Wrongful Death Mother and Daughter Murdered in Bardstown

There are no suspects and no answers in the murder of a Nelson County mother and daughter. Fear is running rampant in Bardstown, however the focus for many people is the victims.

There’s no doubt Kathy and Samantha Netherland were loved. Therefore it’s heartbreaking for the community to comprehend this crime.

“It’s a terrible, terrible tragedy,” said Donna Heywood, a friend of Kathy. “Just shock, you know. didn’t know what to think,” said the family’s neighbor, Robert Crow.

On Tuesday the 48 year-old mother and 16 year-old daughter were found dead by a relative, in their home on Springfield Road. Police said there were obvious signs of trauma and the two were murdered.

“This is something that you couldn’t even imagine in your wildest imaginations. Nightmares that something like this would ever happen,” said one of Kathy’s best friend.

It’s especially troubling news for friends and family. However, it’s something all Bardstown students and staff have to cope with.

Samantha was a sophomore at Bardstown High School and Kathy was an elementary special education teacher. She was beloved by her students. “It took a very big, large toll on me when I first heard the news,” said Ian Heywood. He was one of Kathy’s former students.

In this dark hour though, kids like Ian remind us all to remember the mother and daughter for the lives they lived. “She complimented me and she took care of me at school and she was very nice and very patient. I love her,” said Ian.

“She was a wonderful student, very energetic, very conscientious, very academic,” said Bardstown High School Principal, Chris Pickett. He said Samantha was an active and involved student who enjoyed the choir.

While there are still more questions than answers about how this mother and daughter died, one thing is clear. “Samantha and Kathy Netherland will be sorely missed. They were wonderful people, they were very kind and considerate of others and we are going to miss them a lot,” said Bardstown School Superintendent, Brent Holsclaw.

Kathy Netherland’s husband recently died from cancer. The two of them had a second daughter who was away at school during this crime.
