Fraud Investigation Treasurer of Nonprofit Indicted

A Woodford County woman has been indicted on the very charges she was convicted of three years ago.

A nonprofit organization known as “Home At Last” gives neglected pets a second chance at life, but in recent years it has struggled to keep its door open.

In fact the volunteers said they’ve put their own paychecks in to help out, but according ot deputies in Anderson County, one volunteer was pocketing that money by the thousands.

Melanie Aitken was indicted for embezzling $69,000 over the last three years as Treasurer for the organization.

Neighbors said Aitken loved animals and this comes as a surprise.

Even more alarming, according to court documents this isn’t the first time Aitken has faced these charges.

Aitken was found guilty in 2011 of stealing thousands from her previous employer, “Two Chicks.”

Deputies said they opened an investigation into the latest case back in September 2013.

“Because of so many transactions and a lot of them were masked to the point where it was hard to trace back what the money was spent on, but the search warrants and subpoenas have actually shed a whole lot of light on that,” Anderson County Sheriff’s Department Detective Sergeant Bryan Taylor said.
