Private Detective: Burglars Hit Two Counties

On Monday LEX 18 warned about a brazen break-in at a Madison County business. Investigators in Grant County saw our story, and said they think the thieves also hit their community, using the same get away pickup truck.

Two crimes, two auto dealerships, and two people caught on camera in two different counties.

“Pieced together that it was going to be the same set of suspects,” said Chief Deputy Brian Maines, with the Grant County Sheriff’s Department. Detectives in Grant County said the brazen burglars first stopped at the Piles Chevrolet Sunday at around 9 p.m.

“It looked to me like they had a shopping list,” said Michael Buckwalter, a dealer at Piles Chevrolet.

He said the man and woman were stealing new pickup truck tailgates. “They certainly appear to be comfortable, no one appears to be in a panic or frantic,” said Buckwalter.

“Drop the tailgate, remove the hinges, and then was able to quickly remove the tailgates and put them in the bed of their truck,” said Maines, while describing the surveillance video.

What investigators said they noticed most, was the get away truck. A white pickup, with a flickering taillight, that was very similar to one seen hours later in Madison County.

“The truck matched the description of the truck that ran through the gate down there,” said Maines.

Detectives said they noticed the similarities while watching our story about Central Kentucky Truck and Trailer on LEX18 News.

“It’s very brazen. I mean you take a truck and smash into a gate…we have another camera that captures them leaving… you can tell this is a Dodge truck,” said Tim Cobb with Central Kentucky Truck and Trailer.

The brazen burglars broke into that dealership early Monday morning at around midnight. Cobb said the duo hot wired, and then stole a $20-thousand truck.

Now the Grant County dealership is making a deal and offering a thousand dollar reward for any information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case. If you have any information about these crimes, you’re asked to call the police in Madison County, or the Grant County Sheriff’s Department.

“Someone knows this vehicle and knows these people,” said Buckwalter.
