Missing Person Body Found in Patterson, NY Likely Man Reported Missing 4 Years Ago

State police said they believe the body found in a wooded area along Maple Avenue in the Town of Patterson Saturday morning is that of a Patterson man who was reported missing four years ago.

On Saturday morning, at around 9:15, local residents who were clearing a wooded area off of Maple Avenue discovered what appeared to be human remains. They contacted the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, which subsequently determined the remains may be related a 2010 missing persons case being investigated by the New York State Police.

A search of the area by state police K9 units, forensic personnel, and other law enforcement members led to the discovery of a bicycle and identification associated with Gabriel Lopez-Duarte. Investigator said that positive identification is pending DNA analysis.

State police in Brewster said that in October 2010 they received a report from a family member that Lopez-Duarte, 39, had left his Patterson residence on a bicycle and had not been seen since. A police investigation followed that covered multiple jurisdictions and many leads; however, the whereabouts of Lopez-Duarte remained unknown and the case remained active.

The Charley Project, a website that profiles over 9,000 cold case missing person files from across the United States, said Lopez-Durate lived with his brother in the 10 block of Locust Street in Patterson and was last seen on Sept. 29, 2010. It says he left home on a gray 10-speed racing bike without telling anyone where he was going. Lopez-Durate was reportedly acting strangely prior to his disappearance, according to The Charley Project. The website said he had been previously treated for neurocysticercosis, a potential deadly parasitical infection of the brain.

The cause of death of the body found on Maple Avenue is still under investigation.

Police ask that anyone with information regarding the investigation contact the State Police Brewster Bureau of Criminal Investigation at 845-279-8656.
