Private Detective: KY Ag. Commissioner Goes After Credit Card Skimmers

The state of Kentucky is going after those committing fraud at the gas pump as one of the year’s busiest travel weekend approaches.

Today, Kentucky’s Commissioner of Agriculture announced that officials will be cracking down on skimmers at the gas pumps around the state of Kentucky.

Thousands of drivers from out of state will pump gas during the July 4th weekend. To prevent any kind of personal information being stolen, KDA inspectors will have the task of inspecting fuel pumps at every gas station across the state.

They are specially trained to notice any pumps that have broken security tape or any inconsistencies in their working functions.

“If we do find a skimmer or a pattern of skimmers, that is immediately turned over to a local law enforcement agency and we let them do their job. We’re just another arrow in the quiver in trying to protect against consumer fraud, which accounts for over three billion dollars in losses due to gas pump skimmers alone in the United States,” Commissioner Ryan Quarles told LEX 18.

Recently, a Lexington gas station was targeted. Lexington Police arrested two juveniles they believe are responsible.

They’re warning consumers to pay attention to small details at the pump such as broken seals or doors that may have been pried open.If you see anything suspicious, contact the Kentucky Department of Agriculture at 502-572-0282.
