Private Detective: Woman Accused of Using Her Child To Help Her Shoplift

One woman has been charged with theft and unlawful transaction with a minor after police say she used her child to shoplift almost $700 worth of merchandise from a Berea Wal-Mart.

Police say Peggy Elam entered Wal-Mart and grabbed bags from the front of the store. She is alleged to have put a number of items from the store in a gray plastic tote and other items in the bags.

“Then they put the tote in the buggy and she instructed her child to go to one of the self check outs and pay for two items, some soda I think, so they paid for those two items and pushed the cart out with everything in it and did not pay for the items in the tote,” Sgt. Jake Reed with the Berea Police Department told LEX 18’s Richard Essex.

Elam was arrested. Sgt. Reed said that at first she denied taking the items but eventually admitted that she took the items and asked her child to participate.

Wal-Mart did not pursue charges against Elam’s teenage child.
