Identity Theft Kearney, NE Woman Charged

A Kearney woman is accused of stealing the identity of another a woman, opening up credit card accounts and racking up over $3,100 in debt.

Janelle McAtee, 26, was arrested on a Buffalo County warrant alleging felony identity theft, felony unauthorized use of a financial transaction device over $1,500 and felony attempted unauthorized use of a financial transaction deceive over $1,500. The alleged incidents took place between July 25 and Aug. 3.

The charges accuse McAtee of using a woman’s personal identity information to open up and use credit cards in her name, then use those credit cards to make purchases totaling $3,196.

Court records detailing the incident have been sealed. However, Kearney Police Department incident reports indicate purchases were made in the alleged victim’s name for shoes, dog food and power tools.

McAtee posted 10 percent of a $30,000 bond, or $3,000, and is free. She is scheduled to appear in court in September.
