A 64-year-old Cohasset woman reported to police on Tuesday (Sept. 10) that she had been a victim of identity theft. The woman reported that she had received a notice from the IRS that she was due a refund of $6,380. However, the check never arrived. When she called the IRS to inquire, she was told the check had been cashed.

Complicating matters further, the woman had assumed the refund was for 2011 because at the time she received the notification letter, she had not yet filed her 2012 taxes. The IRS confirmed the check was for 2012, police said. Detectives are working with the IRS on the investigation.
