Pedophile Tracking Former Birmingham Police Officer Facing Charges

A former Birmingham police officer who faces child sex abuse and rape charges in Alabaster now faces an additional charge in south Alabama.

Joshua Herbinger, 30, is charged with sex abuse of a child less than 12 in Baldwin County, court records show. The former Birmingham Police Department evidence technician was indicted on the new charge in August and jailed last week.

Court records filed by an Orange Beach police investigator say the abuse happened more than a year ago while Herbinger was on vacation there. The records indicate the victim was the same victim in the Alabaster case.

Herbinger was released from the Baldwin County Jail Friday after posting $50,000 bond. He was allowed to return to his grandmother’s home in Pleasant Grove with conditions to stay away from his victim and to stay off the computers.

He was first arrested Oct. 9,, 2014 and charged with four counts of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old after a young female reported the abuse to the School Resource Officer at her school. Alabaster police said Herbinger is not related to the victim.

He was arrested again by Alabaster police andcharged in the rape of an adult woman. He was charged with first-degree rape, and police said he wasn’t in any kind of relationship with the victim.

In late October 2014, he was fired from the Birmingham Police Department after serving nine years on the force.
