Fraud Investigation Scam Alert Man Says Mom Died and Asking For Money

People across Central Kentucky said they’re outraged after they said a scammer is making his way through local hospitals and businesses targeting some of the most vulnerable people for money.

The man in the photo has been showing up at hospitals and preying on grieving families asking them for cash.

The photo showing the man was taken at Mount Sterling’s Hospital last week.

The man allegedly walked into the waiting room, tears down his face, saying his mother just died and he didn’t have any money.

But how did the woman who took the picture know it wasn’t true?

According to her husband, he said it’s because they saw the same man with the same story at St. Joseph’s East in Lexington two weeks earlier and gave him money.

Jay Garrett gave him money at St. Joseph’s but then he saw the man again a week later and then a third time at a different hospital.

“This past Monday, my wife went to the hospital in Mt. Sterling to have blood work done and when she was sitting there, guy walks in and starts telling the same story.”

The couple asked the hospital about it.

“They said we can tell you that no one h as died on his floor and no one has died of a heart attack,” Garrett said. “This is the second time that guy’s been here, if he comes back, please let us know so we can call security.”

Angela Abshear was at Good Samaritan Hospital when she ran into the man, apparently going through a tough time.

“He seemed like he was in real distress. He told us that he was talking on his cell phone and said that his mother had passed away,” Angela Abshear said. “We gave him money because he was saying he didn’t have any money to go home on or anything. We did feel sorry for him because it did seem like he was genuine.”

But some at the hospital visitors said he’s not. A few days later, he was back.

No one knows his name or where he is from but UK Police said he’s also been spotted UK Hospital and they are investigating.

“That’s horrible that someone would do that because I really thought the man needed help,” Abshear said.

Many others have called our newsroom or posted online that they have had run-ins with this man at other places.

The list includes Berea’s hospital, Clark County’s hospital and Walmarts in Nicholasville and Winchester.

We also heard from someone at Rockcastle Regional Hospital who said they’re familiar with him and they are working with other hospitals to keep him away from visitors.
