Private Detective: Laurel Co. Man Fed Meth to His Dogs

A Laurel County man is in jail after officials say he fed methamphetamine to his dogs.

According to an arrest citation, Benjamin Burdette was arrested after a dog was seized from his residence Tuesday afternoon. A caller told dispatch that the dog appeared to be having a seizure in the front yard. Animal control took the dog to Cumberland Valley Animal Hospital where the canine had to be euthanized.

A toxicology report showed the dog tested positive for amphetamines.

Upon further research, deputies learned that another dog had been taken from the residence the night before and also tested positive for the drug.

When confronted, Burdette admitted to feeding the dogs meth. A 2-year-old child was also removed from the home by social services. She will be tested for amphetamines as well.

Burdette was charged with two counts of cruelty to animals and first-degree wanton endangerment.  He also had existing warrants for failure to comply with sex offender registration and persistent felony offender warrants.

Burdette was arraigned Wednesday morning. His bond was set at $10,000 and if he gets out, he has to be under house arrest. He is not allowed contact with the child without supervision.

His preliminary hearing is set for August 30th at 11 a.m.
