Wrongful Death Suspects in Alex Johnson Murder Indicted

A Fayette County grand jury has indicted two suspects in the murder of a Lexington man who went missing late last year.

Court documents indicate that Robert Markham “Mark” Taylor, 28, knocked on Alex Johnson’s door back on Dec. 20. The 38-year-old victim was talking to his girlfriend on the phone at the time. She told police she recognized Taylor’s voice, and he said, “Come downstairs. I’ve got a surprise for you.” Johnson’s girlfriend said he told her, “Mark is here. I’ll call you later.” That was the last she heard from him.

Johnson’s body was recovered from the Kentucky River stuffed in a barrel on Jan. 24.

According to court documents, Timothy “Tiny” Ballard, 42, told police he and Taylor lured Johnson into a car, and Taylor beat him to death. Police say Ballard admitted to disposing of the body while Taylor cleaned up the car.

The grand jury indicted Taylor on charges of murder, kidnapping and tampering with physical evidence. Ballard was indicted on charges of kidnapping, tampering with physical evidence and persistent felony offender.

According to the indictment, Ballard has previous convictions of kidnapping, robbery, threatening a U.S. president and theft by unlawful taking in Alabama.
