Cold Case Friends and Family Seek Closure in A 5 Year old Murder

It’s been more than five years since an elderly bar owner was killed in his Lexington home. Now, because of a different cold case arrest in Jessamine County, friends of Charlie Sowers said they’re motivated to find answers in his murder.

“We want justice for Charlie,” said Arlene Cooper. She was a friend of 71-year-old Charlie Sowers, before he was viciously killed in his home in 2009. For her, justice is a wish worth waiting for. However, as time increases, so does the pain.

“Anger, hurt why? Why would anybody do this?” asked Cooper. It’s a question friends and family have continued to ask year after year. Back in 2009, Sowers was found unconscious in his home on Augusta Drive.

“He was murdered in his house,” said Cooper. Investigators said Sowers died of blunt force trauma, then a week later his bar was burglarized. Still, the secret of who took his life lingers.

“When you don’t know why and who did something, it’s going to haunt you,” said Cooper. She knows this hard truth too well. Cooper said Sowers is her second friend she’s lost, at the hand of someone else.

“Another friend that was murdered, Mark Dunn, they finally found his killers and we are getting justice for him. So, now I want justice for Charlie too,” said Cooper. Two weeks ago two men were arrested in that 2008 cold case. Friends said it’s a sign of hope in this case.

“It shows me that if you keep on putting it out there, somebody may speak up one day,”said Cooper.

Sower’s daughter told LEX 18 News that the answers are out there. Like this case, she said her father will never be forgotten, however friends and family want closure.

“I believe it will give some peace. You know, it won’t bring him back, but there will be some peace,” said Cooper.

If you have any information in this case, you’re asked to call Lexington Police.
