Wrongful Death Madison Co. Family Still Waiting For Answers in June Murders

A Madison County family is searching for answers months after a family member and her boyfriend were murdered in their home in June.

Karen Simpson and her boyfriend, Avery Evans, were found dead at their home on Valley Avenue in Richmond. Police say that the two were murdered, but there are currently no suspects.

“Well, our family is very frustrated I mean, we’re scared. We don’t know who did it, why they did it, how they did it. So, we don’t even know if the community is in danger or not,” says Karen’s sister Kelly Sproles.

“It’s going to take 6-9 months for the DNA testing to come back and that’s held up the police because they need that DNA to see if they can’t find out who killed her,” says Sproles.

DNA evidence is now in the hands of the state’s Central Lab. It could take 9 months before evidence is returned to detectives. Due to recent shortage, the lab is backlogged on cases.

“It’s a little bit longer than other agencies, but it’s not the worst we’ve had before, but again we lost so many people at the same time,” says Laura Sudkamp, the manager of the lab.

Sudkamp says her department is working as fast as possible. Kelly is hoping results lead to an arrest.

“I think it will be a closure, it will make us feel safer because we got someone off the street that needs to be off the street,” she says.
