indictment earlier this year.

Cohen faces up to two years in prison and a $250,000 fine. U.S, District Judge Sam R. Cummings, who accepted Cohen’s plea, did not immediately set a sentencing date.

Lubbock police arrested Cohen in April at the Wells Fargo Bank office at United Supermarkets’ 50th Street and Avenue Q location for allegedly trying to withdraw $25,000 from a bank account in the name of Erick M. Lee.

Cohen, who Lubbock police said did the same thing the day before in Amarillo, showed the teller a Social Security card and California driver’s license in Lee’s name. Both identity cards were fake, according to court records.
